The impact of a bladder training video versus standard urotherapy on quality of life of children with bladder and bowel dysfunction: A randomized controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Bladder and bowel dysfunction (BBD) can negatively impact the quality of life (QoL) of children. Urotherapy is an accepted treatment option for BBD; however, literature that examines the impact of management options on QoL in this population is scarce. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether a bladder training video (BTV) is non-inferior to standard urotherapy (SU) in improving QoL in children with BBD. METHODS: Children aged 5-10 years and who scored ≥11 on the Vancouver Non-Neurogenic Lower Urinary Tract Dysfunction/Dysfunctional Elimination Syndrome Questionnaire (NLUTD/DES) were re

Contact Dermatitis and Patch Testing Education: A Work Group Report From the Allergic Skin Diseases Committee of the AAAAI.

Allergic contact dermatitis is effectively diagnosed and treated through the identification of causative allergens via patch testing (PT). Selection of allergens, along with the application and interpretation of PT results, necessitates specialized education and training. Our objective was to investigate the extent to which contact dermatitis (CD) education and PT training are components of the curriculum in Allergy and Immunology (A/I) training programs in the United States and to assess where knowledge gaps may exist. A voluntary 16-item survey was sent to program and associate program direc

A Skills-Based Longitudinal Intervention for Clinician Educators: Addressing Implicit Bias in Patient Care and the Clinical Learning Environment.

INTRODUCTION: Implicit bias contributes to health care disparities. Addressing implicit bias is one focus of health professions education and learners desire instruction in the topic. Few faculties received skills-based instruction in addressing implicit bias during their own education and training and often feel ill-equipped to facilitate this instruction. Recognizing faculty are both learners and teachers in addressing implicit bias, the authors developed a longitudinal faculty development program informed by the implicit bias recognition and management (IBRM) framework. METHODS: The progra

Abortion-care education in Japanese nurse practitioner and midwifery programs: a national survey.

BACKGROUND: While various reports have been published concerning ethical dilemmas in nursing and midwifery, and while many nurses and midwives struggle with the conflict between personal feelings raised by abortion and the duties of their position, few studies investigate the extent and conditions of abortion-care education for registered nurses (RNs) and certified nurse-midwives (CNMs) in Japan. OBJECTIVES: To describe Japanese abortion-care education programs and to investigate program directors' or other relevant persons' perceptions of abortion-care education. DESIGN: Descriptive study w

Translating recent research into meaningful clinical practice.

The goal of this article is to provide a synopsis of research, both basic and applied, that can improve the evaluation and treatment of stuttering in children and adults, as well as counseling of clients, families, and other professionals who interact with the person who stutters. Relevant basic research has informed genetic contributions to stuttering and possible neurological substrates of the disorder. Several treatment approaches to stuttering have recently been published, with varying degrees of apparent efficacy. There has also been increased attention to therapeutic outcomes that go bey

The COVID-19 pandemic: The evaluation of the emergency remote parent training program based on at-home support for children with down syndrome.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the development of emergency remote training programs for young children with Down syndrome, learning difficulties, and severe health problems and their parents became a requirement. The present study aimed to evaluate the impact of the "applied emergency remote training program", prepared to address the needs of parents with children with Down syndrome and to offer them at-home support. It is an evaluative case study conducted with 11 parents of 11-35 months old children with Down syndrome. The findings demonstrated that the program could be conducted in a home e

Anxiety sensitivity and treatment outcome in panic disorder.

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between change in anxiety sensitivity, as measured by the Anxiety Sensitivity Index (ASI), and treatment outcome in a sample of 106 subjects with a DSM-III-R diagnosis of panic disorder (with or without agoraphobia) who were participants in an evaluation study of cognitive-behavioral treatment. Results revealed that subjects who received active treatment had significantly lower anxiety sensitivity scores at post-treatment than the wait-list control group. We also examined change in anxiety sensitivity from pre- to post-treatment in refe

Development of a competency-based curriculum for training women in breast self-examination skills.

It is expected that there will be 178,700 new cases of breast cancer diagnosed in American women during 1998. This corresponds to a new breast cancer diagnosis every 3 minutes. In the absence of any preventive measures at this time, control of breast cancer morbidity and mortality must be sought through early detection and treatment. A competency-based training curriculum in breast self-examination was developed that incorporated three specific skill components: a systematic pattern of search; palpation topography discrimination training; and use of appropriate finger pressure for examination.
