The effect of individualised post-exercise blood flow restriction on recovery following strenuous resistance exercise: A randomised controlled trial.

The purpose was to clarify the effect of individualised post-exercise blood flow restriction (PE-BFR) on measures of recovery following strenuous resistance exercise. Twenty resistance-trained adults were randomised to a PE-BFR or control (CON) group and completed a fatigue protocol of five sets of 10 repetitions of maximal intensity concentric and eccentric seated knee extension exercise. Participants then lied supine with cuffs applied to the upper thigh and intermittently inflated to 80% limb occlusion pressure (PE-BFR) or 20 mmHg (CON) for 30 min (3 × 5 min per leg). Peak torque (PT), time

Exercise facilitates post-stroke recovery through mitigation of neuronal hyperexcitability via interleukin-10 signaling.

Physical exercise is an effective therapy for improving stroke recovery. However, the exact underlying molecular mechanisms of exercise-enhanced neuronal repair remain unclear. As exercise affects the immune system in healthy individuals, and the immune system in turn influences recovery after stroke, we hypothesized that immune mechanisms play a role in exercise-induced neurological recovery. Using a model of ischemic stroke in adult male mice, we here show that the presence of regulatory T cells (Treg) within the ischemic brain is a prerequisite for exercise-enhanced functional and structura

Post-Exercise Controlled Breathing Enhances Cardiovascular Recovery and Autonomic Balance: A Randomised Crossover Study.

Background and Objectives: Controlled breathing can influence autonomic regulation and haemodynamics; however, the role of its timing relative to exercise remains unclear. Materials and Methods: Fourteen healthy, physically active men (mean age 21.8 ± 0.7 years; body mass index within the normal range) participated in this randomised crossover study. Each session consisted of five 5 min cycling bouts at 50% of heart-rate reserve, interspersed with 3 min passive recovery periods. The three conditions were: control (no structured breathing), 30 s hyperventilation (approximately 30 breaths·min-1)

Can Post-Exercise Hemodynamic Response Be Influenced by Different Recovery Methods in Paraplegic Sportsmen?

Post-exercise hypotension is of great clinical relevance and also in sports training settings, as recovery speed is important. The aim of this study was to compare the influence of different recovery methods on post-exercise hemodynamic response. Twelve male paraplegic sportsmen (25.40 ± 3.30 years) performed a strength training (ST) session using the bench press exercise. After the ST, three recovery methods were randomly performed over a 15-min period: passive recovery (PR), cold-water (CW) and dry needle (DN). Blood pressure (BP), heart rate (HR) and myocardial oxygen were measured before a

Time-course recovery of cerebral blood velocity metrics post aerobic exercise: a systematic review.

Currently, the standard approach for restricting exercise prior to cerebrovascular data collection varies widely between 6 and 24 h. This universally employed practice is a conservative approach to safeguard physiological alterations that could potentially confound one's study design. Therefore, the purpose of this systematic review was to amalgamate the existing literature examining the extent and duration of postexercise alterations in cerebrovascular function, measured via transcranial Doppler ultrasound. Furthermore, an exploratory aim was to scrutinize and discuss common biases/limitation

Aberrant autonomic pattern during the post-exercise recovery phase in long QT syndrome patients.

OBJECTIVES: It is well-established that the autonomic nervous system (ANS) plays a central role in arrhythmogenesis. During and after exercise the ANS is particularly active, and since long QT syndrome (LQTS) patients have an increased risk of lethal arrhythmias during physical activity, it is important to investigate the autonomic function in these patients. In this study we investigate the ANS response during and after exercise in LQTS patients and healthy age and sex matched controls. METHODS: Forty-four genotype-verified adult LQTS patients and forty-four healthy age- and sex-matched cont

Effects of Japanese Diet on Post-Exercise Glycogen Recovery in Mice Skeletal Muscle and Liver.

The diet consumed by most Japanese people, which contains high amounts of carbohydrate and low levels of fat compared with the Western-style diet (WD), has been considered an effective diet for promoting glycogen recovery after exercise. However, there is no direct evidence to support this general belief, because no studies have examined the effect of whole, actually cooked Japanese-style diet (JD) on post-exercise glycogen replenishment. In this study, we comparatively examined the effects of a cooked typical JD and WD on glycogen accumulation in mouse skeletal muscle and liver after acute ex

The effect of mild post-stroke exercise on reactive neurogenesis and recovery of somatosensation in aged rats.

Exercise impacts the cellular response and behavioral recovery following stroke, but has not been widely investigated in aged animals. We tested the hypothesis that gentle post-stroke exercise could enhance recovery of somatosensory function and influence survival and phenotype of newly generated cells in the peri-infarct region after focal cortical ischemia in aged rats. Focal stroke was induced in the forelimb area of the sensorimotor cortex in 18-month old male rats using the vasoconstrictor endothelin-1. Beginning 1 week after stroke or sham surgery, half of the animals walked 100-300 m da

No differential effects among cooling strategies on post-exercise core temperature recovery in male athletes.

Personal cooling strategies are used to lower body core temperature. This controlled cross-over trial evaluates the efficacy of cooling strategies following exercise-induced heat exposure resulting in increased body temperature. Ten healthy active males (25 ± 3 years, 84.5 kg with interquartile range 81.4-89.4) were randomized to a mixed cooling protocol every week within a five-week period. After completing a 60-minute intervention to increase body core temperature, they participated in one of four cooling interventions in thermoneutral (~24°C, ~45% relative humidity) conditions: (1) cool ves

Effect of Oral Versus Nasal Breathing on Muscular Performance, Muscle Oxygenation, and Post-Exercise Recovery.

Nitric oxide (NO) plays a crucial role in muscle oxidative capacity, which predicts muscle strength. This study aimed to investigate whether different breathing techniques (nasal or oral breathing) affect muscle performance during acute exhaustive exercise. In our study, 49 healthy individuals (24♀/25♂; age 22.8 ± 3.4 years) performed two Wingate anaerobic tests in a counterbalanced order. Although perceived exertion was significantly higher with oral breathing (Borg Scale: 9.0 ± 1.1 vs. 8.0 ± 1.3, p = 0.04), breathing mode did not impact power output (peak: 749 ± 290 vs. 728 ± 284 W; average:

Impact of blood flow restriction intensity on pain perception and muscle recovery post-eccentric exercise.

BACKGROUND: Delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) is a well-established phenomenon characterized by ultrastructural muscle damage that typically develops following unfamiliar or high-intensity exercise. DOMS manifests with a constellation of symptoms, including muscle tenderness, stiffness, edema, mechanical hyperalgesia, and a reduced range of joint motion. In recent years, the application of blood flow restriction (BFR) has garnered attention for its potential impact on DOMS. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the effects of different BFR intensities on biomechanical alterations indu

Treadmill Exercise Enhances Post-Stroke Functional Recovery in Mice via the CX3CL1/CX3CR1 Signaling Pathway.

To validate that treadmill exercise promotes neurofunctional recovery post ischemic stroke and to specifically explore the role of the CX3CL1/CX3CR1 signaling pathway in this treadmill-mediated recovery process. C57BL/6 J mice were used to establish a middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) model. From days 5 to 28 post-stroke, the experimental group did 10-min treadmill sessions twice daily at 12 r/min; the control group remained inactive. On day 6 post-stroke, mice received three intraperitoneal injections of Bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU) or PBS. On days 1, 3, and 5 post-stroke, mice received int

Effect of Polyphenol Supplementation on Post-Exercise Recovery in Adult Male Soccer Players: A Systematic Review.

Background/Objectives: Soccer involves high physiological demands that induce neuromuscular fatigue, muscle damage, inflammation, and oxidative stress, impairing recovery between training sessions and competitions. Polyphenols have been proposed as a nutritional strategy to modulate these responses; however, evidence in soccer players is limited and heterogeneous. This systematic review aimed to synthesize the evidence on the effects of polyphenol supplementation on post-exercise recovery in adult male soccer players. Methods: A systematic review was conducted following PRISMA guidelines, with
