Canadian Women's Experience of Postnatal Care: A Mixed Method Study.

BACKGROUND: The postnatal period remains unstandardized in terms of care and postnatal visits with a dearth of information on the experience from Canadian women. PURPOSE: To explore (1) with whom and how often women receive postnatal follow-up visits and (2) the postnatal care experiences of Canadian mothers. METHODS: Using a cross-sectional design, women who had given birth within the past 6 months were recruited to complete an online survey. Frequencies were computed for quantitative outcomes and thematic analysis was used for qualitative responses. RESULTS: A total of 561 mothers complet

Postnatal Steroids Use for Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia in a Quaternary Care NICU.

OBJECTIVE: Intercenter variation and trends in postnatal steroids (PNS) use among preterm infants for prevention or treatment of bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) is known. Understanding intracenter PNS use patterns facilitate implementation of center-specific change interventions to optimize outcomes. This study aimed to (i) quantify the proportion of infants who received PNS, and describe the timing, type, trends over time, regimen used, and deviations, and (2) describe the clinical characteristics and unadjusted outcomes of infants who received PNS. STUDY DESIGN: This was a cohort study in a

Factors influencing early postnatal care use among postpartum women in Afghanistan.

Using postnatal care (PNC) within the first week following childbirth is crucial, as both the mother and her baby are particularly vulnerable to infections and mortality during this period. In this study, we examined the factors associated with early postnatal care (EPNC) use in Afghanistan. We used data from the multiple indicator cluster survey (MICS) 2022-2023. The study population was ever-married women who delivered a live child during their recent pregnancy within the 2 years preceding MICS 2022-23. The outcome was EPNC and defined as the first check of the mother within the first week o

Congenital chylothorax with hydrops: postnatal care and outcome following antenatal diagnosis.

We consecutively managed 25 cases of fetal chylothorax with hydrops (pleuroamniotic shunting in 20/25 cases). Three of the 16 liveborn infants died before day 5 from malformations (n = 1) or complications of antenatal origin (n = 2). Eleven of the 13 survivors were treated in our unit. Four infants whose chylothorax had resolved before birth following antenatal shunting were delivered at term, and had no respiratory disease. Seven infants, whose chylothorax persisted, were delivered prematurely and required intensive respiratory care (with mechanical ventilation for a median duration of 34 day

Experiences of Respectful Maternity Care among postnatal women at a tertiary care hospital in new Delhi.

BACKGROUND: Compassionate support and a nurturing environment are essential for a positive, dignified birthing experience. A dearth of respectful maternity care not only undermines the overall quality of services but also has far-reaching implications on women's healthcare-seeking behaviour and trust in the health system. Despite increasing institutional deliveries in India, evidence suggests that mistreatment and lack of respectful care persist in healthcare settings. This study assesses the experiences of RMC among postnatal women in a tertiary care hospital in New Delhi and explores its ass

Postnatal care could be the key to improving the continuum of care in maternal and child health in Ratanakiri, Cambodia.

In South-East Asia, the maternal and child mortality rate has declined over the past decades; however, it varies among and within the countries in the region, including Cambodia. The continuum of care is an integrated series of care that women and children are required to avail continuously from pregnancy to the child/motherhood period. This study aimed to assess the completion rate of the continuum of care and examine the factors associated with the continuum of care in Ratanakiri, Cambodia. A cross-sectional study was conducted in Ratanakiri. Overall, 377 women were included, and data were c

Postnatal Care Practice and the Facilitating Factors Among Japanese Primary Care Physicians: A Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Postnatal care encompasses multiple health and social domains requiring a comprehensive approach. Primary care physicians (PCPs) are well-positioned to provide postnatal care, but research on their practice remains limited. This study aimed to investigate PCPs' practice frequency and attitudes toward postnatal care, and to examine PCP attributes associated with postnatal care provision. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study with an online questionnaire targeting certified PCPs via the Japan Primary Care Association. The questionnaire assessed frequency, perceived importanc

Postnatal Cytomegalovirus Infection in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit: A Retrospective Study.

INTRODUCTION: Postnatal cytomegalovirus (pCMV) infection is a relevant cause of morbidity in preterm infants, particularly those born extremely preterm or with very low birth weight. This study aimed to describe the clinical manifestations, management, and outcomes of neonates with pCMV infection admitted to a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). METHODS: We conducted a retrospective case series of 12 neonates diagnosed with pCMV infection between 2013 and 2024 in a level III NICU. Congenital cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection was excluded by negative urine testing within the first two weeks of

Postnatal care after gestational diabetes - a systematic review of clinical practice guidelines.

BACKGROUND: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is the most common metabolic disorder in pregnancy and later is associated with an increased risk of type 2 diabetes and other metabolic disorders. Consistent and evidence based postnatal care is key to improving maternal long-term health. We therefore aimed to review and compare recommendations of national and international clinical practice guidelines (CPG) for postnatal care after GDM and identify any evidence gaps in recommendations needing further research. METHODS: We searched five databases and forty professional organization websites for

A Statewide Medicaid Enhanced Prenatal and Postnatal Care Program and Infant Injuries.

To compare infant injuries in the first year of life between Maternal Infant Health Program (MIHP) participants and matched comparison groups. The population was the cohort of Medicaid-insured singleton infants born in 2011 in Michigan who had continuous Medicaid insurance and survived the first year after birth (N = 51,078). Propensity score matching was used to compare participants in MIHP to matched comparison groups from among the nonparticipants. Injury episodes were defined based on Medicaid claims in the first year of life. Matched comparisons were performed using McNemar, Bowker, and W

Postnatal care for newborns in Bangladesh: The importance of health-related factors and location.

BACKGROUND: Bangladesh achieved Millennium Development Goal 4, a two thirds reduction in under-five mortality from 1990 to 2015. However neonatal mortality remains high, and neonatal deaths now account for 62% of under-five deaths in Bangladesh. The objective of this paper is to understand which newborns in Bangladesh are receiving postnatal care (PNC), a set of interventions with the potential to reduce neonatal mortality. METHODS: Using data from the Bangladesh Maternal Mortality Survey (BMMS) 2010 we conducted logistic regression analysis to understand what socio-economic and health-relate

Concurrent spontaneous coronary dissection and reversible cerebral vasoconstriction syndrome during postnatal care.

BACKGROUND: Pregnancy-associated spontaneous coronary artery dissection (SCAD) and reversible cerebral vasoconstriction syndrome (RCVS) are rare conditions that may occur during pregnancy and the postpartum period. The coexistence of both diseases may pose a risk to patients, potentially resulting in a variety of complications and clinical manifestations. This is considered the first case of a patient who successfully recovered from a critical condition in the postpartum period, with contemporaneous SCAD and RCVS. CASE PRESENTATION: A 33-year-old female with no known medical history was refer
