Tablets with material gradients fabricated by three-dimensional printing.

Complex tablets with zero-order drug release characteristics were fabricated using three-dimensional printing processes. The matrix tablets exhibited material gradients in radial direction and had drug-free release-barrier layers on both bases. The content of model drug acetaminophen incorporated in the tablets through premixing reached up to 68% of the tablets' weight. Tablets with ethylcellulose gradients showed acceptable mechanical and pharmacotechnical properties, as indicated by crushing strength, friability, and content uniformity tests. The structure and the gradients of ethylcellulose

Cardiovascular Three-Dimensional Printing in Non-Congenital Percutaneous Interventions.

Three-dimensional (3D) printing technology is emerging as a potential new tool for the planning of medical interventions. In the last few years, increasing data have accumulated on its ability to guide interventional cardiology procedures, going beyond initial reports in congenital heart disease settings. In fact, there is compelling evidence on the advantages of a 3D-printed guided strategy for left atrial appendage closure, suggesting a high success rate with optimal device selection and lower radiation load. Furthermore, there is emerging experience in aortic root printing, which may improv

Three-dimensional printing in structural heart disease and intervention.

Three-dimensional (3D) printing refers to the process by which physical objects are built by depositing materials in layers based on a specific digital design. It was initially used in manufacture industry. Inspired by the technology, clinicians have recently attempted to integrate 3D printing into medical applications. One of the medical specialties that has recently made such attempt is cardiology, especially in the field of structural heart disease (SHD). SHD refers to a group of non-coronary cardiovascular disorders and related interventions. Obvious examples are aortic stenosis, mitral re

Integrating three-dimensional printing and nanotechnology for musculoskeletal regeneration.

The field of tissue engineering is advancing steadily, partly due to advancements in rapid prototyping technology. Even with increasing focus, successful complex tissue regeneration of vascularized bone, cartilage and the osteochondral interface remains largely illusive. This review examines current three-dimensional printing techniques and their application towards bone, cartilage and osteochondral regeneration. The importance of, and benefit to, nanomaterial integration is also highlighted with recent published examples. Early-stage successes and challenges of recent studies are discussed, w

Preliminary application of three-dimensional printing in congenital uterine anomalies based on three-dimensional transvaginal ultrasonographic data.

BACKGROUND: The three-dimensional (3D) printing technology has remarkable potential as an auxiliary tool for representing anatomical structures, facilitating diagnosis and therapy, and enhancing training and teaching in the medical field. As the most available diagnostic tool and it is routinely used as the first approach in diagnosis of the uterine anomalies, 3D transvaginal ultrasonography (3D-TVS) has been proposed as non-invasive "gold standard" approach for these malformations due to high diagnostic accuracy. Despite holding promise of manufacturing 3D printed models based on 3D-TVS data,

Three-Dimensional Printing of the Nasal Cavities for Clinical Experiments.

3D printing has produced many beneficial applications for surgery. The technique´s applicability in replicating nasal cavity anatomy for clinical use has not been studied. Our aim was to determine whether 3D printing could realistically replicate the nasal cavities and the airflow passing through them from a clinical point of view. We included Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) scans of five patients with symptoms of chronic nasal congestion. These CBCT scans were used to print plastic 3D prints of the nasal cavities, which were also CBCT scanned and the measurements were compared. The resul

Applications of three-dimensional printing in orbital diseases and disorders.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To comprehensively review the applications of advanced three-dimensional printing technology in the management of orbital abnormalities. RECENT FINDINGS: Three-dimensional printing has added value in the preoperative planning and manufacturing of patient-specific implants and surgical guides in the reconstruction of orbital trauma, congenital defects and tumor resection. In view of the costs and time, it is reserved as strategy for large and complex craniofacial cases, in particular those including the bony contour. There is anecdotal evidence of a benefit of three-dimensio

Office-Based Three-Dimensional Printing Workflow for Craniomaxillofacial Fracture Repair.

Three-dimensional printing of patient-specific models is being used in various aspects of craniomaxillofacial reconstruction. Printing is typically outsourced to off-site vendors, with the main disadvantages being increased costs and time for production. Office-based 3-dimensional printing has been proposed as a means to reduce costs and delays, but remains largely underused because of the perception among surgeons that it is futuristic, highly technical, and prohibitively expensive. The goal of this report is to demonstrate the feasibility and ease of incorporating in-office 3-dimensional pri

The Use of Three-Dimensional Printing for Complex Scaphoid Fractures.

Scaphoid fractures are one of the most common fractures treated by hand surgeons. The complex anatomy and size of the scaphoid bone can make the reduction and fixation of these fractures technically challenging. Careful preoperative planning is required to ensure stable fixation is achieved. We report on the use of 3-dimensional printing to improve preoperative planning for a series of complex scaphoid fractures.

Three-dimensional printing improves osteochondral allograft placement in complex cases.

The use of three-dimensional (3D) printing has seen a vast expansion over recent years, with an increased application for its use in orthopaedics. This report details the use of 3D printing technology to aid in the treatment of a medial femoral condyle osteochondral defect in a 26-year-old female who had previously undergone a failed autograft procedure. A preoperative computed tomography scan of the knee and chondral defect was used to generate a 3D printed, one-to-one scale replica of the distal femur. This replica was then used to size a patient-specific allograft plug for the osteochondral

Dynamic three-dimensional printing: The future of bronchoscopic simulation training?

High-fidelity models are required for technical mastery of bronchoscopic procedures in the fields of anaesthesia, intensive care, surgery and respiratory medicine. Our group has created a three-dimensional (3D) airway model prototype to emulate physiological and pathological movement. Developed from the concepts of our previously described 3D printed paediatric trachea for airway management training, this model produces movements created by injection of air or saline through a side Luer Lock port. The anaesthesia and intensive care applications of the model could include bronchoscopic navigati
