Subdivisions of chick diencephalic roof plate: implication in the formation of the posterior commissure.

The subcommissural organ (SCO) is a roof plate differentiation located in the caudal diencephalon under the posterior commissure (PC). A role for SCO and its secretory product, SCO-spondin, in the formation of the PC has been proposed. Here, we provide immunohistochemical evidence to suggest that SCO is anatomically divided in a bilateral region positive for SCO-spondin that surrounds a negative medial region. Remarkably, axons contacting the lateral region are highly fasciculated, in sharp contrast with the defasciculated axons of the medial region. In addition, lateral axon fascicles run tow

Case Studies in Neuroscience: Instability of the visual near triad in traumatic brain injury-evidence for a putative convergence integrator.

Deficits of convergence and accommodation are common following traumatic brain injury, including mild traumatic brain injury, although the mechanism and localization of these deficits have been unclear and supranuclear control of the near-vision response has been incompletely understood. We describe a patient who developed profound instability of the near-vision response with inability to maintain convergence and accommodation following mild traumatic brain injury, who was identified to have a structural lesion on brain MRI in the pulvinar of the caudal thalamus, the pretectum, and the rostral

Distribution of choline acetyltransferase (ChAT) immunoreactivity in the brain of the adult trout and tract-tracing observations on the connections of the nuclei of the isthmus.

The distribution of cholinergic neurons and fibers was studied in the brain and rostral spinal cord of the brown trout and rainbow trout by using an antiserum against the enzyme choline acetyltransferase (ChAT). Cholinergic neurons were observed in the ventral telencephalon, preoptic region, habenula, thalamus, hypothalamus, magnocellular superficial pretectal nucleus, optic tectum, isthmus, cranial nerve motor nuclei, and spinal cord. In addition, new cholinergic groups were detected in the vascular organ of the lamina terminalis, the parvocellular and magnocellular parts of the preoptic nucl

Brisk and sluggish concentrically organized ganglion cells in the cat's retina.

1. Nine hundred and sixty cat retinal ganglion cells were evaluated with respect to receptive-field organization and latency to antidromic activation of their axons from optic-tract and mid-brain positions.2. The vast majority (92%) had the familiar concentric centre/surround organization. As in earlier work these could be classed as sustained or transient, independently of the centre type. About 13% of the concentric cells were characterized by relatively sluggish responses to conventional visual stimuli which yielded brisk responses from the others. The sluggish cells constituted a previousl

Impaired Direction Selectivity in the Nucleus of the Optic Tract of Albino Mice.

PURPOSE: Human albinos have a low visual acuity. This is partially due to the presence of spontaneous erroneous eye movements called pendular nystagmus. This nystagmus is present in other albino vertebrates and has been hypothesized to be caused by aberrant wiring of retinal ganglion axons to the nucleus of the optic tract (NOT), a part of the accessory optic system involved in the optokinetic response to visual motion. The NOT in pigmented rodents is preferentially responsive to ipsiversive motion (i.e., motion in the contralateral visual field in the temporonasal direction). We compared the

Retinorecipient areas in the diurnal murine rodent Arvicanthis niloticus: A disproportionally large superior colliculus.

The Nile grass rat (Arvicanthis niloticus) has a high proportion of cone photoreceptors (∼30-40%) compared with that in the common laboratory mouse and rat (∼1-3%) and may prove a preferable murine model with which to study cone-driven information processing in retina and primary visual centers. However, other than regions involved in circadian control, little is known about the retinorecipient structures in this rodent. Retinal projections in the short-tailed fruit bat, Carollia perspicillata, as studied using the axonal transport of cholera toxin B subunit: Comparison with mouse.

To provide a modern description of the Chiropteran visual system, the subcortical retinal projections were studied in the short-tailed fruit bat, Carollia perspicillata, using the anterograde transport of eye-injected cholera toxin B subunit, supplemented by the silver-impregnation of anterograde degeneration following eye removal, and compared with the retinal projections of the mouse. The retinal projections were heavily labeled by the transported toxin in both species. Almost all components of the murine retinal projection are present in Carollia in varying degrees of prominence and lateral

Understanding subcortical projections to the lateral posterior thalamic nucleus and its subregions using retrograde neural tracing.

The rat lateral posterior thalamic nucleus (LP) is composed of the rostromedial (LPrm), lateral (LPl), and caudomedial parts, with LPrm and LPl being areas involved in information processing within the visual cortex. Nevertheless, the specific differences in the subcortical projections to the LPrm and LPl remain elusive. In this study, we aimed to reveal the subcortical regions that project axon fibers to the LPl and LPrm using a retrograde neural tracer, Fluorogold (FG). After FG injection into the LPrm or LPl, the area was visualized immunohistochemically. Retrogradely labeled neurons from t

Astasia, asymmetrical asterixis and pretectal syndrome in thalamo-mesencephalic hemorrhage.

We report a patient who presented with sudden onset instability and diplopia. On neurological examination he had asymmetrical asterixis, predominantly in the left hand, and ocular findings consistent with a pretectal syndrome. He was also unable to stand or even sit up unassisted, with a tendency to tilt his body and rotate his trunk axis to the left. Brain MRI showed a hemorrhage in the right thalamo-mesencephalic junction. This region involves important structures for the control of postural stability, motor control, ocular movements and vestibulo-ocular integration, not yet well understood.

Abnormal ocular motility with brainstem and cerebellar disorders.

The disorders of ocular motility seen in association with brainstem or cerebellar disorders may point to rather specific anatomical or pathological correlations. Pontine gaze palsy reflects involvement of the pontine paramedian reticular formation. Internuclear ophthalmoplegia signifies a lesion in the medial longitudinal fasciculus. Skew deviation may result from a lesion anywhere in the posterior fossa. Ocular bobbing typically results from a pontine lesion. The Sylvian aqueduct syndrome is characteristic of involvement in the upper midbrain-pretectal region, usually a pinealoma. Cerebellar

Afferent and efferent connections of the parapineal organ in lampreys: a tract tracing and immunocytochemical study.

The neural connections of the parapineal organ of two species of lampreys were studied with the fluorescent dye 1,1'-dioctadecyl-3,3,3'3'-tetramethylindocarbocyanine perchlorate (DiI) and with immunocytochemistry. The lamprey parapineal organ consists of a vesicle and a ganglion that are connected to the left habenula. Labeling experiments included the application of DiI to the parapineal organ, left and right fasciculus retroflexus, left habenula, and the left pretectal region. Afferent parapineal fibers run in the left fasciculus retroflexus to the interpeduncular nucleus. The parapineal fib

Afferent and efferent connections of the mesencephalic reticular formation in goldfish.

The physiology of the mesencephalic reticular formation (MRF) in goldfish suggests its contribution to eye and body movements, but the afferent and efferent connections underlying such movements have not been determined. Therefore, we injected the bidirectional tracer biotinylated dextran amine into functionally identified MRF sites. We found retrogradely labelled neurons and anterogradely labelled boutons within nuclei of the following brain regions: (1) the telencephalon: a weak and reciprocal connectivity was confined to the central zone of area dorsalis and ventral nucleus of area ventrali

Reciprocal connections between the periaqueductal gray matter and other somatosensory regions of the cat midbrain: a possible mechanism of pain inhibition.

Lectin-conjugated horseradish peroxidase was injected or implanted in crystalline form into various parts of the periaqueductal gray matter (PAG) in the cat. After varying survival periods, the animals were fixed and the mesencephalon was sectioned and incubated for HRP histochemistry. Outside PAG, labelled cells and terminal labelling were observed in the cuneiform, parabrachial and intercollicular nuclei, in the deep and intermediate gray layers of the superior colliculus, in the anterior and posterior pretectal nuclei and in the nucleus of Darkschewitsch. This study has shown that the regio

Retinal projections in two crocodilian species, Caiman crocodilus and Crocodylus niloticus.

The retinal projections of Caiman crocodilus and Crocodylus niloticus were investigated by means of the orthograde axonal transport of either rhodamine beta-isothiocyanate or tritiated proline. In these two species, each tracer revealed contralateral retinal projections to three hypothalamic regions (subventricular gray matter, nucleus suprachiasmaticus, and area optica hypothalami lateralis), five thalamic regions (nuclei ovalis, dorsolateralis anterior, ventrolateralis and ventrobasalis, and lateral geniculate complex, of which six subcomponents can be distinguished), six pretectal regions (

[Identification of nuclei of the pretectal area during stereotaxic surgery for spastic torticollis].

The neurons of mesencephalic nuclear structures were studied by microelectrode techniques for functional identification of the interstitial nucleus of Cajal during 18 stereotaxic operations on patients with torticollis. It is shown that the use of microneuronography for functional identification of structures of the pretectal region and mesencephalic structures bordering it is promising. The functional cellular complexes of these structures which respond selectively to voluntary movements of the eyes and head, rapid voluntary movements of the eyes, fixation and maintenance of the gaze, and com

Calretinin expression in specific neuronal systems in the brain of an advanced teleost, the grey mullet (Chelon labrosus).

The distribution of calretinin (CR) in the brain of an "advanced" teleost, the grey mullet, was studied by using immunoblotting and immunocytochemical techniques. In immunoblots of protein extracts of rat and mullet brains, the CR antibody stained a single band of about 29 kDa. CR immunoreactivity was observed in specific neuronal populations of all brain regions. The primary olfactory system, the optic nerve fibers, and some sensory fibers of other cranial nerves exhibited strong CR immunoreactivity. In the forebrain, the CR-immunoreactive (CR-ir) populations were scarce in the telencephalon

The transcription factor Pax6 is required for development of the diencephalic dorsal midline secretory radial glia that form the subcommissural organ.

During brain development, Pax6 is expressed in specific regions of the diencephalon including secretory cells of the subcommissural organ (SCO), a circumventricular organ at the forebrain-midbrain boundary that originates from the pretectal dorsal midline neuroepithelial cells beneath the posterior commissure (PC). Homozygous small eye (Sey/Sey) mice lack functional Pax6 protein and fail to develop the SCO, a normal PC and the pineal gland. Small eye heterozygotes (Sey/+) show defective development of the SCO's basal processes which normally penetrate the PC, indicating that normal development

Brain inputs to the vestibular nuclei in lampreys.

INTRODUCTION: To avoid image blurring, the vestibulo-ocular (VOR) and the optokinetic (OKR) reflexes stabilize gaze. In all vertebrates, the VOR is mediated via direct projections from the vestibular nuclei to the motor nuclei that control the extraocular muscles. Lampreys show three vestibular nuclei that are well characterized in terms of their projections and sensory inputs, but much less is known about their inputs from other brain regions and the connectivity between them. METHODS: We used tracer injections and extracellular electrophysiological recordings, to analyze the inputs to each

Neural connections of the pineal organ in the primitive bony fish Acipenser baeri: a carbocyanine dye tract-tracing study.

The pineal organ of the sturgeon (Acipenser baeri; Chondrostei) consists of an elongated terminal vesicle and a long stalk that runs to the region of the posterior commissure. In order to investigate the neural connections of the pineal organ of the surgeon, a fluorescent indocarbocyanine (DiI) was applied to the pineal stalk of paraformaldehyde-fixed brains. This application strongly labeled the pineal tracts (right and left), which form an extensive bilateral projection to the brain. The fibers of these tracts could be followed to their different targets in the brain, namely the preoptic reg
