[Prenatal diagnosis of triploidy].

Triploidy is one of the most common chromosomal numerical aberrations, resulting usually from one out off two main mechanisms: aberrant segregation of chromosomes during meiosis or from the fertilization of one egg by two sperms. Triploidy usually causes prenatal death. In present paper the methods of non-invasive and invasive prenatal diagnosis of triploidy are described. We also report the case of triploid fetus, diagnosed by ultrasound visualisation followed by amniocenthesis and cytogenetic analysis.

Prenatal diagnosis of achondroplasia.

A 25 years old lady came to Centre for Nuclear Medicine and Ultrasound, Mymensingh for ultrasonographic evaluation of gestational condition. Transabdominal ultrasonogram showed mal development of skeletal system with abnormally shortened limbs. This seems to be a case of achnodroplasia, which was proved subsequently true after termination of pregnancy.

Prenatal diagnosis in Belgium.

Prenatal diagnoses (PND) in Belgium are performed exclusively in licensed centres of medical genetics linked to university hospitals. These centres of genetics provide comprehensive genetic services which include, in addition to genetic tests, genetic counselling and moral support. These services are accessible to all residents in Belgium through coverage by the social security. PND has become a widely accepted procedure by the public and the health professionals, and has achieved significant prevention of birth defects, mainly chromosome abnormalities. The main problems involved in PND in Bel

Prenatal diagnosis in Denmark.

Prenatal diagnosis (PND) in Denmark is covered by 5 genetic departments. More than 10% of all pregnancies are monitored by amniocentesis (AC) or chorionic villus sampling (CVS). Prenatal cytogenetic analyses are recorded in the Danish Central Cytogenetic Register (DCCR), which provides information on individual cases for genetic counselling and allows the Health Authorities to monitor prenatal diagnosis (PND). About 40% of trisomy 21 is diagnosed prenatally. The present procedures are AC, CVS, chordocentesis, and ultrasound scan. The methods include a wide range of cytogenetic, molecular, and …

Prenatal diagnosis in Germany.

Prenatal diagnosis (PND) in Germany is well established. A wide spectrum of sonographic, cytogenetic, molecular and biochemical investigations can be chosen by pregnant women. While sonographic examinations are offered to all pregnant women, the methods requiring invasive procedures are performed predominantly when there is a higher risk than in the general population. However, PND is also performed on request by the mother in the absence of an increased risk. Pretest genetic counselling is recommended before invasive techniques. PND is performed in public as well as in private settings. Guide…

Prenatal diagnosis of exencephaly.

This paper presents a sonographic diagnosis of exencephaly made during the last trimester of gestation. The sonogram showed the absence of bones in the cranial vault together with the presence of a disorganized cerebral mass, with loss of its normal anatomy. Post-partum examination of the newborn confirmed the findings of the sonogram. We briefly review the characteristics of exencephaly, its aetiology, and its relationship to anencephaly.

[Prenatal diagnosis of triploidy].

In two pregnant women the diagnosis fetal triploidy was made by transabdominal villous biopsy at 20 and 21 weeks. Chromosomal analysis revealed a 69, XXX respectively 69, XXY karyotype. The diagnosis was suspected because of fetal growth retardation and a large vesicular placenta on sonographic examination. One patient had bilateral multilocular ovarian cysts. She had an eclamptic seizure at 22 weeks. In both patients labour was induced by intravenous prostaglandins. One fetus had a small spina bifida, the other fetus had no congenital malformations. Microscopy of both placentas showed a parti

Prenatal diagnosis and screening.

We have limited the scope of this article to those disorders that have already been successfully diagnosed or excluded in utero. We currently have the potential to diagnose a number of others for which the opportunity has not yet arisen. If a biochemical, morphologic, chromosomal, or DNA alteration is known for a specific condition and is likely to be expressed in one of the fetal tissues or secretions, attempt at prenatal diagnosis is reasonable. Our ability to detect the inherited disorders of the skin in utero will continue to improve both in the number of specific disorders successfully di…

Prenatal diagnosis by amniocentesis.

One of the major applications of somatic cell genetics to clinical medicine is in the area of prenatal diagnosis by genetic amniocentesis, which permits the accurate prediction of fetal disease and allows pregnant women to selectively maintain unaffected fetuses. The more recent developments in recombinant DNA research promise to expand tremendously the potential of this technique.

Prenatal diagnosis of hypochondroplasia.

Prenatal diagnosis of a fetus at risk for hypochondroplasia, a short limb dwarfism condition similar to achondroplasia, was performed by ultrasound at 22 weeks' gestation. The limb bones were measured and shown to be decreased in length. The pregnancy was terminated. Post abortion X-ray did not show caudal narrowing in the lumbar spine but the pelvis had the features of hypochondroplasia.

[Prenatal diagnosis of hemoglobinopathies].

Fetal red blood cells are necessary for the antenatal diagnosis of hemoglobinopathies. Fetal blood may be obtained in utero, by amniocentesis or fetoscopy, from the 17th to the 20th week of pregnancy. At this time, biochemical techniques may detect bêta-thalassemia major (fetal synthesis of hemoglobin btaA chain totally absent or less than 2% and sickle cell disease (fetal synthesis of btaS chain, without any production of bêtaA chain). When fetal blood has been severely contaminated by maternal blood, purification techniques allow enrichment of the sample in fetal red blood cells by the elimi

Genetics in prenatal diagnosis.

The options for prenatal genetic testing have evolved rapidly in the past decade, and advances in sequencing technology now allow genetic diagnoses to be made down to the single-base-pair level, even before the birth of the child. This offers women the opportunity to obtain information regarding the foetus, thereby empowering them to make informed decisions about their pregnancy. As genetic testing becomes increasingly available to women, clinician knowledge and awareness of the options available to women is of great importance. Additionally, comprehensive pretest and posttest genetic counsell
