Prescription opioid misuse and mental health among young injection drug users.

BACKGROUND: Prescription opioid (PO) misuse is a significant concern in the United States. OBJECTIVES: This study describes the prevalence and timing of PO misuse, diagnoses of opiate abuse and dependence, and their associations with psychiatric disorders in a sample of young people who inject drugs (PWID). METHODS: Participants were 570 young (18-25 years) PWID, primarily heroin users, recruited through outreach and respondent-driven sampling. Trained interviewers administered a semi-structured psychiatric interview. Diagnoses of substance use and mental disorders were based on DSM-IV diagn

Prevalence and correlates of 12-month prescription drug misuse in Alberta.

OBJECTIVE: We examined the prevalence and correlates of prescription drug misuse (PDM) in a population-based sample of adults from Alberta. METHODS: Data were collected from 3511 adults in Alberta aged 18 years and older in 2002 using a computer-aided telephone survey; the survey response rate was 57.4%. RESULTS: The prevalence of 12-month PDM in Alberta was 8.2% in 2002. Opiates were the most frequently misused drug class, followed by sedatives, stimulants, and tranquilizers. Current disability was particularly associated with PDM. Odds of PDM were also elevated among adult students and adu

Cost-effective interventions to prevent prescription drug misuse: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Prescription drug misuse (PDM), which involves the overprescription or inappropriate use of medications such as opioids, benzodiazepines, and stimulants, is one of the primary drivers of the opioid crisis. Identifying and understanding the most cost-effective interventions for preventing PDM is crucial. OBJECTIVES: To conduct a systematic review to identify and synthesize recent cost-effectiveness studies of interventions to prevent PDM. SEARCH METHODS: We searched MEDLINE, EMBASE, Scopus, PsycINFO, EconLit, and Tufts CEA Registry from January 2019 until June 2024 to identify cos

Trends in the Source of Prescription Drugs for Misuse between 2015 and 2019.

Background: Opioid and benzodiazepine-related deaths have been at all-time highs despite numerous changes to guidelines for prescribing these substances. Although prescribing guidelines appear to have resulted in fewer prescriptions from doctors, no recent study has looked at changes to where prescription drugs of misuse are obtained. Objectives: The purpose of this study was to examine trends in the source of prescription drug misuse between 2015 and 2019. Methods: Data were from the 2015 - 2019 National Survey on Drug Use and Health. Trend analysis was performed using logistic regression mod

Anabolic steroid users' misuse of non-traditional prescription drugs.

BACKGROUND: Few anabolic-androgenic steroid (AAS) users disclose their performance enhancing drug (PED) use with their healthcare providers. AAS users practice polypharmacy with prescription medications to counter adverse effects of AAS, to further their muscular gains, or to lose weight. OBJECTIVES: To compare and contrast AAS using and non-AAS using gym clients regarding PED use, in particular prescription drugs. METHODS: The CASTRO (Castro Anabolic Steroid Research Observation) study was a 108-item cross-sectional survey that took place at four gyms in San Francisco, California between Au

Association between prescription drug misuse and injection among runaway and homeless youth.

BACKGROUND: The nonmedical use of prescription drugs is the fastest growing drug problem in the United States, disproportionately impacting youth. Furthermore, the population prevalence of injection drug use among youth is also on the rise. This short communication examines the association between current prescription drug misuse (PDM) and injection among runaway and homeless youth. METHODS: Homeless youth were surveyed between October 2011 and February 2012 at two drop-in service agencies in Los Angeles, CA. Prevalence ratios (PR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) for the association between

Differences in Prescription Drug Misuse Among U.S. Adults With and Without Disabilities.

INTRODUCTION: Increasing evidence suggests that adults with disabilities have higher rates of drug misuse than adults without disabilities; however, there is limited information on rates of commonly misused prescription drugs (e.g., stimulants, opioids, tranquilizers) to quantify the magnitude of this disparity. Thus, the purpose of this cross-sectional study is to examine and compare the prevalence rates of prescription drug misuse by disability status and age group in a national sample of U.S. adults. METHODS: Data (n=47,100 adults) from the 2021 National Survey on Drug Use and Health were

Illicit and prescription drug misuse as reported to the Maine Diversion Alert Program.

BACKGROUND: The opioid epidemic is rapidly evolving and new tools are needed to combat drug abuse. The Maine Diversion Alert Program (DAP) is an informational resource that facilitates communication about drug arrests between the criminal justice and healthcare fields. The objectives of this report were to: (1) describe the illegal and prescription pharmaceuticals reported to the DAP; (2) determine if the drugs implicated in arrests changed from the first to latter half of 2016; (3) identify the demographic and other characteristics of arrestees; and (4) outline the strengths and limitations o

Prescription drug use and misuse in a cohort of people who inject drugs (PWID) in Baltimore.

BACKGROUND: Prescription drug misuse and its consequences (e.g., overdose) are a major public health concern. While national focus has been on opioids, misuse of sedatives/tranquilizers also occurs. Here we describe the use, correlates, and sources of prescription drugs in a community-based cohort of people who inject drugs (PWID). METHODS: We included participants of the AIDS Linked to the IntraVenous Experience (ALIVE) study in follow-up in 2014. We defined prescription drug use as use of opioids or sedatives/tranquilizers considering both medical "prescribed by a doctor" and non-medical so

Misuse of Prescription and Illicit Drugs in Middle Adulthood in the Context of the Opioid Epidemic.

Background: The United States' opioid epidemic continues to escalate overdose deaths. Understanding its extent is complicated by concurrent misuse of other prescription or illicit drugs, increasing risk for overdose. Current surveillance using electronic medical records and police data has limitations and frequently fails to distinguish middle-aged adults from other age groups in reporting. Objectives: The purpose of this analysis is to (1) describe characteristics of middle-aged US adults who report misusing prescription and illicit drugs and (2) evaluate if misusing prescription opioids incr

Pathways from Childhood Adversity to Prescription Drug Misuse Among Young Adult African Immigrants.

PURPOSE: African immigrants remain underrepresented in research on adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and substance misuse. This study examined the relationship between ACEs and non-medical prescription drug use (NMPDU) among young adult African immigrants in the United States and explored whether mental health distress, perceived discrimination, and self-esteem mediated this relationship. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data were drawn from a cross-sectional survey of 599 African immigrants in the United States; analyses focused on a subsample of 297 young adults ages 18-25. Ordinary least squares

Contextualizing prescription opioid misuse and heroin use within dimensional models of drug involvement.

BACKGROUND: Prescription opioid misuse (POM) is often implicated in heroin initiation, despite evidence that POM does not predict heroin initiation any better than other drug use. Additionally, prescription misuse and illicit use behaviors tend to respectively "cluster" together. This study aimed to test a series of theory-driven factor models to explore how POM and heroin use are situated within the broader constellation of drug use that typically occurs alongside opioid (mis)use. METHODS: 36,309 individuals from NESARC-III (56.31% female; mean age=45.63 [SD=17.53]) reported their lifetime (

Alcohol, Prescription Drug Misuse, Sexual Violence, and Dating Violence Among High School Youth.

PURPOSE: Sexual violence (SV), teen dating violence (TDV), and substance use are significant public health concerns among U.S. adolescents. This study examined whether latent classes of baseline alcohol and prescription drug misuse longitudinally predict SV and TDV victimization and perpetration (i.e., verbal, relational, physical/threatening, and sexual) 1 year later. METHODS: Students from six Midwestern high schools (n = 1,875; grades 9-11) completed surveys across two consecutive spring semesters. Latent class analysis was used to identify classes of individuals according to four substance

Family history of substance problems among African Americans: Associations with drug use, drug use disorder, and prescription drug misuse.

A family history of substance problems is a well-known risk factor for substance use and use disorders; however, much of this research has been conducted in studies with predominantly White subjects. The aim of this study was to examine the associations between family history density of substance problems and drug use, risk for drug use disorder, and prescription drug misuse in a sample of African American adults. Results indicate that family history density of substance problems increased the risk for all drug outcomes in the full sample. However, when subgroup analyses by gender were conduct
