A comparison of ultraviolet-curing and self-curing polymers in preventive, restorative and orthodontic dentistry.

Both self-cured and UV-cured resin-base dental materials are used in preventive, restorative, and orthodontic dentistry. Polymerization is initiated in both systems by free radicals. Self-curing materials generate free radicals by means of chemical compounds included in their formulation. UV-curing systems rely upon externally-supplied, long wavelength, ultraviolet radiation to produce free radicals within the material. Therefore, although the major chemical components of both systems are similar in many respects, each system has particular advantages and disadvantages over the other, which mu

Effectiveness of silver diamine fluoride in preventing and arresting dental caries in pediatric dentistry.

BACKGROUND: Dental caries is one of the most prevalent chronic diseases among children worldwide. Conventional caries management methods such as fluoride sealants and varnishes are widely used; however, newer noninvasive therapies like silver diamine fluoride (SDF) have gained attention. SDF has been proposed as a topical treatment for pediatric carious lesions, with advantages including arresting caries progression, reducing pain, and promoting remineralization with minimal intervention. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This review summarizes available evidence on the effectiveness of SDF as a caries

Prehabilitation in Implant Dentistry: An Essential Strategy for Primordial Prevention of Peri-Implant Diseases.

Peri-implant diseases (PIDs) are highly prevalent and threaten both the success and longevity of implant-supported prostheses. Their prevention should begin before implant surgery (i.e., primordial prevention) by avoiding risk factor exposure and ensuring optimal implant placement conditions. Prehabilitation, a multimodal strategy already used in other surgical fields, can be applied to implant dentistry to optimize patient status before surgery. By addressing modifiable behavioral risk factors and strengthening systemic and local conditions, prehabilitation would enhance both short- and long-

Prevention of Occupational Hazards Due to Asbestos Exposure in Dentistry. A Proposal from a Panel of Experts.

Asbestos in all its forms is a Group 1 material agent with proven carcinogenic effects in the human being since 1977. Exposure to asbestos can be considered unsafe. The use of asbestos in the field of dentistry had a common use in the manufacture of dental prostheses in the 1960s and 1970s. Taking into account the long induction period of this agent and the plausibility for being a risk factor in dentistry, the objective of this study is to propose a plan for the prevention of occupational risks due to asbestos exposure in dentistry by means of the contribution of a panel of experts. An Expert

Behavioural science in dentistry. The role of the dental hygienist in prevention and treatment of the fearful dental patient.

The prevalence of dental anxiety in the general population seems to be fairly stable, and the incidence is not reduced in spite of more modern treatment methods. Intensive fear often leads to avoidance of care and consequences like poor oral health, psychosocial problems and reduced quality of life. The aetiology of dental anxiety is complex, but is often associated with direct traumatic dental experiences during childhood. These negative experiences are reported as painful/unpleasant and are influenced by the patient's perception of lack of coping and control. The theory of latent inhibition

Bioactive and Ion-releasing materials in minimum intervention dentistry: a clinical pathway from prevention to restorative treatment.

INTRODUCTION: This paper examined the clinical applications of "bioactive" dental materials within a framework of minimum intervention dentistry, ranging from non-invasive to invasive procedures for managing carious lesions. Modern approaches to caries management emphasise personalised care, caries risk assessment, and lesion activity evaluation, combined with the strategic use of ion-releasing biomaterials (IRB). These materials, which can release ions such as calcium, phosphate, fluoride and other ions, may support dental remineralization, stabilize collagen, buffer pH, and deter bacterial g

Global consensus report of the World Federation for Laser Dentistry (WFLD) on laser-assisted caries treatment and prevention.

BACKGROUND: This article presents the global consensus report of the World Federation for Laser Dentistry (WFLD) on laser-assisted caries prevention and management. Laser-assisted caries removal is a minimally invasive approach based on selective ablation, targeting demineralized tissues while preserving the adjacent healthy enamel and dentin. This approach aligns with the principles of modern conservative dentistry. Erbium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet (Er:YAG) and erbium, chromium-doped yttrium scandium gallium garnet (Er,Cr:YSGG) lasers are highly absorbed by water and hydroxyapatite (HAP),

The future of dentistry in England: A vision for 2050 - From access crisis to health creation: Prevention, integration and public value.

By 2050, dentistry could be transformed by regenerative science, artificial intelligence, remote monitoring and more integrated digital records. The central question is whether those advances translate into better oral health for all or widen existing inequalities in access and outcomes. Many of the enabling technologies are already emerging; the more important question is how they are organised, commissioned and distributed. This paper argues for a shift from episodic repair towards health creation: preventing disease, identifying risk earlier, preserving tissue and function, and connecting o
