The effects of propofol on anesthetic induction were evaluated in 40 dogs anesthetized with isoflurane. Propofol is a rapidly acting, nonbarbiturate drug that induces anesthesia of ultrashort duration with IV administration. Four preanesthetic regimens were used: anesthesia without preanesthetic drugs; or with preanesthetic administration of acepromazine (0.1 mg/kg of body weight, IM), diazepam (0.2 mg/kg, IV), or acepromazine (0.02 mg/kg) and butorphanol (0.4 mg/kg) IM. Heart rate, systolic arterial blood pressure (SAP), respiration, quality of induction and recovery, and adverse effects were

BACKGROUND: Penehyclidine hydrochloride (PHC) is an anticholinergic drug manufactured in China. It is used widely in clinics as a reversal agent in cases of organic phosphorus poisoning and as a preanesthetic medication. Compared with other anticholinergic agents, PHC confers substantial advantages. Here, in this review, we focus on its important clinical effects for organic phosphorus poisoning, preanesthetic medication, and the protective effects on certain visceral organs.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Our bibliographic sources include the PubMed and China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI)

Dogs given parenteral anticholinergic drugs have been thought to be at risk for development or exacerbation of elevated intraocular pressure (IOP). In a randomized, blinded, placebo-controlled study, we evaluated the effect of intramuscular glycopyrrolate (0.01 mg/kg) on pupil diameter and IOP in unanesthetized normal dogs. Treatment with glycopyrrolate did not change pupil diameter or IOP from baseline, nor were there differences between glycopyrrolate and saline-treated (control) dogs. In addition, the authors retrospectively reviewed the medical records of 2,828 dogs undergoing general anes

Butorphanol tartrate (0.05 mg/kg, im) was included in the preanesthetic medication in 15 out of 29 conditioned female mongrel dogs (22.7-27.3 kg body wt) undergoing renal autotransplants as part of a 48-h kidney preservation study. Four postoperative intussusceptions were noted (3 jejunojejunal, 1 ileocolic) among the 14 dogs without butorphanol, whereas no intussusceptions developed in the 15 dogs receiving butorphanol as part of the preanesthetic protocol. In a prior study, 2 out of 18 dogs undergoing renal autotransplants without the use of butorphanol as part of a 24-h kidney preservation

BACKGROUND: Ventricular tachycardia is an arrhythmia that, if not corrected, can lead to reduced ischemic stroke volume and cardiac output, resulting in low tissue perfusion.
AIM: To describe a case of ventricular tachycardia suppression using lidocaine and remifentanil in a dog during the transanesthetic period.
CASE DESCRIPTION: An 11-year-old Labrador Retriever dog with intraoral neoplasia was referred for hemimandibulectomy. Preanesthetic evaluation and complementary diagnostic tests revealed the presence of splenic neoplasia along with paroxysmal ventricular tachycardia. The preanesthet

The effects of different preanesthetic medications (acepromazine plus either meperidine or butorphanol) given before the induction of anesthesia with midazolam and ketamine on intraocular pressure, heart rate, and arterial blood pressure were investigated in 20 dogs. Following administration of preanesthetics and induction of anesthesia, dogs were intubated and anesthesia was maintained with halothane for 10 minutes. Intraocular pressure was significantly higher (P <.05) at several evaluations for dogs premedicated with acepromazine/meperidine than for those premedicated with acepromazine/buto

Intraoperative anesthetic complications can be prevented or minimized if the anesthetist is able to anticipate such problems in the preanesthetic period. Therefore, an adequate preanesthetic medical history that includes previous anesthetic experiences and past and current drug therapy is extremely important. Furthermore, the anesthetist must be properly trained to anticipate undesirable reactions to anesthetic agents. The signs of an impending disaster are subtle and nonspecific in the anesthetized patient. Therefore, continuous vigilance of the patient's physiologic status coupled with a hig

PURPOSE: Cataract surgery is the most commonly performed procedure in the world. However, certain perioperative modalities remain controversial, and the necessity of systematic performance of a preanesthetic consultation is gradually being questioned. The goal of this study was to investigate the anesthetic and surgical safety of performing cataract surgeries under topical or sub-Tenon's anesthesia without prior preanesthetic consultation.
METHODS: Thus, we conducted a retrospective study at Sainte-Anne Military Teaching Hospital (Toulon, France) over the period from January 1, 2021, to Decem

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Preoperative pediatric anxiety is characterized by stress, worry, nervosism and concern and may be expressed in different ways. Postoperative behavior changes, such as nocturnal enuresis, dietary problems, apathy, insomnia, nightmares and agitated sleep may be results of this anxiety. In some children, these changes persist for one year. This study aimed at evaluating anxiety-related aspects affecting children and parents in the preoperative period, as well as pharmacological or non-pharmacological interventions to minimize them.

The cardiorespiratory effects of thiamylal (10 mg/kg of body weight, IV) and the effects of preanesthetic medication with diazepam, acepromazine, detomidine, or xylazine administered prior to a thiamylal dosage of 6 mg/kg, IV, were evaluated in 6 adult horses. The quality of recovery from thiamylal anesthesia also was evaluated. Intravenous administration of thiamylal at a dosage of 10 mg/kg increased heart rate, systemic arterial, pulmonary artery, and central venous blood pressures, as well as cardiac output and arterial partial pressure of CO2 (PaCO2). BACKGROUND: Midazolam is routinely used as preanesthetic medication in pediatric patients. Recently, dexmedetomidine has emerged as an alternative as a premedicant. We aimed to add more evidence about the efficacy and safety of two common routes of administration for pediatric premedication: oral midazolam versus intranasal dexmedetomidine.
METHODS: We systematically searched Randomized Controlled Trials (RCTs) involving patients ≤ 18 years old undergoing preanesthetic medication and comparing intranasal dexmedetomidine with oral midazolam. Risk Ratio (RR) and Mean Difference (MD) with 95% Co

Pulmonary aspiration during anesthesia remains an uncommon but clinically significant perioperative complication associated with substantial morbidity and mortality. Although contemporary fasting guidelines recommend minimum fasting intervals to reduce aspiration risk, adherence does not guarantee an empty stomach, particularly in patients with delayed gastric emptying or those receiving medications that impair gastrointestinal motility, such as glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonist (GLP-1 RA)-based therapies. Preanesthetic gastric ultrasound has emerged as a practical point-of-care modalit

Recently, intranasal dexmedetomidine (DEX) has been reported to be effective as a preanesthetic medication, mostly in healthy pediatric patients. We attempted to administer intranasal DEX premedication in this case to an adult patient with intellectual disability who previously had difficulty tolerating premedication with oral midazolam. Using an intranasal atomization delivery device (MAD Nasal, Teleflex), we administered 1.5 µg/kg of DEX intranasally and were able to achieve adequate sedation, which facilitated a smooth mask induction of general anesthesia with sevoflurane. Ninety women undergoing gynecologic laparoscopy were randomly given clonidine 3 or 4.5 micrograms/kg or saline intramuscularly 45-60 min prior to induction of anesthesia. Anesthesia was induced with thiopental 3.5 mg/kg and maintained with 0.3% end-tidal isoflurane in nitrous oxide and oxygen. The laparoscopy did not begin sooner than 20 min after tracheal intubation. Arterial blood pressure and heart rate were monitored with an automatic oscillometer. When compared with the baseline values, clonidine 4.5 micrograms/kg significantly (P less than 0.001) decreased the mean arterial pressure (MAP
