Teaching primary palliative nursing care: A model of competency-based education.

Holistic care models such as primary palliative care offer individuals a coordinated, interprofessional and compassionate approach in any healthcare setting regardless of condition. Currently, palliative and end-of-life nursing care content is either threaded throughout nursing curricula or not included at all. As a result, new nurses report being inadequately prepared to provide quality palliative or end-of-life care in practice (Parekh de Campos et al., 2022; Lippe, 2019). A team of expert nurse faculty at a large public university utilized the RE-AIM framework to describe the development an

Quality Indicators of Primary Care Provider Engagement in Nursing Home Care.

The initiative described here aims to identify quality indicators (QIs) germane to the international practice of primary care providers (PCP) in post-acute and long-term care in order to demonstrate the added value of medical providers in nursing homes (NHs). A 7-member international team identified and adapted existing QIs to the AMDA competencies for medical providers. QI sources included the ACOVE 3 Quality Indicators (2007), NH Quality Indicators (2004), NH Residential Care Quality Indicators (2002), and AGS Choosing Wisely (2014). We recruited a technical expert panel (TEP) consisting of

Collaborative Primary Mental Health Education for Correctional Nurses.

Whitireia New Zealand and the Department of Corrections have worked collaboratively since 2008 in developing and delivering primary mental health (PMH) training for registered correctional nurses, specifically focused on assessment and brief interventions applicable to a primary health setting. The PMH training program was undertaken and evaluated by Department of Correction nurses between 2009 and 2016. Significant improvements in PMH learning outcomes were noted among 396 participants, while 98% applied knowledge gained from the PMH workshops to their practice. This highly successful educati

Primary pulmonary hypertension: a review for advanced practice nurses.

Primary pulmonary hypertension (PPH) is a rare entity of unknown etiology, manifested as narrowing and obstruction of the pulmonary arteries leading to elevated pulmonary artery pressures. Left untreated, these high pressures can lead to right ventricular dilation, right heart failure, and death within 3 to 5 years. Over the last decade, advances have been made in the diagnosis and treatment of PPH. Advanced practice nurses and other expert nurses can use and interpret diagnostic and therapeutic medical regimens currently available to identify and treat this rare condition.

Primary prevention of hypertension: a challenge for occupational health nurses.

1. About one in four adults in the United States has high blood pressure on the basis of a single evaluation. Hypertension is associated with an increased risk of developing coronary heart disease, stroke, congestive heart failure, renal insufficiency, and peripheral vascular disease. 2. Weight loss, reduced sodium intake, reduced alcohol consumption, and exercise have documented efficacy as interventions to decrease high blood pressure. A number of intervention programs in community based settings and in health care provider practice based settings have documented that behavioral change and r

Primary Central Nervous System Lymphoma: Treatment and Nursing Management of Immunocompetent Patients.

BACKGROUND: Primary central nervous system lymphoma (PCNSL) is a rare primary brain tumor. Because of its rarity and the increasing incidence rates as the U.S. population ages, it is important for nurses to understand the unique needs of patients and their caregivers during the disease continuum. OBJECTIVES: This article provides an overview of the treatment and nursing management of immunocompetent patients with PCNSL. METHODS: An extensive examination of the current literature, including incidence, diagnosis, treatment, and implications for nursing, was performed. FINDINGS: Nurses play a

The status and model of children primary nephrotic syndrome in continuing nursing.

BACKGROUND: Nephrotic syndrome (NS) is a common glomerular disease in children. Nursing during hospitalization alone cannot solve the psychological, physiological and social health problems of children. Continuing care models may provide patients with more continuous and efficient care services. Therefore, the present study aimed to provide theoretical support for the implementation and development of children's primary nephrotic syndrome (PNS) and children's chronic disease continuing nursing through the construction of a children's PNS continuing nursing model. METHODS: Each item of the tra

[Primary Prevention of Impairments of Mobility Among Nursing Home Residents with Dementia].

The main aim of the study was to investigate the effectiveness of multidisciplinary guidelines in promoting the mobility of people with dementia in 20 German nursing homes. The study was based on a semi-experimental design [pre-post design with intervention (IG) and control group]. The statistical analyses revealed a significantly slower decline of the ability to walk among the residents of the IG than among the controls. With regard to other outcome measures the results were less clear.

Simulated scenario of nursing consultation for long COVID in primary health care.

OBJECTIVE: To develop a simulated scenario for undergraduate education on nursing consultation in long COVID situations in Primary Health Care. METHOD: This is an applied methodological study divided into two stages: first, the clinical case was constructed and validated with nurses with experience in Primary Health Care and/or clinical simulation (n=9). Then, the scenario was constructed and validated with a group of judges composed of professors and postgraduate students (n=11). The Content Validity Index was used to analyze the data, with an agreement level of 80%. RESULTS: The clinical c

[Ineffective sexuality pattern in an adolescent: nursing approach in primary health care].

Adolescent is a phase of continual physiological, psychological and social adaptation. It is during this time that young people tend to have their first sexual experiences. Sexual dysfunctions are characterized by important clinical changes in sexual desire and/or by psycho-physiological changes in the sexual response cycle. Premature ejaculation is one of the most frequent sexual dysfunction amongst men, with a higher prevalence in the younger population compared to other populations. The clinical case is presented of a 17 year-old male who experienced difficulties during his sexual relations

Primary care physicians and nurses: Targets for basic periodontal education.

BACKGROUND: Early diagnosis may improve patients' quality of life and reduce the lifelong social and financial burden inherent to treatment. Growing evidence supports the importance of a healthy periodontium in systemic health. Diagnosis depends on the patient and the healthcare professional. As many patients seek physicians' advice first, this study aims at assessing periodontal knowledge in a general population and their primary care physicians and nurses. METHODS: This is a cross-sectional study using an anonymous questionnaire applied to randomly selected laypersons (March to June 2016),

Practice nurse management of hypertension in primary care: a scoping review.

AIM: To review the current diagnosis and treatment of hypertension (HTN) and explore alternative care management options. BACKGROUND: HTN is underdiagnosed and poorly managed in the UK. With an increasing emphasis on teamwork in primary care (PC), what is the evidence base supporting the partial or complete management of HTN by practice nurses (PNs)? METHODS: Using the PRISMA-Scr checklist as a framework, six database searches (BNI, CINAHL, Embase, Emcare, Medline, and PubMed) were conducted using Boolean Operators between December 2023 and February 2024, employing four search structures to

Nurses' perceptions of mental healthcare in primary-care settings in Kenya.

Kenya maintains an extraordinary treatment gap for mental health services because the need for and availability of mental health services are extraordinarily misaligned. One way to narrow the treatment gap is task-sharing, where specialists rationally distribute tasks across the health system, with many responsibilities falling upon frontline health workers, including nurses. Yet, little is known about how nurses perceive task-sharing mental health services. This article investigates nurses' perceptions of mental healthcare delivery within primary-care settings in Kenya. We conducted a cross-s
