Observing posterior capsule lens haptics in living postoperative eyes.

The cycloscope, an aid for observing the ciliary body, was used to study lens haptic fixation in 100 living eyes (200 haptics). Although the whole aspect of the lens could be viewed in only about 20 haptics (10%), in 102 haptics (51%), judgment about whether fixation was in or out of the bag could be made based on the relationship of the visible part of the lens haptic and the surrounding tissues. Thus, the method was found to be useful in studying the fixation mechanism of posterior chamber lens haptics in living postoperative eyes. Two cases of J-loop posterior chamber lens implantation stud

Influence of Lens Power on IOL/Posterior Lens Capsule Interactions and IOL's PCO Potential.

PURPOSE: Severely myopic eyes have been associated with high posterior capsule opacification (PCO) incidence. Although it has been reported that myopic eyes have weaker or more delayed capsule adhesion than emmetropic eyes, it is unclear whether/how dioptric power and posterior curvature of IOLs affect IOLs' affinity for the posterior lens capsule (PLC) and their PCO potential. METHODS: To investigate this, acrylic foldable IOLs with increasing dioptric power of 6.0D (for high myopia), 20.0D, and 30.0D (for low/non-myopia) were tested on their binding affinity toward PLC and their ability to

Posterior capsule dynamics during femtosecond laser lens fragmentation.

PURPOSE: The dynamics of the posterior capsule during femtosecond laser lens fragmentation has received little attention in the literature. We analysed the movements of the posterior capsule to identify the rupture risk factors, if any, and to suggest possible modification of the laser spot energy pattern during fragmentation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Posterior capsule ruptures during fragmentation were identified over a 10-year period of femtosecond laser use. In addition, the dynamics of the posterior capsule were identified through the real-time swept-source OCT lateral view available during

Role of Decorin in Posterior Capsule Opacification and Eye Lens Development.

Decorin (DCN) is involved in a variety of physiological and pathological processes. Epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) of lens epithelial cells (LECs) has been proposed as a major cause for the development of posterior capsule opacification (PCO) after cataract surgery. We investigated the plausible target gene(s) that suppress PCO. The expression of Dcn was significantly upregulated in rat PCO tissues compared to that observed in the control using a microarray-based approach. LECs treated with fibroblast growth factor (FGF) 2 displayed an enhanced level of DCN expression, while LECs trea

Relationship between posterior capsule opacification and intraocular lens biocompatibility.

The type of healing process that occurs in response to cataract surgery and intraocular lens (IOL) implantation is dependent on a complex set of variables. Their interactions determine whether or not optical clarity is restored as a result of this procedure. In this process, wound healing entails cells undergoing either epithelial-mesenchymal transition, resulting in the generation of fibroblastic cells and accumulation of extracellular matrix, or lenticular structure formation. Such desperate cellular behaviors are regulated by the localized release of different cytokines, including transform

Bilateral rupture of the posterior capsule and intraocular lens dislocation from excessive eye rubbing.

UNLABELLED: We report an unusual case of a 36-year-old woman with severe atopic eczema who developed sudden-onset reduction of vision in the right eye following excessive eye rubbing 9 years after cataract surgery. Examination identified posterior capsule rupture with dislocation of the intraocular lens (IOL) posteriorly into the vitreous cavity in the right eye and posterior capsule rupture with mild dislocation of the IOL in the bag in the left eye. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of simultaneous bilateral posterior capsule rupture following uneventful surgery and secondary

Depletion of Myo/Nog Cells in the Lens Mitigates Posterior Capsule Opacification in Rabbits.

PURPOSE: Posterior capsule opacification (PCO) is a vision-impairing disease that occurs in some adults and most children after cataract surgery. Contractile myofibroblasts contribute to PCO by producing wrinkles in the lens capsule that scatter light. Myofibroblasts in the lens originate from Myo/Nog cells named for their expression of the MyoD transcription factor and bone morphogenetic protein inhibitor noggin. In this study we tested the effects of depleting Myo/Nog cells on development of PCO. METHODS: Myo/Nog cells were eliminated by injecting the G8 antibody conjugated to 3DNA nanocarr

Simple approach to secondary posterior chamber intraocular lens implantation in patients without a complete posterior lens capsule support.

We describe a simple new method of implanting secondary posterior chamber intraocular lenses (PC-IOLs) with ciliary sulcus fixation in patients with complete posterior lens capsule support. Two pairs of PC-9 needles (Alcon Surgical, Fort Worth, Tex) are involved, each pair connected by the Girth Hitch method, with a guiding needle on one end and a tying needle on the other. This ab externo technique overcomes many of the disadvantages noted in previous reports on secondary PC-IOL implantation.

Primary posterior chamber intraocular lens implantation in traumatic cataract with posterior capsule breaks.

BACKGROUND: In patients with incomplete posterior capsule support, posterior chamber intraocular lenses (PC-IOLs) were implanted with both haptics transscleral fixation. This causes more damage to the eye and may result in more complications. In patients with small posterior breaks, non-fixation or single haptic fixation may be adequate. METHODS: Thirty-two consecutive patients of traumatic cataract with posterior capsule breaks caused by penetrating eye trauma were retrospected. Posterior chamber intraocular lenses were implanted in all these patients with three techniques, ie, without fixat

Intraocular lens optic edge design for the prevention of posterior capsule opacification after cataract surgery.

BACKGROUND: Posterior capsule opacification (PCO) is a clouding of the posterior part of the lens capsule, a skin-like transparent structure, which surrounds the crystalline lens in the human eye. PCO is the most common postoperative complication following modern cataract surgery with implantation of a posterior chamber intraocular lens (IOL). The main symptoms of PCO are a decrease in visual acuity, 'cloudy', blurred vision and reduced contrast sensitivity. PCO is treated with a neodymium:YAG (Nd:YAG) laser to create a small opening in the opaque capsule and regain a clear central visual axis

[Secondary posterior chamber lenses. Implantation in intact, partially intact and missing posterior lens capsule].

Between January 1988 and December 1991, 63 patients (75 eyes) underwent secondary posterior chamber intraocular lens (IOL) implantation. The mean period since primary cataract extraction was 85 months, and the mean age of these patients was 58 years. In 47 eyes with extracapsular aphakia the IOL was ciliary sulcus-fixated following polishing of the posterior capsule and synecholysis. In 8 eyes with remnants of the posterior capsule an anterior vitrectomy was performed. In 17 virtually intracapsular aphakic eyes additional transscleral suturing of the IOL was required. Mean visual acuity (VA) i
