Preventive health services for young children in Israel: historical development and current challenges.

PURPOSE: Pediatric preventive health services are delivered in many different formats throughout the world. In Israel, these services for young children are provided in designated Maternal Child Health Clinics (MCHC). The history and operation of Israel's MCHC have been described primarily in the Hebrew language medical literature with most of these reports being over a decade old. This paper provides an up to date summary of the evolution and current care in Israel's one-hundred-year old model for the provision of preschool preventive health services. As these clinics have been recognized by

Factors associated with use of preventive dental and health services among U.S. adolescents.

PURPOSE: To examine adolescents' use of preventive medical and dental services and its relationship to demographic characteristics and other variables reflecting access to and need for care. METHODS: Self- and parent-reported data from a sample of 5644 adolescents aged 11 to 21 years from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health (Add Health). Variables studied include the influence of both the adolescents' demographic and socioeconomic characteristics (age, race/ethnicity, place of birth, acculturation, insurance status, and perception of health), as well as those of their parents

Preventive Health Services in Reproductive-Aged Women with Diabetes Mellitus: A Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: Diabetes mellitus (DM), both type 1 (T1DM) and type 2 (T2DM), complicates about 1% of pregnancies in the US. Current research frequently focuses on the effects of DM on pregnancy outcomes, overlooking the opportunity to examine a woman's health prior to pregnancy despite the significance of pre-conception health on pregnancy outcomes. METHODS: Recognizing the importance of a woman's overall health, and not just the period in which a woman is pregnant, we set out to explore whether women with DM received recommended preventive health services at the same rates as women without DM.

[The mentally retarded and the dental health services. Treatment needs and preventive strategies].

Mentally retarded individuals are, since 1984 a priority group for the Norwegian public dental health service. This group of patients may have many problems which affect oral health. Difficulties with feeding are common, as are various oral motor problems like rumination, bruxism, mouth breathing and drooling. The impaired oral function may cause retention of food, reduced self-cleaning from lips and tongue and long-term use of puree food. Obstipation is a common problem which is often treated with prunes, raisins or sweetened laxatives. In behaviour modification programs sweets are often used

Survivors were matched 1:1 to non-cancer controls from the 5% Medicare Beneficiary file on age, race, state of residence, and follow-up time. Receipt of flu vaccination, mammography, and bone density tests were examined in accordance with national

Organisation of preventive child health services: Key to socio-economic equity in vaccine uptake?

Background: Measles has made a comeback in Western Europe, with more cases being reported each year. One factor behind this development is low vaccination coverage in socially disadvantaged segments of the population in many countries. This study investigates whether socioeconomic patterns of uptake of the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine in the Nordic countries differ by national organisation of preventive health services for children. Methods: MMR vaccine uptake before the age of two years was analysed in register data from Denmark, Finland, Iceland and Sweden, linked to family indic

The use of preventive health care services: carrier testing for the genetic disorder haemophilia.

A retrospective study was performed to explore carrier testing among women who were possible or obligate carriers of the haemophilia gene. Knowledge of the possibility of carrier testing and use of carrier testing were studied separately. In our exploration we were guided by the diffusion theory and the Health Belief Model. Logistic regression analysis showed that four factors were statistically significant related to knowledge of carrier testing: information via mass media, a haemophilic relative in the nuclear family rather than in the extended family, medical severity of haemophilia, and in

Identifying gaps in women's preventive health services for women living with HIV in Vermont.

BACKGROUND: Women living with HIV (WLHIV) in the United States experience higher rates of death from cervical and breast cancer and lower screening rates for both compared to women without HIV. These disparities highlight the need to better understand access to and uptake of women's preventive health services-particularly cervical cancer screening, breast cancer screening, and HPV vaccination. Most existing data on these services among WLHIV come from urban settings; therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate factors affecting adherence to these preventive health measures among WL

Awareness and utilization of preventive care services among the elderly under National Health Insurance.

This empirical study investigates the factors affecting the awareness and the utilization of preventive care among the elderly in Taiwan. We use data obtained from the 2005 National Health Interview Survey. A recursive bivariate probit model is adopted to analyze the factors affecting the awareness and the utilization of preventive care. The probability of awareness of free preventive care under the National Health Insurance is higher for those who are younger, Mainlanders, have received more education, have a spouse, exercise regularly, have better self-rated health status, and have chronic d

The Use of the CDC Preventive Health and Health Services Block Grant to Address Social Determinants of Health to Advance Health Equity.

OBJECTIVE: State public health departments use federal funding to examine and address social determinants of health (SDOH) within their communities to improve health and advance health equity. Yet, most federal funding is categorical (ie, funding used for a specific program or narrow purpose), which can create barriers to addressing social and structural drivers of inequity. The Preventive Health and Health Services Block Grant (PHHS Block Grant) is a flexible funding mechanism that provides health departments the latitude to identify and fund initiatives that address local public health needs

Effect of Elementary School-Based Health Centers in Georgia on the Use of Preventive Services.

INTRODUCTION: This study measures effects on the receipt of preventive care among children enrolled in Georgia's Medicaid or Children's Health Insurance Program associated with the implementation of new elementary school-based health centers. The study sites differed by geographic environment and predominant race/ethnicity (rural white, non-Hispanic; black, small city; and suburban Hispanic). METHODS: A quasi-experimental treatment/control cohort study used Medicaid/Children's Health Insurance Program claims/enrollment data for children in school years before implementation (2011-2012 and 201

Health status and health insurance coverage of women with live-born infants: an opportunity for preventive services after pregnancy.

Most women in the US have access to health care and insurance during pregnancy; however women with Medicaid-paid deliveries lose Medicaid eligibility in the early postpartum period. This study examined the association between health insurance coverage at the time of delivery and health conditions that may require preventive or treatment services extending beyond pregnancy into the postpartum period. We used 2008 Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System data from 27 states (n = 35,980). We calculated the prevalence of maternal health conditions, including emotional and behavioral risks, by h

Organisation of health services for preventing and treating pressure ulcers.

BACKGROUND: Pressure ulcers, which are a localised injury to the skin, or underlying tissue, or both, occur when people are unable to reposition themselves to relieve pressure on bony prominences. Pressure ulcers are often difficult to heal, painful, expensive to manage and have a negative impact on quality of life. While individual patient safety and quality care stem largely from direct healthcare practitioner-patient interactions, each practitioner-patient wound-care contact may be constrained or enhanced by healthcare organisation of services. Research is needed to demonstrate clearly the

A Scoping Review of Economic Evaluations to Inform the Reorientation of Preventive Health Services in Australia.

The Australian National Preventive Health Strategy 2021-2030 recommended the establishment of evidence-based frameworks to enable local public health services to identify strategies and interventions that deliver value for money. This study aimed to review the cost-effectiveness of preventive health strategies to inform the reorientation of local public health services towards preventive health interventions that are financially sustainable. Four electronic databases were searched for reviews published between 2005 and February 2022. Reviews that met the following criteria were included: popul
