The use of CDA best management practices and amalgam separators to improve the management of dental wastewater.

Concerns over the persistence and effects of mercury in the environment, particularly in wastewater, have increased significantly over the past decade. Because mercury is a component of dental amalgam, comprising about 50 percent of amalgam among other metals, in recent years the concern has affected dental practices and even educational curricula in the dental schools. While numbers vary widely from area to area, on average, it is estimated dentistry contributes less than 1 percent of the mercury generated from human activity to the environment. Despite dentistry's low contribution to the env

Diagnosis and management of X-linked hypophosphatemia in dental practice: A scoping review.

X-linked hypophosphatemia (XLH) is a PHEX-related disorder causing elevated FGF23, chronic hypophosphatemia, and impaired skeletal and dental mineralization, leading to frequent endodontic abscess in clinically sound teeth due to intrinsic structural failure, periapical lesions and early tooth loss. To address the lack of standardized oral management, a comprehensive literature review was conducted using EMBASE, MEDLINE, PubMed, Scopus, and Cochrane databases (1988-2024), adhering to PRISMA-ScR guidelines. Based on this evidence, multidisciplinary recommendations were developed to provide diag

Gag reflex management in dental practice: a bibliometric analysis from 2000 to 2025.

BACKGROUND: The gag reflex is a common challenge in dental practice, often causing discomfort and leading to treatment avoidance, especially during procedures like taking dental impressions. Although both pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments are utilized to manage the gag reflex, current evidence supporting the routine use of these interventions is limited, highlighting the need for further research. To optimize gag reflex management and identify future research trends through a bibliometric analysis. METHODS: Data from eligible studies were extracted through a comprehensive sea

Integrating patient-centered caries management in dental education-A practical approach.

Caries management is undergoing an evolution in dental education. This is part of a larger change in thinking focused on the person/patient as well as procedures to bring health to people. This perspective attempts to tell the story of the dental education culture regarding caries management from perspectives of evidence-based care; caries as a disease of a person, not only a tooth; and the management of high-risk and low-risk individuals. Culturally and organizationally, the integration of basic, procedural, behavioral, and demographic perspectives for dental caries has happened at different

The prevalence and practice management consequences of dental fear in a major US city.

In 1986, 1,019 residents of Seattle were surveyed about their dental fears, dental experiences, and perceived oral health status. High dental fear in Seattle was found to affect 204 per 1,000 people. More than 66% acquired their fear in early childhood. Females were 1.8 times more likely than males to report high fear (P less than .001). An individual was 1.6 times as likely to have high levels of dental fear if he or she had at least one oral problem such as bleeding gingiva (P = .004).

Prospective Evaluation of Dental Practitioners' Knowledge, Attitude, and Practice Toward Adult Dental Pain Management: A Cross-Sectional Multicenter Study.

Background Dental pain among adults is a prevalent concern impacting oral health and quality of life. Dental pain management presents a significant challenge for dental practitioners in effectively alleviating patient discomfort. Among the medications available, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are considered the most effective analgesics in dental care. While numerous studies have been conducted to assess the role of antibiotics in dental practice, there is a scarcity of studies specifically examining the prescription patterns of analgesics. The primary aim of this study was to

Implementing a disease management standard operating procedure in a contemporary private pediatric dental practice.

INTRODUCTION: Dental caries is a prevalent childhood condition with significant health and economic consequences. Disease management techniques, such as silver diamine fluoride (SDF) and sealants, have emerged as alternatives to traditional restorative care. This study describes the implementation of a disease management protocol in a large, multi-site private pediatric dental practice. METHODS: A retrospective descriptive cohort analysis was conducted using de-identified electronic health record data from Montshire Pediatric Dentistry at one of its nine locations between August 2018 and June

Prosthodontic management of older severe hypodontia patients in general dental practice: a case series.

Although a detailed understanding of the etiology of hypodontia is lacking, there is a need for awareness among dental professionals of the social and psychological consequences of severe hypodontia, as well as knowledge of those affected by hypodontia have ongoing dental treatment needs. Although, there may be a need for immediate referral of children to different specialists for optimal multidisciplinary treatment planning, most older patients with severe hypodontia can be treated by general practitioners. Practitioners therefore need to be aware of the ramifications of the condition and be

Swallowed and aspirated dental prostheses and instruments in clinical dental practice: a report of five cases and a proposed management algorithm.

BACKGROUND: Accidental swallowing or aspiration of dental instruments and prostheses is a complication of dental procedures. Failure to manage these complications appropriately can lead to significant morbidity and possibly death. CASE DESCRIPTION: The authors present three cases of accidental swallowing of dental instruments during procedures and two cases of aspiration, one during a procedure and one long after the procedure. Although three of these five cases of foreign-body aspiration or ingestion were caught early and the patients were referred for endoscopic retrieval, two patients expe

Producing guidance for the management of patients with chronic periodontal disease in general dental practice.

The vast majority of patients will experience gingival-related disease at some point in their life, and up to a quarter of those are susceptible to advanced periodontal disease. This makes its effective management an important part of general dental practice. This paper provides guidance on management which incorporates periodontal assessment, management and recall according to patient's oral hygiene and modifiable risk factors. This has been produced in flow diagram format to aid non-surgical management of chronic gingival and periodontal disease in general dental practice.

Artificial intelligence in dentistry: from second reading of bite-wing radiographs to dental practice management.

Artificial intelligence is moving in dentistry from experimental applications to practical tools for diagnosis, patient communication and practice management. The most mature field is the analysis of imaging data, including bite-wing, periapical and panoramic radiographs and cone-beam computed tomography. Human reading of bite-wing radiographs, particularly for early approximal enamel caries, is associated with substantial under-detection; in the ADEPT study dentists without artificial intelligence support detected 44.3% of enamel-only proximal lesions, compared with 75.8% with such support. Treatment of the Dental Patient with Bleeding Dyscrasias: Etiologies and Management Options for Surgical Success in Practice.

The oral health care provider sees a significant number of patients in his or her practice who suffer from systemic diseases affecting the ability to clot. These medical issues can be acquired or inherited bleeding dyscrasias requiring pharmacologic therapy during the perioperative period. Patients with inherited or acquired bleeding disorders require careful attention with respect to the assessment of bleeding risk. This article develops algorithms to manage acquired and inherited bleeding dyscrasias. These approaches include a discussion of the epidemiology of bleeding disorders in surgical
