Governments utilize special policy measures to increase and maintain positive attitudes among their citizens towards consent registration and organ donation. Little has been published on these national strategies. Some studies report on the impact of single policy measures shortly after their implementation, whereas the assessment of the impact of a national strategy on organ donation over a long period of time has been lacking. The aim of this study is to assess the impact of the Dutch donor education strategy (1998-2008) on the availability of donor organs, by trying to disentangle the impac

INTRODUCTION: Recently, law No. 10 of February 10, 2020, entitled "Rules regarding the disposition of one's body and post-mortem tissues for study, training, and scientific research purposes" was introduced in Italy. Although its provisions respond to a constructive subject, some practical issues are evident in the approved text.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A systematic review of the literature was performed by searching online medical and juridical databases to identify publications and Italian law provisions related to body donation programs.
RESULTS: The updated regulatory framework was outlin

Anatomists are regarded as custodians of cadaveric material donated to science. Almost every facet of medical science has experienced explosive advances. This has impacted directly on anatomists and their role. Increasingly, anatomists are raising concerns with regard to the treatment of human tissue (Jones,2002, Clin. Anat. 15:436-440). The Korperwelten (Bodyworlds) of Gunther von Hagens et al. (1987, Anat. Embryol. 175:411-421) has evoked considerable debate about the treatment of human cadavers. Thus far clinical anatomists have had little role to play in policy formulation, legislation, an

Studies comparing opt-out and opt-in approaches to organ donation have generally suggested higher donation and transplantation rates in countries with an opt-out strategy. We compared organ donation and transplantation rates between countries with opt-out versus opt-in systems to investigate possible differences in the contemporary era. Data were analysed for 35 countries registered with the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (17 countries classified as opt-out, 18 classified as opt-in) and obtained organ donation and transplantation rates for 2016 from the Global Observato

The current voluntary posthumous organ donation policy fails to provide sufficient organs to meet the demand. In these circumstances xenografts have been regarded as an expedient solution. The public perception seems to be that the only impediments to this technology are technical and biological. There are, however, important ethical issues raised by xenotransplantation that need to be considered as a matter of urgency. When the ethical issues raised by using non-human animals to provide replacement organs for human beings are considered in a wider context and the possible alternatives to xeno

A chief objection to opt-out organ donor registration policies is that they do not secure people's actual consent to donation, and so fail to respect their autonomy rights to decide what happens to their organs after they die. However, scholars have recently offered two powerful responses to this objection. First, Michael B Gill argues that opt-out policies do not fail to respect people's autonomy simply because they do not secure people's actual consent to donation. Second, Ben Saunders argues that opt-out policies do secure people's actual-if not explicit-consent, provided that certain condi

The period 1961-76 was one of marked contestation in Britain about how organs should be obtained from recently deceased people's bodies to transplant into ailing strangers. Most were being removed from hospital patients' corpses without these people's prior consent, under a law that enabled hospital authorities to so authorize the use of a body with one caveat: enquiries should first be made to learn whether the dead person had in life objected to this or whether a family member did. Transplant surgeons argued that this requirement severely hampered their enterprise. They pushed for the 1961 H

One of the most significant advances in medicine during the last 50 years is the development of organ transplantation. In the context of chronic kidney diseases, renal transplantation offers patients a better clinical outcome than other treatment options. However, the benefits of organ transplantation have not been maximized due to an inadequate supply of organs for transplantation. Despite the establishment of elaborate legal rules for organs procurement, both on deceased and living donors in numerous countries, ethical concerns remain. Most of them are consequences of the strategies implemen

Clinical organ transplantation has been recognized as one of the most gripping medical advances of the century as it provides a way of giving the gift of life to patients with terminal failure of vital organs, which requires the participation of other fellow human beings and of society by donating organs from deceased or living individuals. The increasing incidence of vital organ failure and the inadequate supply of organs, especially from cadavers, has created a wide gap between organ supply and organ demand, which has resulted in very long waiting times to receive an organ as well as an incr

It is often claimed that a legitimate approach to organ donation is an opt-out system, also known as 'presumed consent', 'deemed consent', or 'deemed authorisation', whereby individuals are presumed or deemed willing to donate at least some of their organs and tissues after death unless they have explicitly refused permission. While sharing a default in favour of donation, such systems differ in several key respects, such as the role and importance assigned to the family members of prospective donors and their preferences, and exclusions and safeguards which often specify the demographic group

Every country needs to increase the number of deceased organ donors and the potential impact of a change to opting-out legislation remains unproven, despite the apparent association between opting out and higher donor rates. However, the Spanish model--so successful in Spain and many other countries--is not based on a requirement for opting out, and, in the UK, deceased organ donation has increased by 25% in 3 years through implementation of a series of recommendations that have transformed the infrastructure of donation. A major review of opting out concluded that it is not appropriate for th

OBJECTIVE: New Zealand's organ donation rates are among the lowest in the OECD. In a bid to increase organ availability, the New Zealand Human Tissue Act 2008 introduces new consent arrangements for deceased donor organ procurement. This article assesses these new arrangements and presents the case for further reform.
APPROACH: Our assessment and arguments are based on philosophical analysis informed by empirical data on the effectiveness of alternative consent systems. We: 1) Identify widely held ethical judgments about policies and practices relevant to organ donation (e.g. those relating t

The organ shortage is commonly presented as having a clear solution, increase the number of organs donated and the problem will be solved. In the light of the Northern Ireland Assembly's consultation on moving to an opt-out organ donor register this article focuses on the social factors and complexities which impact strongly on both the supply of, and demand for, transplantable organs. Judging by the experience of other countries presumed consent systems may or may not increase donations but have not met demand. Donation rates have risen considerably in all parts of the UK recently but there i

Organ transplantation, the gold standard therapy for end-stage organ failures, has become a victim of its success. Indeed, the number of patients listed for transplantation has been increasing faster than that of available grafts. The number of brain-dead donors, the primary source of organ donation in France, is limited, but this figure is becoming more and more comprehensive, thanks to the work carried out by hospital transplant coordination units. The room for manoeuvre is limited: to increase the transplantation rate in this respect, the only possibility would be to reduce the rate of dona

Chronic organ diseases and the increasing demand for organ transplantation have become an important health care problem within the last few decades. Campaigns and regulations to encourage people to donate organs after death have not met with much success. This article discusses the subject from an Islamic perspective. It beings with some basic information on how Muslims reach legal rulings on a particular issue, and goes on to debate contemporary thinking among Islamic scholars on the ethical-legal issues of organ donation and organ transplantation. It is shown that there are two groups of sch

BACKGROUND: Obtaining informed consent in acute trauma patients is often impossible, forcing investigators to abandon important projects. To better understand the likelihood of -- and barriers to -- informed consent in trauma patients, we evaluated when and how consent is possible in acutely injured patients.
STUDY DESIGN: Over a 7-month period, at a large, urban, adult Level I trauma center, we prospectively assessed each patient's ability to give hypothetical informed consent. Patients were considered consentable when they were alert, unintoxicated, and stable, with no prohibitive language

This paper develops a theoretical model to show how changes in the default system of organ donor registration, along with a Priority Rule, affect society's cadaveric organ donation rate. The developed model is on the lines of Kessler and Roth (2012) and seeks to inspect the hypotheses put forward by Li et al (2013), solely based on their laboratory experiment. The model shows that some of these results can change under specific assumptions regarding the population of potential donors. Among the hypotheses examined in this paper, special emphasis has been given to hypothesis 4, which evaluates
