Lassa fever survivors: long-term health effects and chronic sequelae - a scoping review.

INTRODUCTION: Lassa fever is a viral haemorrhagic disease endemic to West Africa. While most infections are mild, severe cases have high morbidity and mortality, with case fatality rates ranging from 15% in mild cases to 60% in severe cases. Survivors often experience chronic health complications, but these long-term effects remain understudied despite their public health significance. OBJECTIVES: This scoping review synthesises evidence on the long-term health sequelae of Lassa fever, maps key findings from existing studies, and identifies critical gaps to guide future research and clinical c

Lessons from irritable bowel syndrome: potential for understanding and managing post-COVID.

Post-COVID presents a complex medical challenge characterized by persistent symptoms following SARS-CoV-2 infection. Similarities between post-COVID and post-infectious Irritable Bowel Syndrome (PI-IBS) suggest that the latter can serve as a useful model for understanding pathophysiological mechanisms and developing therapeutic approaches. Both conditions are functional disorders triggered by an acute infection, with multifactorial etiology and limited biomarker-based diagnostics. The variability of symptoms and the high frequency of comorbidities make these disorders particularly difficult to

Post-Infectious Irritable Bowel Syndrome, an Inflammation-Immunological Model with Relevance for Other IBS and Functional Dyspepsia.

This review presents studies that support an inflammation-immunological model for the pathogenesis of post-infectious irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), and highlights recent studies that support a similar disease model in non-post-infectious IBS, in particular, diarrhoea-predominant IBS, as well as in post-infectious functional dyspepsia. These recent studies are highlighted to demonstrate that one line of research in functional gastrointestinal disorders has moved away from the old psychosomatic concepts. It is hoped that this will encourage future students of this field to explore the role of

Factors associated with the development of post-infectious functional gastrointestinal diseases: does smoking play a role?

OBJECTIVES: Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is associated with psychological stress, alterations in gut motor function and/or visceral perception. Previous studies suggest 7-32% of people develop IBS after bacterial gastroenteritis but the exact mechanisms underlying post-infectious IBS are not clear. The present study's aim was to examine the role of possible causative factors in the development of post-infectious functional gastro-intestinal disorders (FGIDs), including IBS. METHODS: A prospective cohort study where 122 people without a prior FGID under study and with stool-positive bacteria

[Inflammatory pathology of the spinal cord].

Diagnosis of myelopathy whatever its cause, is based on clinical findings: paraparesis, loss of sensibility, sphincterian disturbance. Diagnosis of myelopathy requires magnetic resonance imaging, which rules out compressive and vascular disorders. Main causes of inflammatory myelopathies are multiple sclerosis multisystemic disorders, infectious and post-infectious diseases. Absence of identifiable causes in one quarter of the cases leads to the diagnosis of idiopathic myelitis.

Post-Coronavirus Disease (COVID)-19 Irritable Bowel Syndrome: What We've Learned So Far.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic has unveiled a hidden epidemic of disorders of gut-brain interaction (DGBIs), notably post-infection irritable bowel syndrome (PI-IBS), driven by SARS-CoV-2 GI tropism and pandemic stressors. PURPOSE: This review synthesizes and critically appraises current evidence on the prevalence, clinical spectrum, and predictors of post-COVID-19 IBS, integrating mechanistic insights. Topics discussed in this review will advance understanding of pathophysiological mechanisms, identify therapeutic targets, inform phenotype-tailored management and clinical care, and outlin

Post-infectious sequelae of travelers' diarrhea.

BACKGROUND: Travelers' diarrhea (TD) has generally been considered a self-limited disorder which resolves more quickly with expeditious and appropriate antibiotic therapy given bacteria are the most frequently identified cause. However, epidemiological, clinical, and basic science evidence identifying a number of chronic health conditions related to these infections has recently emerged which challenges this current paradigm. These include serious and potentially disabling enteric and extra-intestinal long-term complications. Among these are rheumatologic, neurologic, gastrointestinal, renal,

Reframing ME/CFS: toward a unified mechanistic model of chronic post-infectious diseases.

BACKGROUND: Myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS) is a severe multisystem illness marked by post-exertional malaise (PEM), cognitive dysfunction, autonomic disturbance, and impaired physiological resilience. Historically, the absence of validated biomarkers, heterogeneous definitions, and limited investigative capacity have complicated mechanistic interpretation and contributed to the use of psychosocial and rehabilitative frameworks in clinical practice and in parts of the literature. MAIN BODY: Advances in systems biology, accelerated by Long-COVID research, have trans

Research trends and hotspots on global influenza and inflammatory response based on bibliometrics.

The influenza virus is considered as a kind of significant zoonotic infectious disease identified to date, with severe infections in humans characterized by excessive inflammation and tissue damage, usually resulting in serious complications. Although the molecular mechanisms underlying inflammation after influenza infection have been extensively studied, bibliometric analysis on the research hotspots and developing trends in this field has not been published heretofore. Articles related to influenza and inflammatory response were retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC) datab

Pediatric neuropsychiatric disorders with motor and nonmotor phenomena.

The concept of pediatric autoimmune neuropsychiatric disorders associated with group A beta-hemolytic streptococcus (PANDAS) has become seminal since first introduced more than two decades ago. At the time of this writing, most neurologists, pediatricians, psychiatrists, and general pediatricians will probably have heard of this association or treated an affected child with PANDAS. The concept of an acute-onset, and typically self-limited, postinfectious autoimmune neuropsychiatric disorder resembling PANDAS manifesting vocal and motor tics and obsessive-compulsive disorder has broadened to ot

Herpes simplex virus-1 as a rare etiology of isolated acute cerebellitis: case report and literature review.

Acute cerebellitis is one of the most common cerebellar disorders and occurs due to para-infectious, post-infectious, or post-vaccination cerebellar inflammation. Herpes simplex virus-1 (HSV-1) is known as a common infectious cause of sporadic encephalitis. Cerebellar involvement of HSV-1 is rare and almost always associated with meningoencephalitis. To date, HSV-1 has been identified as the cause of acute isolated cerebellitis in only two patients. Here we report another case of isolated acute cerebellitis caused by HSV-1 in a 20-month-old boy.

The Risk of Chronic Gastrointestinal Disorders Following Acute Infection with Intestinal Parasites.

Background: Infectious gastroenteritis (IGE) is caused by numerous bacterial, viral, and parasitic pathogens. A history of IGE has been shown in previous studies to increase the risk of developing chronic gastrointestinal disorders and other chronic conditions. As bacteria and viruses represent the majority of pathogen-specific causes of IGE, post-infectious studies have primarily focused on these organisms. The objective of this study was to investigate an association between a history of parasite-associated IGE and the subsequent development of chronic post-infectious gastrointestinal and no

Brain [18F]FDG-PET in Encephalitis and Postinfectious Neurocognitive Syndromes.

Brain [18F]FDG PET can reveal metabolic abnormalities that precede, exceed, or clarify structural MR imaging findings. Among inflammatory brain diseases, the strongest clinical rationale is currently in autoimmune encephalitis, where fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) PET increases diagnostic sensitivity, supports syndrome-oriented metabolic pattern recognition, and may contribute to selected follow-up. In viral encephalitis, use is selective rather than routine. In post-coronavirus infectious disease (COVID) condition and related postinfectious syndromes, FDG PET may support biological stratification a

Burden of Social and Behavioral Determinants of Health on Infectious Complications in Emergency General Surgery.

Background: Infectious complications lead to worse post-operative outcomes and are used to compare hospital performance in pay-for-performance programs. However, the impact of social and behavioral determinants of health on infectious complication rates after emergency general surgery (EGS) remains unclear. Patients and Methods: All patients undergoing EGS in the 2019 Nationwide Readmissions Database were included. The primary outcome of the study was the rate of infectious complications within 30 days, defined as a composite outcome including all infectious complications occurring during the

Post-Infectious Fatigue and Depression Following Dengue: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Associated Factors.

Post-dengue fatigue syndrome is a debilitating long-term condition that affects daily activities, quality of life, and productivity. Its underlying mechanisms remain unclear, but clinical similarities with post-dengue depression complicate differentiation. Therefore, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to identify and compare factors associated with post-dengue fatigue and post-dengue depression. We searched PubMed, Science Direct, Web of Science and Google Scholar databases until 6 June 2025, with an update performed on 31 December 2025. This systematic review was conducted acc

COVID-19 associated with encephalomyeloradiculitis and positive anti-aquaporin-4 antibodies: Cause or coincidence?

Neurologic complications are being recognized as important outcomes of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Pathogenesis is varied and incompletely understood, and may include neuroinvasion, indirect post-infectious neuroinflammation, and cerebrovascular pathologies. We present a case of COVID-19-related encephalomyeloradiculitis with clinical and magnetic resonance imaging characteristics of neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorders that was associated with anti-aquaporin-4 antibodies. Our case suggests post-infectious autoimmunity as a mechanism in at least a subset of patients with COVID-19-r

Differential diagnosis of white matter diseases in the tropics: An overview.

In hospitals in the tropics, the availability of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) facilities in urban areas and especially in teaching institutions have resulted in white matter diseases being frequently reported in a variety of clinical settings. Unlike the west where multiple sclerosis (MS) is the commonest white matter disease encountered, in the tropics, there are myriad causes for the same. Infectious and post infectious disorders probably account for the vast majority of these diseases. Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection tops the list of infective conditions. Central nervous sy

Early acute cerebellar ataxia after meningococcal B vaccine: a case report of a 7-month-old infant and a review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Acute cerebellar ataxia (ACA) and acute cerebellitis represent disorders characterized by a para-infectious, post-infectious, or post-vaccination cerebellar inflammation. They are relatively common neurologic disorders among children, and may follow infections, or, more rarely, vaccinations. Few cases are instead described among infants. Although the immunization with meningococcal group B (MenB) vaccine has been associated with some neurological side effects, suspected ACA has been reported only once in the literature. CASE PRESENTATION: we describe a 7-month-old female that pres

Functionality testing of stem cell grafts to predict infectious complications after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) is a routine clinical procedure performed to treat patients with haematological malignancies, primary immune deficiencies or metabolic disorders. Infections during lymphopenia after allogeneic HSCT are associated with high mortality and morbidity. Typical infectious agents are Epstein-Barr virus, cytomegalovirus, herpes simplex virus, varicella-zoster virus and fungi. The study aim was to evaluate whether measurement of the responses of antigen-specific T-cells, recognizing infectious pathogens would correlate

Post-acute sequelae after Lassa fever: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Post-acute sequelae are symptoms that persist or arise after the acute phase of an infection, but their frequency following outbreaks remains poorly understood. Recurrent Lassa fever outbreaks pose a significant public health threat in West Africa and may have long-term health effects. This study systematically reviewed the prevalence, incidence, duration, and characteristics of post-acute sequelae in survivors of Lassa virus infection. We searched PubMed and Web of Science up to November 17, 2025. Two reviewers screened and extracted data independently. We included six articles in the review.
