During propofol-induced general anesthesia, alpha rhythms measured using electroencephalography undergo a striking shift from posterior to anterior, termed anteriorization, where the ubiquitous waking alpha is lost and a frontal alpha emerges. The functional significance of alpha anteriorization and the precise brain regions contributing to the phenomenon are a mystery. While posterior alpha is thought to be generated by thalamocortical circuits connecting nuclei of the sensory thalamus with their cortical partners, the thalamic origins of the propofol-induced alpha remain poorly understood. BACKGROUND: The thalamus, affected early in multiple sclerosis (MS), is a heterogeneous composition of functionally distinct nuclei and is associated with fatigue, cognition, and other outcomes. However, most previous functional imaging studies considered the thalamus only as a whole.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate MS-related abnormalities in nuclei-specific thalamic functional connectivity (FC) and their associations with fatigue and cognitive outcomes.
METHODS: Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) was analyzed in 64 MS patients and 26 healthy controls (HC). Whole-brain FC

Many studies have implicated GABA(B) receptors in pain transmission mechanisms, especially in the spinal cord. In the thalamus, mRNA expression of the GABA(B(1b)) isoform was shown to be regulated in relay nuclei in response to chronic noxious input arising from experimental monoarthritis. GABA(B(1a)) and GABA(B2) mRNA expression was here determined by in situ hybridisation in the brain of control, 2, 4, 7 and 14 days monoarthritic rats, to evaluate whether this expression was regulated by chronic noxious input in thalamic nuclei. mRNA labelling was analysed quantitatively in the ventrobasal c

This study (Part I) covers the comparative structure of the thalamus and metathalamus in the prosimian superfamilies, Lorisoidea and Lemuroidea. Several lemuroid specimens, namely Lemus, Cheirogaleus, Microcebus, Avahi and Daubentonia, and lorisoid specimens such as Galago, Perodicticus and Loris have been used in this extensive study. The anterior nuclear group does not show much difference among these species, although attention is focussed on the differentiation of the principal anterior nucleus into anteromedial and anteroventral parts; the latter increases in structural complexity. The an

The thalamus comprises numerous nuclei that can be grouped into five major functional domains: (1) the reticular and intralaminar nuclei influence arousal and nociception, (2) sensory nuclei handle afferent pathways, (3) the effector nuclei are involved in motor function and language, (4) associative nuclei participate in higher cognitive functions and (5) limbic nuclei influence mood and motivation. The thalamic nuclei are mainly supplied by the following four cerebral arteries: paramedian artery, anterior thalamoperforating artery, thalamogeniculate artery and posterior choroidal artery (lat

OBJECTIVE: This study was undertaken to determine the thalamic nuclei that are different between juvenile myoclonic epilepsy (JME) and healthy controls from the Juvenile Myoclonic Epilepsy Connectome Project and then to determine their relationship with other subcortical gray matter volumes, disease covariates, and motor performance.
METHODS: Sixty-two patients with JME and 41 age-matched controls (mean age = 20 years) were examined using T1-weighted images. Thalamic nuclei volumes were compared after normalization to total intracranial volume. The relationship between thalamic nuclei volumes

A number of molecular and hodological experiments have provided evidence that there is an early commitment of neocortical neurons to express features unique to a certain cortical area. However, the findings of several transplantation experiments have indicated that late embryonic cortical tissue heterotopically grafted into the neocortex of newborn rats receives a set of thalamic projections appropriate for the host cortical locus within which it develops. To provide further information on the extent to which neocortical neurons are predetermined to develop area-specific systems of connections

A reduction in the volume of the thalamus and its nuclei has been reported in Alzheimer's disease, mild cognitive impairment and asymptomatic individuals with risk factors for early-onset Alzheimer's disease. Some studies have reported thalamic atrophy to occur prior to hippocampal atrophy, suggesting thalamic pathology may be an early sign of cognitive decline. We aimed to investigate volumetric differences in thalamic nuclei in middle-aged, cognitively unimpaired people with respect to dementia family history and apolipoprotein ε4 allele carriership and the relationship with cognition. Seven

The medial parabrachial nucleus (MPB) and external part of the medial parabrachial nucleus (MPBE) relay gustatory, oral mechanosensory and other visceral information in the rat brain and reportedly project not only to the parvicellular part of the posteromedial ventral thalamic nucleus (VPMpc) but also to the ventrocaudal part of the intralaminar thalamic nuclei. Generally, the intralaminar thalamic nuclei project topographically to the caudate putamen (CPu); however, it is unclear where the ventrocaudal part of the intralaminar thalamic nuclei projects within the CPu. Thus, we visualized neur

The distribution of thalamic cells projecting to the head of the caudate and their interrelations with thalamo-cortical cells were studied in the cat with different combinations of fluorescent tracers. Injections in the head of the caudate were combined with the injections in the pericruciate, proreal, suprasylvian, anterior cingulate, occipital and ectosylvian cortices. The following results were obtained: (i) Injections in the head of the caudate resulted in retrograde labeling of thalamic cells medially and laterally to the anteromedial (AM) nucleus, and in the medioventral part of the vent

The medial posterior parietal cortex of the primate brain includes different functional areas, which have been defined based on the functional properties, cyto- and myeloarchitectural criteria, and cortico-cortical connections. Here, we describe the thalamic projections to two of these areas (V6 and V6A), based on 14 retrograde neuronal tracer injections in 11 hemispheres of 9 Macaca fascicularis. The injections were placed either by direct visualisation or using electrophysiological guidance, and the location of injection sites was determined post mortem based on cyto- and myeloarchitectural

Four previously published cases of dominant thalamic lesion in which the author has participated are reviewed to gain a better understanding of thalamic participation in lexical-semantic functions. Naming deficits in two cases support Nadeau and Crosson's (1997) hypothesis of a selective engagement mechanism involving the frontal lobes, inferior thalamic peduncle, nucleus reticularis, and other thalamic nuclei, possibly the centromedian nucleus. This mechanism selectively engages those cortical areas required to perform a cognitive task, while maintaining other areas in a state of relative dis

Specific thalamic nuclei are implicated in healthy aging and age-related neurodegenerative diseases. However, few methods are available for robust automated segmentation of thalamic nuclei. The threefold aims of this study were to validate the use of a modified thalamic nuclei segmentation method on standard T1 MRI data, to apply this method to quantify age-related volume declines, and to test functional meaningfulness by predicting performance on motor testing. A modified version of THalamus Optimized Multi-Atlas Segmentation (THOMAS) generated 22 unilateral thalamic nuclei. For validation, w

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Disabling tremor might be the main cause of disability of multiple sclerosis (MS) patients. Neuromodulation with deep brain stimulation of the thalamic nucleus ventralis intermedius (Vim DBS) is a well accepted method of neurosurgical treatment of tremor related to essential tremor or Parkinson disease. Vim DBS is not widely used to control MS tremor.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Five MS patients with tremor (3 females and 2 males) were treated with Vim DBS. Age at implantation was 37 ± 5 years. MS lasted from 5 to 12 years (mean 6) and tremor was the main cause of disability

Dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) is characterized by progressive dementia with two of three core symptoms; Parkinsonism, visual hallucinations or disturbances of consciousness/fluctuating attention. Dementia in Parkinson's disease (PDD) has similar neuropsychiatric characteristics. Reduced nigrothalamic dopamine and altered thalamic D2 receptors may mediate some of the non-motor symptoms of DLB and PDD. The study aims were to ascertain whether thalamic D2 density was altered in Parkinson's disease (PD), PDD and DLB, and whether D2 density was related to core symptoms. Thalamic D2 receptor bindi

OBJECTIVE: To report the results of ventralis intermedius nucleus/ventralis oralis posterior nucleus (VIM) plus ventralis oralis anterior (VOA)/ventralis oralis posterior (VOP) thalamic deep brain stimulation (DBS) for the treatment of posttraumatic and multiple sclerosis tremor.
OBJECTIVE: The treatment of posttraumatic tremor and multiple sclerosis tremor, by either medication or surgery, has proven difficult. Lesions and DBS have had mixed and somewhat disappointing results. Previously, we reported the use of two DBS electrodes (one at the VIM/VOP border and one at the VOA/VOP border) as e

BACKGROUND: Anti-N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor (NMDAR) encephalitis (anti-NMDAR encephalitis) is one of the most common types of autoimmune encephalitis in children, characterized by neuropsychiatric syndromes such as memory deficits, verbal apraxia and complex movement disorders. Evidence indicates thalamic abnormalities in anti-NMDAR encephalitis, yet existing studies have predominantly examined the thalamus only as an undifferentiated whole, particularly within the pediatric population. This study specifically characterized thalamic abnormalities in pediatric anti-NMDAR encephalitis at subn

Four patients of thalamic strokes with different symptoms are reported. The first had thalamic haemorrhage and developed delayed blepharospasm. The second patient had occlusion of posterior cerebral artery causing infarction of lateral thalamus and occipital lobes. The remaining two patients exhibited ipsilateral hemisensory loss and hemiataxia in absence of hemiparesis (thalamic ataxia). Both had circumscribed lesions in lateral thalamus. 'Thalamic ataxia' has a distinct localizing value. Thalamic strokes produce heterogenous clinical manifestations attributed to the involvement of different

Focal dystonia has been attributed to lesions involving the basal ganglia and/or thalamus. Hand dystonia was studied in a patient with a unilateral thalamic infarction documented by MRI. A 18-year-old girl presented with severe isolated dystonia of the right hand as a sequel of perinatal infarction. MRI scan revealed infarction affecting part of the dorsomedian, lateral posterior, ventral lateral, ventral posterior lateral nuclei, and centromedian-parafascicular nucleus of the contralateral thalamus. The unique MRI anatomoclinical presentation of this case, taken together with the literature d

BACKGROUND: The thalamus serves as a critical relay hub for transmitting peripheral nociceptive information to the cerebral cortex and plays a central role in the sensory, motor, affective, and cognitive dimensions of pain processing. However, the dynamic response patterns of distinct thalamic nuclei during stimulus-pain processing remain poorly understood.
METHODS: In this study, fiber photometry was employed to record calcium (Ca2+) signals from multiple thalamic nuclei under two intensities of nociceptive somatic stimulation.
RESULTS: The results showed that all recorded nuclei exhibited
