Exploring the Area-Level Link Between Poverty and Different Types of Child Maltreatment: Is Neglect the Most Pronounced?

We investigated whether poverty is primarily associated with neglect while showing weaker links to other forms of child maltreatment at the zip code level. To do this, we analyzed relationships between child poverty rates and maltreatment report rates for neglect, physical abuse, and sexual abuse across all Illinois zip codes from 2014 to 2018 (N = 1354). Our analysis showed that the unstandardized effect sizes for neglect were larger than those for physical and sexual abuse, primarily due to the higher prevalence of neglect reports, which leads to a larger absolute change. However, because un

Short-and Long-term Patient Outcomes in Hospitals Primarily Serving Patients with Colorectal Cancer from High-Poverty Areas-An Observational Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Prior evidence indicate that differences in treatment settings between patients with colorectal cancer (CRC) from high-poverty areas (HPA, ≥ 20% residents living under poverty level) and low-poverty areas (LPA) might have contributed to disparities in their health outcomes. We sought to determine whether certain hospitals predominantly provided surgical care for patients with CRC from HPAs and examine associated patient outcomes. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We identified patients undergoing surgery for nonmetastatic CRC diagnosed during 1/1/2009-12/31/2019 from SEER-Medicare. We defined

Analysis of death causes of residents in poverty-stricken Areas in 2020: take Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture in China as an example.

BACKGROUND: Continuous surveillance of death can measure health status of the population, reflect social development of a region, thus promote health service development in the region and improve the health level of local residents. Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture was a poverty-stricken region in Sichuan province, China. While at the end of 2020, as the announcement of its last seven former severely impoverished counties had shaken off poverty, Liangshan declared victory against poverty. Since it is well known that the mortality and cause of death structure will undergo some undesirable cha

Equality and poverty: views from managers and professionals from public services and household heads in the Belo Horizonte Metropolitan Area, Brazil.

BACKGROUND: Tackling poverty requires reconsideration of quantitative factors related to "who" is poor and by "how much" and qualitative factors addressing "what poverty means in these individuals' lives". Greater understanding is required concerning the types of access actually used by families in poverty in attempts to meet their basic needs. Poverty must be addressed based on the question: "Inequality of what?" It is in reflecting on the realities of such groups when their basic needs are not met that public policies can be improved and implemented with legitimate priorities. OBJECTIVE: De

[Poverty in Mexico. II. Magnitude].

This is the second part of a research report on the evolution and magnitude of poverty in Mexico. Application of the Integrated Poverty Measurement Method, explained in the first part of this report, shows a poverty headcount ratio (H) of 70.6% and an extreme poverty H of 44.7%. H turns out higher by the UBN (Unsatisfied Basic Needs) method than by the PLT (Poverty Line plus working time) approach. The poverty gap or poverty intensity (I), is for all poor 0.44 but reaches 0.58 for the extremely poor. Both H and I are substantially higher in the rural than in the urban areas. UBN poverty gap is

[Perception of the food environment by Brazilian slum residents: a qualitative study].

Food availability in the territory can influence food consumption by the population. However, it is important to understand how people perceive their food environment to see how food availability affects consumption in different contexts. This study aimed to assess the perception of the food environment by Brazilian slum residents in their neighborhoods. This is a qualitative study, with online focus groups guided by a script in order to gather collective discourses about access to food in Brazilian slums. The invitation to participate in this study was made through social media, and community

Impoverishment impact of out-of-pocket payments for healthcare in rural Bangladesh: Do the regions facing different climate change risks matter?

INTRODUCTION: Out-of-pocket (OOP) payments for healthcare severely affect the current consumption, future health and earnings capacity of poor/underprivileged households and hence it is crucial for priority setting. This study assesses the variation in overall as well as disease-specific impoverishment impact of OOP payments between the regions experiencing different climate change risks, defined as high disaster-prone (HDP) areas and low-disaster-prone (LDP) areas, in Bangladesh. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This paper estimated three poverty measures, such as poverty headcount, poverty intensity

Predictive risk mapping of an environmentally-driven infectious disease using spatial Bayesian networks: A case study of leptospirosis in Fiji.

INTRODUCTION: Leptospirosis is a zoonotic disease responsible for over 1 million severe cases and 60,000 deaths annually. The wide range of animal hosts and complex environmental drivers of transmission make targeted interventions challenging, particularly when restricted to regression-based analyses which have limited ability to deal with complexity. In Fiji, important environmental and socio-demographic factors include living in rural areas, poverty, and livestock exposure. This study aims to examine drivers of transmission under different scenarios of environmental and livestock exposures.
