Cortical control of postural balance in patients with hemiplegic stroke.

Despite its remarkable effect on the activities of daily living, the precise mechanism underlying balance control after stroke remains to be elucidated. In this study, we investigated the cortical activation induced by postural perturbation in 20 patients with stroke using a 50-channel event-related functional near-infrared spectroscopy. A combination of brisk forward and backward movements of a platform without any prior cue was used as an external postural perturbation. Multi-participant analysis of oxygenated hemoglobin signals showed postural perturbation-related cortical activation in the

The trunk's contribution to postural control under challenging balance conditions.

BACKGROUND: The double inverted pendulum model is imprecise when applied to studies of postural control. Although multijoint analyses have improved our understanding of how balance is maintained, the exact role of the trunk remains unclear. RESEARCH QUESTIONS: What is the trunk's contribution in postural control with respect to the other joints and how do trunk muscles control trunk kinematics? METHODS: Thirty-six healthy athletes (handball, karate, long jump) performed a highly challenging balance task while the ground support was dynamically tilted in the sagittal plane. The center of forc

Stressing the postural response. A quantitative method for testing balance.

Using a series of graded destabilizing forces, we have developed a simple quantitative test of the postural response: the Postural Stress Test (PST). Suitable for widespread testing of elderly subjects, the test evaluates the subject's ability to avoid a fall as well as the appropriateness of the response. We have determined that by comparison with young subjects, the elderly controls have compromised although functionally effective balance. On the other hand, the balance response was severely compromised in half of the individuals with a history of falls. Experience with the Postural Stress T

Improving Postural Balance in Dentoalveolar Malocclusion Patients Using a Vibrotactile Posture Trainer Device.

The biomechanical relationship between the body and teeth suggested that posture imbalance can lead to dentoalveolar malocclusion. A randomized crossover trial was conducted to compare body posture measure using tilt angles of the neck and center of pressure of the malocclusion patients that received vibrotactile biofeedback from the posture trainer device with those who received no feedback. The results showed that the system is associated with quantitative improvements of the body posture in malocclusion patients.

Biomechanical assessment of balance and posture in subjects with ankylosing spondylitis.

BACKGROUND: Ankylosing spondylitis is a major chronic rheumatic disease that predominantly affects axial joints, determining a rigid spine from the occiput to the sacrum. The dorsal hyperkyphosis may induce the patients to stand in a stooped position with consequent restriction in patients' daily living activities. The aim of this study was to develop a method for quantitatively and objectively assessing both balance and posture and their mutual relationship in ankylosing spondylitis subjects. METHODS: The data of 12 healthy and 12 ankylosing spondylitis subjects (treated with anti-TNF-α stab

Muscle fatigue and postural balance reorganisation during exoskeleton-assisted load handling.

RESEARCH QUESTION: Upper-limb exoskeletons are known to reduce local muscle strain, but their impact on global postural regulation remains unclear. This study investigated whether upper-limb exoskeleton usage induces a compensatory trade-off in postural stability or a fundamental reorganisation of motor control strategies during sustained static loading. METHODS: Nineteen healthy participants performed a static holding task (10 kg) to exhaustion under two conditions: with and without a passive upper-limb exoskeleton. Neuromuscular fatigue was assessed via surface electromyography (sEMG) spect

Does piriformis muscle syndrome impair postural balance? A case control study.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: While patients with musculoskeletal disorders reported postural balance impairments, it is unknown whether patients with piriformis muscle syndrome (PMS) may exhibit postural balance disorders compared to controls. The aim was to compare postural balance in patients with PMS to controls in static and dynamic conditions. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Twelve patients with PMS and twelve controls were enrolled. Static postural balance was assessed by calculating the symmetry index (SI) in the unipedal posture. To measure vision contribution, the Romberg index (RI) was computed. D

Prenatal exposure to alcohol affects the ability to maintain postural balance.

Prenatal exposure to alcohol is known to affect gross motor functioning. Animal studies have shown that balance is particularly affected, and there is some evidence that similar deficits exist in alcohol-exposed children. In the current study, postural balance, or the ability to maintain equilibrium, was assessed in a group of alcohol-exposed children (ALC group; n = 11) and controls (NC group; n = 11) individually matched for age and sex. Balance was measured across six conditions designed to systematically manipulate or eliminate visual or somatosensory information. Equilibrium and strategy

The effects of repetitive haemarthrosis on postural balance in children with haemophilia.

Sensory information from visual, vestibular and proprioceptive systems is necessary to control posture and balance. Impairment in proprioception due to repetitive joints bleeding may lead to a deficit in postural balance which, in turn, leads to high joint stress and risk of bleeding recurrence. Despite the increase in attention in this field during the past few years, the data concerning to how bleeds can affect postural control in children with haemophilia (CWH) remain scarce. This study aimed to evaluate the postural balance in CWH. Twenty CWH Haemophilia Group (HG) and 20 age-matched child

Evaluation of postural balance in patients with obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome.

INTRODUCTION: Patients with obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome (OSAS) can be more prone to accidents due to excessive daytime sleepiness which can lead to attention deficits and thereby cause balance problems. One of the tests evaluating postural balance is static posturography (SPG). In this study, we aimed to evaluate postural balance with SPG in OSAS patients. METHODS: Patients who were referred to a sleep disorders outpatient clinic of a tertiary health care centre with snoring, daytime sleepiness or witnessed apnoea were enrolled consecutively in this cross-sectional study. They were grou
