Echocardiographic Assessment of the Left Ventricle in Young Prehypertensive Nigerians.

BACKGROUND: Prehypertension is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. This risk could partly be explained by the early compromise in left ventricular (LV) structure and function. This study investigated the LV geometry and function in young black prehypertensive subjects. METHODS AND RESULTS: This cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted at the Usmanu Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital, Sokoto, Nigeria. Echocardiography-derived LV geometry and function were assessed using standardized methods. Prehypertensive subjects had higher mean systolic b

Prevalence and Risks Factors of Prehypertension in Africa: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Hypertension is one of the major factors for high mortality of adults in Africa. However, complications occur at lower values than those previously classified as hypertension. Thus, prehypertension is considered as a new category of hypertension and a major risk factor for developing clinical hypertension relative to those with normotension, it has been linked with increased future risk of hypertension as well as cardiovascular diseases. OBJECTIVES: The objective of this review was to determine prevalence of prehypertension and describe the associated factors of prehypertension in

Polycystic ovary syndrome as a paradigm for prehypertension, prediabetes, and preobesity.

The polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a hyperandrogenic disorder affecting 5-10 % of premenopausal women. These patients gather multiple cardiovascular risk factors from early ages. Hence, PCOS is currently considered a paradigm of cardiometabolic disease. Research about its pathogenesis has grown over the last years, covering from the potential fetal developmental programming to the molecular basis of adipose tissue dysfunction, insulin resistance, inflammation, oxidative stress, sympathetic hyperactivity, and endothelial dysfunction. All these abnormalities put these patients at an increas

Association of sympathovagal imbalance with cardiovascular risks in young prehypertensives.

Although cardiovascular (CV) risks have been reported in prehypertension, their link to sympathovagal imbalance (SVI) has not been investigated. In the present study, we have assessed the factors contributing to SVI and the prediction of CV risk by SVI in prehypertensives. Body mass index, CV parameters such as heart rate, systolic blood pressure (BP), diastolic BP, mean arterial pressure, rate-pressure product (RPP), stroke volume, left ventricular ejection time, cardiac output, total peripheral resistance, baroreflex sensitivity recorded by continuous blood pressure variability monitoring us

Body mass index contributes to sympathovagal imbalance in prehypertensives.

BACKGROUND: The present study was conducted to assess the nature of sympathovagal imbalance (SVI) in prehypertensives by short-term analysis of heart rate variability (HRV) to understand the alteration in autonomic modulation and the contribution of BMI to SVI in the genesis of prehypertension. METHODS: Body mass index (BMI), basal heart rate (BHR), blood pressure (BP), rate pressure product (RPP) and HRV indices such as total power (TP), low-frequency power (LF), normalized LF (LFnu), high-frequency power (HF), normalized HF (HFnu), LF-HF ratio, mean heart rate (mean RR), square root of the

High prevalence of prehypertension and hypertension in a working population in Hungary.

BACKGROUND: Hungary has one of the highest mortality rates due to strokes among the European Union countries. As elevated blood pressure (BP) is the principal risk factor for strokes, we assessed BP levels, as well as awareness and treatment status of hypertension and prehypertension in a working population sample in Hungary. METHODS: Worksite employees in Budapest and Szeged were screened for their BP using an automated BP measuring instrument (BpTRU). BpTRU readings of heart rate (HR) were also recorded. Respondents were classified as normotensives (NT), prehypertensives (PHTN) and hyperten

Depletion of Blautia wexlerae and Parabacteroides distasonis in adiposity-related prehypertension.

BACKGROUND: Prehypertension is more likely to develop into hypertension in individuals with adiposity. We aimed to explore how adiposity influences prehypertension through gut microbiota. METHODS: Kaplan-Meier and Cox proportional hazard regression models were employed to evaluate the association between prehypertension and adiposity in 649 individuals. Among them, 197 consented to provide fecal samples and were divided, along with 184 additional participants, into healthy controls (HC), individuals with adiposity and normal tension (Ad-NT), and those with prehypertension (Ad-pHT) based on bo

Walking Workstation Use Reduces Ambulatory Blood Pressure in Adults With Prehypertension.

BACKGROUND: The acute effect of low-intensity walking on blood pressure (BP) is unclear. PURPOSE: To determine if the acute use of a walking workstation reduces ambulatory blood pressure (ABP) in prehypertensive men and women. METHODS: Ten prehypertensive adults participated in a randomized, cross-over study that included a control workday and a walking workstation workday. ABP was measured for 7 hour during the workday and for 6 hour after work. RESULTS: Both systolic BP (SBP) (134 ± 14 vs. 137 ± 16 mmHg; P = .027) and diastolic BP (DBP) (79 ± 10 vs. 82 ± 12 mmHg; P = .001) were lower on t

Treating hypertension and prehypertension in older people: when, whom and how.

Prehypertension should be treated with lifestyle measures and not with antihypertensive drug therapy in older adults. Lifestyle measures should be encouraged both to retard development of hypertension and as adjunctive therapy in those with hypertension. A meta-analysis of 11 randomized controlled trials of 40,325 older persons showed that antihypertensive drug therapy significantly reduced all-cause mortality 13% (7-19%), cardiovascular death 18% (7-27%), cardiovascular events 21% (13-27%), stroke 30% (23-37%), and fatal stroke by 33% (9-50%) (Ostrowski et al., 2014 [32]). Association between serum gamma-glutamyltransferase level and prehypertension among US adults.

BACKGROUND: Higher serum gamma-glutamyltransferase (GGT) levels, a marker of oxidative stress, are implicated in the development and progression of hypertension; however, data from non-Caucasian ethnicities are limited. Also, currently there is little data available on the association between serum GGT level and clinically relevant blood pressure (BP) categories earlier in the disease continuum, when hypertension prevention efforts may be applicable. The association between serum GGT and prehypertension was examined in a nationally representative sample of US adults. METHODS AND RESULTS: Cros

How feasible is self-monitoring for the management of prehypertension? The REVERSE study.

BACKGROUND: Prehypertension (blood pressure (BP) 120-139/80-89 mmHg) affects 40% of UK adults increasing cardiovascular risk. While BP self-monitoring is effective in hypertension, its feasibility in prehypertension is unclear. Concerns include lack of interest, medicalisation, and unintended consequences, despite evidence suggesting it may empower individuals in risk management and prevention. AIM: To determine the feasibility of BP self-monitoring for prehypertension. METHOD: A prospective, non-randomised, mixed-methods, feasibility study across primary care in Lancashire and South Cumbria

Associations of maternal and foetoplacental factors with prehypertension/hypertension in early childhood.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether characterization of maternal and foetoplacental factors beyond birthweight can enable early identification of children at risk of developing prehypertension/hypertension. METHODS: We recruited 693 mother-offspring dyads from the GUSTO prospective mother-offspring cohort. Prehypertension/hypertension at age 6 years was identified using the simplified paediatric threshold of 110/70 mmHg. We evaluated the associations of pregnancy complications (gestational diabetes, excessive/inadequate gestational weight gain, hypertensive disorders of pregnancy), foetal growth d

Cardiovascular dysfunctions and sympathovagal imbalance in hypertension and prehypertension: physiological perspectives.

Hypertension (HTN) and prehypertension (pre-HTN) have been identified as independent risk factors for adverse cardiovascular events. Recently, increased psychosocial stress and work stress have contributed to the increased prevalence of HTN and pre-HTN, in addition to the contribution of obesity, diabetes, poor food habits and physical inactivity. Irrespective of the etiology, sympathetic overactivity has been recognized as the main pathophysiologic mechanism in the genesis of HTN and pre-HTN. Sympathovagal imbalance owing to sympathetic overactivity and vagal withdrawal is reported to be the

Patterns and predictors of prehypertension among "Работает'' urban adults in India.

Cardiovascular disease is still on the increase in India owing to changing socioeconomic factors and unhealthy lifestyles. Better understanding of the role of hypertension (HTN) has led to new Joint National Committee (JNC-7) guidelines for its diagnosis and management. The authors aimed to evaluate the predictors and correlates of prehypertension (PreHTN) among adults in urban India. Study design is a cross-sectional survey among 2,007 adults in Chennai in July 2003; 1,505 men and 502 women over the age of 18 years were studied. Demographic data collected by direct interview were the followin

Trends in Prehypertension and Hypertension Risk Factors in US Adults: 1999-2012.

Prehypertension is associated with increased risk for hypertension and cardiovascular disease. Data are limited on the temporal changes in the prevalence of prehypertension and risk factors for hypertension and cardiovascular disease among US adults with prehypertension. We analyzed data from 30 958 US adults ≥20 years of age who participated in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys between 1999 and 2012. Using the mean of 3 blood pressure (BP) measurements from a study examination, prehypertension was defined as systolic BP of 120 to 139 mm Hg and diastolic BP <90 mm Hg or dia

Explaining socioeconomic inequalities in childhood blood pressure and prehypertension: the ABCD study.

Much remains to be understood about the socioeconomic inequalities in hypertension that continue to exist. We investigated the association of socioeconomic status with blood pressure and prehypertension in childhood. In a prospective cohort, 3024 five- to six-year-old children had blood pressure measurements and available information on potential explanatory factors, namely birth weight, gestational age, smoking during pregnancy, pregnancy-induced hypertension, familial hypertension, maternal body mass index, breastfeeding duration, domestic tobacco exposure, and body mass index.
