Domestic violence, contraceptive use, and unwanted pregnancy in rural India.

This study examines the relationship between male-to-female physical domestic violence and unwanted pregnancy among women in three economically and culturally diverse areas of India. A central methodological focus of the study is the examination of retrospective and prospective measures of pregnancy unwantedness, contrasting their usefulness for specifying levels of unwanted pregnancy and its relationship with domestic violence. Data from India's 1998-99 National Family Health Survey and a 2002-03 follow-up survey for which women in four states were reinterviewed are analyzed, and the factors

Unwanted pregnancies are associated with preterm birth, but not low birth weight.

BACKGROUND: Prior studies indicate that unintended and unwanted pregnancies can be associated with poor obstetric outcomes. OBJECTIVE: This study examined whether an unintended or unwanted pregnancy was associated with a preterm delivery and with low birth weight. STUDY DESIGN: We conducted a secondary analysis of the 2017 to 2019 cycle of the National Survey of Family Growth, a nationally-representative population- based survey of reproductive-aged people identifying as female in the United States. The sample consisted of respondents who had at least one prior live birth. Respondents were a

The Effects of Gender-based Violence on Women's Unwanted Pregnancy and Abortion.

The aim of this research is to understand how gender-based violence across the life-course affects the likelihood of abortion. Women outpatients (n = 309) revealed their exposure to four different forms of gender-based abuse: child sexual abuse (25.7 percent), teenage physical dating violence (40.8 percent), intimate partner violence (43.1 percent), and sexual assault outside an intimate relationship (22 percent). Logistic regressions revealed that no single form of gender-based abuse predicted abortion. The cumulative effect of multiple forms of abuse did increase the odds of having an aborti

[Unwanted pregnancy: impact on health and society in Latin America and the Caribbean].

Engaging in sexuality and reproduction should always be something that is wanted and planned. Unfortunately, when that is not the case, one result can be unwanted pregnancy. Unwanted pregnancies have consequences for women, their families, and their countries. This document reviews the causes and results of unwanted pregnancy, emphasizing the impact that this problem has on Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC). Four reasons why unwanted pregnancy is a continuing problem in LAC are: 1) people's growing desire to have smaller families, 2) the unmet need for family planning, 3) the fact that con

The relationship of maternal attitude to pregnancy outcomes and obstetric complications. A cohort study of unwanted pregnancy.

The relationships of maternal attitude to pregnancy outcome and obstetric complications were investigated in a prospective study of a group of 8,000 gravidas, enrolled in the Child Health and Development Studies, who were members of the Kaiser Foundation Health Plan in the San Francisco East Bay Area. Interviews which were conducted early in pregnancy determined the mother's attitude through an open-ended question, "How do you feel about having a baby now?" The responses to this question were categorized as strongly favorable, ambivalent, or negative. Biomedical factors which were related to n

Unmet need, intention to use contraceptives and unwanted pregnancy in rural bangladesh.

CONTEXT: Unmet need for contraception has become a central concept in the family planning field and one of the most important indicators for program planning and evaluation. The measure has faced criticism, however, for not taking into account women's stated intention to use contraceptives. METHODS: Using longitudinal data on more than 2,500 rural Bangladeshi women in 128 villages, this study links women's contraceptive adoption and experience of unwanted pregnancy between 2006 and 2009 to their unmet need status and their stated intention to use contraceptives in 2006. RESULTS: Intention to

Missing opportunities for preventing unwanted pregnancy: a qualitative study of emergency contraception.

BACKGROUND AND METHODOLOGY: High levels of unplanned pregnancy among young people are a huge public health problem in South Africa. However, use of emergency contraception (EC) remains low. Studies suggest that providers constitute an important link to increasing access to EC use. The aim of the study was to provide greater insights into the attitudes of providers towards EC in order to better understand factors influencing uptake. The study drew upon 30 in-depth interviews with providers at private and public health facilities in Durban, South Africa. RESULTS: The results of the study highli

Safe abortion for HIV-positive women with unwanted pregnancy: a reproductive right.

About 2.5 million women who become pregnant each year worldwide are HIV-positive. UNAIDS recommends that HIV-positive women should be able to control their fertility and to prevent HIV transmission perinatally if they decide to have children. Yet a literature review on these matters found that termination of pregnancy for HIV-positive women receives very little attention. This paper describes the difficulties faced by HIV-positive women in obtaining safe, legal, affordable abortion services. It shows that voluntary HIV counselling and testing for women seeking induced abortions and post-aborti

Motivations for Abortion or Continuation of an Unwanted Pregnancy: A Scoping Review of the Global Literature.

CONTEXT: The aim of this scoping review was to provide an overview of recent studies in peer reviewed journals investigating self-reported motivations to have an abortion or to continue an unwanted pregnancy in different countries and settings, including both qualitative and quantitative results. METHODS: We searched for English language publications published between 2008 and 2023 indexed in four scientific databases. We included studies if they captured people's own motivations for abortion and/ or for continuing an unwanted pregnancy. RESULTS: Of the included 19 studies, all focused on ab

Social issues around advanced unwanted pregnancies in rural single women.

This study covers issues on advanced unwanted pregnancies in rural single women in South-east Asia, with reference to age, education, occupation, person responsible (i.e. baby's father) and reasons for delay in seeking assistance. It describes single women with pregnancy beyond the time for abortion, as set by the Indian abortion law. The study involved 314 girls/women and was set in the Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences, Sevagram, India. The girls/women were admitted, provided with free facilities and had their babies looked after by hospital staff until given up for adoption, or o

Unwanted pregnancies: understanding contraceptive use and benefits in adolescents and older women.

The highest percentages of unintended pregnancies and the largest increases in births reported in the United States in recent years were in adolescents and in women more than 35 years of age. Increasing numbers of these women will require contraception to avoid unintended pregnancy. In adolescents the combined oral contraceptive agents protect fertility indirectly and exert favorable actions on menstrual dysfunction and certain hormone-related disorders such as acne and hirsutism. To avoid sexually transmitted disease, barrier protection should be used along with oral contraceptives until mutu

Psychosocial determinants of mistimed and unwanted pregnancy: the Hamamatsu Birth Cohort (HBC) study.

The terms mistimed pregnancy (MP) and unwanted pregnancy (UWP) refer to a woman's intentions regarding childbearing. Determinants for each type of pregnancy have not been well understood. The present study aims to investigate whether MP and UWP have different sets of psychosocial determinants compared to intended pregnancy, with a particular emphasis on any difference in the history of maternal psychiatric diagnosis. Using an ongoing birth cohort study, we consecutively enrolled parturients who were at mid-pregnancy (n = 780) and were expected to give birth at either of our two research sites.

The association of unwanted pregnancy and social support with depressive symptoms in pregnancy: evidence from rural Southwestern Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Depression in pregnancy has adverse health outcomes for mothers and children. The magnitude and risk factors of maternal depression during pregnancy is less known in developing countries. This study examines the association between pregnancy intention, social support and depressive symptoms in pregnancy in Ethiopia. METHODS: Data for this study comes from a baseline survey conducted as part of a community- based cohort study that involved 627 pregnant women from a Demographic Surveillance Site (DSS) in Southwestern Ethiopia. The Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) was used
