The beta-subunit of human chorionic gonadotrophin (hCG) and pregnancy-specific beta 1-glycoprotein (SP1) were measured simultaneously by specific radioimmunoassays in 473 serum samples from 43 patients with trophoblastic tumors. Both SP1 and hCG values were high in 16 untreated patients. 27 patients had been treated previously elsewhere, and their further treatment and monitoring were started simultaneously in our institute. The clearance pattern of maternal serum pregnancy specific beta 1-glycoprotein (SP1) was studied in 16 cases of tubal pregnancy (9 active and 7 regressed) after 12, 24, 48, 72, 96, 120 and 192 h following surgery. The mean values of the hormone in both groups showed a statistically highly significant difference in all measurements before and after treatment (P less than 0.001), but they followed the same exponential regression pattern. The half-life of SP1 in active tubal pregnancies after salpingectomy was 36.2 h and in regressed tubal pregnancies after salpingostomy was 37.5 h.

The predictive value of HPL, SP1 and AFP in serum were determined in 109 women admitted to hospital because of vaginal bleeding in the 6th to 19th gestational week. The prediction of abortion based on the initial analysis from the day of admission was found to be 91.7%, 75.9% and 81.8% for HPL, SP1 and AFP, respectively. The circulating levels of placental protein 5 (PP5), placental lactogen (hPL) and pregnancy-specific beta 1-glycoprotein (SP1) were measured in 254 women at the 16th week of pregnancy and the levels were correlated to fetal outcome in late pregnancy. A significant association was shown between high PP5 levels and premature delivery, and low SP1 levels and intrauterine growth retardation. Measurement of placental proteins in the first half of pregnancy may be a valuable clinical index of fetal outcome in late pregnancy.

Forty-two women using intrauterine contraceptive devices volunteered in a study in which blood samples were drawn in late luteal phase 1-3 times during 73 menstrual cycles. In all 129 blood samples were collected. Pregnancy-specific beta 1-glycoprotein (SP1) and human chorionic gonadotropin (beta-hC) were measured by radioimmunoassays. No diagnostic measures exist for the fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS). Therefore, maternal serum alpha-fetoprotein (AFP), human placental lactogen (HPL) and pregnancy specific beta-1-glycoprotein (SP 1) were followed in 35 pregnant problem drinkers and 14 abstinent control women throughout pregnancy.
