Dental hygienists--independent practice and pain control services.

In 1990, 78 dental hygienists who were members of the Dutch Dental Hygiene Association and working in an independent practice received a questionnaire (response rate: 79%) about the administration of local anesthesia. The main aim of this study was to determine the need for this service prior to deep scaling. The results of the survey showed that the need to administer local anesthesia for this purpose is limited in spite of the large number of patients with periodontal problems treated in independent dental hygiene practices. In most circumstances the cooperation with the dentist is satisfact

Annual survey: executive compensation under fire.

Compensation of health care executives has continued to grow, largely pushed along by such factors as continuing turnover in top management positions in hospitals, according to the 1992 Hay hospital management/professional survey of compensation and benefits data from over 1,200 U.S. hospitals. And although pay increases are moving up faster among top hospital executives than in industry, overall hospital executive pay still lags. In addition, survey results look at such issues as linking executive pay to various measures of performance.

Practical Considerations for the Academic Physician Moving to a New State.

Moving from one state to another for a new position or opportunity is a common event for academic physicians. Although moving can be personally and professionally disruptive for everyone, it can be particularly challenging for academic physicians. From practical considerations such as applying for a new state medical license to professional challenges such as minimizing disruption to educational or research projects, there are numerous challenges associated with relocating to an academic institution in a new state. Despite the frequency with which academic physicians move between institutions

The role of a bus network in access to primary health care in Metropolitan Auckland, New Zealand.

UNLABELLED: Background: This study examined the spatial accessibility of the population of metropolitan Auckland, New Zealand to the bus network, to connect them to primary health providers, in this case doctors (GP) and dentists. Analysis of accessibility by ethnic identity and socio-economic status were also carried out, because of existing health inequalities along these dimensions. The underlying hypothesis was that most people would live within easy reach of primary health providers, or easy bus transport to such providers. METHODS: An integrated geographic model of bus transport routes

Prevalence and predictors of occupational violence and aggression towards GPs: a cross-sectional study.

Occupational violence and aggression are common in general practice. This study examined occupational violence and aggression against GPs in terms of prevalence and predictive factors, such as sex of GP, and practice location. Over half of the GPs sampled had experienced at least one form of violence and aggression; more female than male GPs experienced sexual harassment; and there was no difference in the number of metropolitan and rural GPs who had experienced violence and aggression. Predictors emerged for verbal abuse, intimidation, physical abuse, and sexual harassment.

Perception of the relationship between TMD and orthodontic treatment among orthodontists.

INTRODUCTION: The consensus about the relationship between TMD and orthodontic treatment has gone from a cause and effect association between TMD and orthodontic treatment to the idea that there is no reliable evidence supporting this statement. OBJECTIVE: To assess the beliefs, despite scientific evidence, of Brazilian orthodontists about the relationship between TMD and orthodontic treatment with regards to treatment, prevention and etiology of TMD. METHODS: A survey about the relationship between TMD and orthodontic treatment was prepared and sent to Brazilian orthodontists by e-mail and

Recruitment of rural health care providers: a regional recruiter strategy.

CONTEXT: Access to care in rural areas is a major problem. Despite more than 20% of the US population residing in these areas, only 9% of physicians practice there. Extensive research has documented multiple issues that affect where physicians decide to locate and maintain practices. Creative strategies have been used to influence these recruitment and retention decisions. An emerging strategy, borne out of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation's Southern Rural Access Program (SRAP), effectively uses a targeted regional approach to assist rural communities and health care facilities in assessing

Gastroenterologists' practice patterns for positive fecal occult blood test.

GOALS: To evaluate gastroenterologists' use of esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) for positive fecal occult blood test (FOBT). BACKGROUND: Colonoscopy is recommended when an FOBT performed for colorectal cancer screening is positive. Guidelines suggest no further evaluation if anemia and gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms are absent. METHODS: Online surveys included 4 vignettes: positive FOBT in average-risk adults 50 years of age or older with/without iron-deficiency anemia and with/without upper GI symptoms. For each scenario, respondents were asked if they would perform colonoscopy only, EGD on

Association between experience quality in a short-term, voluntary, rural, funded, immersion placement program on future rural engagement decisions.

BACKGROUND: Rural immersion programs are commonly used to expose medical students to rural practice using curriculum-embedded placements. However, evidence regarding short-term, funded, voluntary, rural immersion placements that are not part of standard curricula-based training and their association with continued rural workforce engagement remains limited. Participants of the Bush Bursary, a voluntary, scholarship-based rural immersion program delivered through innovative partnerships between local councils, community organisations and the Rural Doctors Network (Australia). Process evaluation of a task-shifting strategy in hormonal contraception: does training translate into practice?

OBJECTIVES: Since 2000, the Province of Quebec has experienced a shortage of physicians and a decrease in access to prescription contraceptives. A task-shifting strategy was launched in 2007 to allow trained nurses, in collaboration with community pharmacists, to start healthy women on hormonal contraception for a six-month period without a medical consultation. This study examined the proportion of trained nurses effectively involved in this innovative practice to determine which factors are associated with it. METHODS: We performed a cross-sectional study in which all nurses who had been tr

Access to syringes for HIV prevention for injection drug users in St. Petersburg, Russia: syringe purchase test study.

BACKGROUND: The HIV epidemic in Russia is concentrated among injection drug users (IDUs). This is especially true for St. Petersburg where high HIV incidence persists among the city's estimated 80,000 IDUs. Although sterile syringes are legally available, access for IDUs may be hampered. To explore the feasibility of using pharmacies to expand syringe access and provide other prevention services to IDUs, we investigated the current access to sterile syringes at the pharmacies and the correlation between pharmacy density and HIV prevalence in St. Petersburg. METHODS: 965 pharmacies citywide we

A study done by the American Academy of Maxillofacial Prosthetics to evaluate the Medicare Resource Based Relative Value Scale (RBRVS) as it relates to maxillofacial prosthetics. The method of RBRVS formulation is described. The degree of difficulty and treatment time were determined for nine Physicians' Current Procedural Terminology-edition 4 (CPT-4) codified maxillofacial procedures. A preliminary survey indicates that practice expense and malpractice expense ratios were 66% and 1%, respectively. Correlation of maxillofacial procedures to other medical procedures was not performed because a

Hepatitis C videoconferencing: the impact on continuing medical education for rural healthcare providers.

This study compared the impact of multipoint videoconferencing (VC) versus standard lecturing (ST) on primary care providers' (MDs, NPs/PAs, and RNs) education regarding hepatitis C virus (HCV). The hypothesis was that the educational impact of teaching through telemedicine is comparable to the traditional method. The aim was to provide participants clinically relevant information and knowledge about the natural history, diagnosis, and management of HCV. Improved knowledge was scored from a 10-item quiz administered before and after the educational intervention. Comparison of the pretest knowl
