Ovarian dysfunction, stress, and disease: a primate continuum.

Menopause is recognized as a period of increased risk for coronary heart disease (CHD) and osteoporosis. Vulnerability to these conditions is often attributed to the naturally occurring estrogen deficiency characteristic of this part of the life cycle. Premenopausal reductions in endogenous estrogen occasioned by functional ovarian abnormalities or failure are hypothesized to be similarly pathogenic and to accelerate development of CHD and osteoporosis prematurely, thereby increasing the health burden of older women. These functional abnormalities, which occur along a continuum from mild, lute

Development of neurologic diseases in a patient with primate T lymphotropic virus type 1 (PTLV-1).

BACKGROUND: Virus transmission from various wild and domestic animals contributes to an increased risk of emerging infectious diseases in human populations. HTLV-1 is a human retrovirus associated with acute T-cell leukemia and HTLV-1-associated myelopathy/tropical spastic paraparesis (HAM/TSP). HTLV-1 originated from ancient zoonotic transmission from nonhuman primates, although cases of zoonotic infections continue to occur. Similar to HTLV-1, the simian counterpart, STLV-1, causes chronic infection and leukemia and lymphoma in naturally infected monkeys, and combined are called primate T-ly

The MPTP marmoset model of parkinsonism: a multi-purpose non-human primate model for neurodegenerative diseases.

Aging societies face an increasing prevalence of neurodegenerative disorders for which no cure exists. The paucity of relevant animal models that faithfully reproduce clinical and pathogenic features of neurodegenerative diseases is a major cause for the lack of effective therapies. Clinically distinct disorders, such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease, are driven by overlapping pathogenic mechanisms that converge onto vulnerable neurons to ultimately cause abnormal clinical outcomes. These similarities, particularly in the early phases of neurodegeneration, might help identify appropriate

Relationship Between Periodontal Disease and Systemic Diseases in Non-Human Primates.

BACKGROUND: Periodontal disease in non-human primates (NHPs) has gained relevance due to its similarities with human pathology and its potential to influence systemic health. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between periodontal disease and the development of systemic conditions in NHPs, aiming to understand the mechanisms involved and their clinical significance. METHODS: An integrative literature review was conducted using the PICO strategy, including observational studies, experimental research, and integrative reviews that examined periodontal disease in NHPs a

Primates on display: Potential disease consequences beyond bushmeat.

Human interactions with nonhuman primates vary tremendously, from daily cultural engagements and food commodities, to pet ownership and tourist encounters. These interactions provide opportunities for the exchange of pathogenic organisms (both zoonoses and anthroponoses). As exposures are not limited to areas where bushmeat usage continues to be a major problem, we must work to understand better our motivations for engaging in activities like owning primates as pets and having direct physical contact with wild primates within the context of nature-based tourism. These topics, and the theoretic

Primate segmental duplications: crucibles of evolution, diversity and disease.

Compared with other mammals, the genomes of humans and other primates show an enrichment of large, interspersed segmental duplications (SDs) with high levels of sequence identity. Recent evidence has begun to shed light on the origin of primate SDs, pointing to a complex interplay of mechanisms and indicating that distinct waves of duplication took place during primate evolution. There is also evidence for a strong association between duplication, genomic instability and large-scale chromosomal rearrangements. Exciting new findings suggest that SDs have not only created novel primate gene fami

Polyclonal gammopathies associated with chronic diseases in nonhuman primates.

Serum samples collected from clinically healthy rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta) were compared with serums from animals diagnosed as having malignant lymphoma, atypical tuberculosis, progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy, or more than 1 of these. Electrophoretic analyses of serum proteins (in grams per deciliter) indicated that mean values in a clinically normal group were as follows--total protein, 8.30; albumin, 4.07; alpha-globulin, 0.85; beta-globulin, 2.23; and gamma-globulin, 1.15. In macaques with malignant lymphoma, mean values were--total protein, 7.60; albumin, 2.72; alpha-globu

A small nonhuman primate model for filovirus-induced disease.

Ebolavirus and Marburgvirus are members of the filovirus family and induce a fatal hemorrhagic disease in humans and nonhuman primates with 90% case fatality. To develop a small nonhuman primate model for filovirus disease, common marmosets (Callithrix jacchus) were intramuscularly inoculated with wild type Marburgvirus Musoke or Ebolavirus Zaire. The infection resulted in a systemic fatal disease with clinical and morphological features closely resembling human infection. Animals experienced weight loss, fever, high virus titers in tissue, thrombocytopenia, neutrophilia, high liver transamina

Microinfarction as a result of hypertension in a primate model of cerebrovascular disease.

Ten adult cynomolgus monkeys were studied as a non-human primate model of hypertensive cerebrovascular disease. Seven were made hypertensive by surgical coarctation of the aorta and three served as unoperated controls. After survival periods of 8-30 months, the brains were serially sectioned and surveyed for neuropathological changes. The most conspicuous change was minute areas of microinfarction in the white and gray matter. The lesions were of irregular shape with an average maximum diameter of less than 0.5 mm. They were slightly larger in the gray than in the white matter and appeared to

Occurrence of stroke in a nonhuman primate model of cerebrovascular disease.

A relation between hypertension, atherosclerosis, and stroke is well documented in humans. We report a similar relation in two hypertensive cynomolgus monkeys with severe cerebral atherosclerosis. In our primate model hypertension is induced by surgical coarctation of the aorta. These monkeys, when fed an atherogenic diet, develop severe cerebrovascular atherosclerosis. In this setting two monkeys developed spontaneous cerebral hemispheric strokes that occurred during treatment of hypertension. Since the strokes were topographically related to severe atherosclerotic narrowing of cerebral arter

[Does Alzheimer's disease exist in all primates? Alzheimer pathology in non-human primates and its pathophysiological implications (II)].

INTRODUCTION: In the ageing process there are some species of non-human primates which can show some of the defining characteristics of the Alzheimer's disease (AD) of man, both in neuropathological changes and cognitive-behavioural symptoms. The study of these species is of prime importance to understand AD and develop therapies to combat this neurodegenerative disease. DEVELOPMENT: In this second part of the study, these AD features are discussed in the most important non-experimental AD models (Mouse Lemur -Microcebus murinus, Caribbean vervet -Chlorocebus aethiops, and the Rhesus and stum

[Does Alzheimer's disease exist in all primates? Alzheimer pathology in non-human primates and its pathophysiological implications (I)].

INTRODUCTION: Many publications consider that Alzheimer's disease (AD) is exclusive to the human species, and that no other animal species suffers from the disease. However, various studies have shown that some species can present with some of the defining characteristics of the human disease, including both neuropathological changes and cognitive-behavioural symptoms. DEVELOPMENT: In this work, the results published (PubMed) on senile brain changes in non-human primates of different degrees of evolution, are reviewed. The neuropathological changes associated with the accumulation of amyloid

Use of Nonhuman Primates in Periodontal Disease Research: Contribution of the Caribbean Primate Research Center and Cayo Santiago Rhesus Colony.

This review article provides a historical summary regarding the use, value, and validity of the nonhuman primate model of periodontal disease. The information provided cites results regarding the features of naturally occurring periodontitis in various nonhuman primate species, as well as the implementation of a model of experimental periodontitis. Clinical similarities to human disease are discussed, as well as the use of these models to document physiological and pathophysiological tissue changes in the periodontium related to the initiation and progression of the disease. Additionally, the

Advances in non-human primate models for Alzheimer's disease research.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common progressive neurodegenerative disease. It is characterized by cognitive decline and brain pathology, including amyloid-β (Aβ) plaques, neurofibrillary tangles, and neuroinflammation. While rodent models have contributed to our understanding of a multiplicity of disease mechanisms, their limitations in replicating human age-related neurodegenerative diseases pose challenges for translating research findings to the clinical setting. The common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus), a small non-human primate, has emerged as a promising model for neuroscience an

Onset and Progression of Disease in Nonhuman Primates With PDE6C Cone Disorder.

PURPOSE: The California National Primate Research Center contains a colony of rhesus macaques with a homozygous missense mutation in PDE6C (R565Q) which causes a cone disorder similar to PDE6C achromatopsia in humans. The purposes of this study are to characterize the phenotype in PDE6C macaques in detail to determine the onset of the cone phenotype, the degree to which the phenotype progresses, if heterozygote animals have an intermediate phenotype, and if rod photoreceptor function declines over time. METHODS: We analyzed spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT), fundus autoflu

Striatal Interneurons in Transgenic Nonhuman Primate Model of Huntington's Disease.

Huntington's disease is an autosomal dominant neurodegenerative disorder associated with progressive motor and cognitive impairments, and the expansion of a cysteine-adenine-guanine trinucleotide (polyglutamine) repeats in exon one of the human huntingtin gene. The pathology of the disease is characterized by a profound degeneration of striatal GABAergic projection neurons with relative sparing of interneurons accompanied with astrogliosis. Here, we describe the striatal pathology in two genotypically different transgenic HD monkeys that exhibit degrees of disease progression that resembled th
