Prolonged Grief Disorder (PGD) is distinct from yet related to non-pathologic grief, depression, addiction, and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) with a prevalence of up to 10% in bereaved populations. Hallmarks of PGD include functional impairment a year or more post-bereavement and intense yearning for the deceased. Current treatments for PGD are typically psychological rather than psychopharmacological, and more treatment options are needed. Psychedelics such as psilocybin and MDMA may be a promising treatment avenue for PGD. Randomized clinical trials demonstrated the efficacy of psilo

Research indicates that post-bereavement coping strategies can be adaptive or maladaptive. Understanding which strategies lead to poorer outcomes is an important clinical and theoretical question with the potential to guide intervention. The Oxford Grief - Coping Strategies scale was developed from interviews with bereaved people with and without prolonged grief disorder (PGD) to assess the frequency of maladaptive cognitive and behavioural strategies after bereavement. Factorial and psychometric validity were assessed using exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis (N = 676). A three-wave

BACKGROUND: Bereaved people experience distinct trajectories of prolonged-grief-disorder (PGD) symptoms. A few studies from outside critical care investigated limited factors of PGD-symptom trajectories without a theoretical framework. We aimed to characterize factors associated with ICU bereaved surrogates' PGD-symptom trajectories, drawing from the integrative framework of predictors for bereavement outcomes, emphasizing factors modifiable by ICU care.
METHODS: Prospective cohort study of 291 family surrogates. Multinomial logistic regression was used to determine associations of three prev

Should pathological grief be viewed as a nosological category, separate from other forms of mental diseases? Diagnostic criteria for "Prolonged Grief Disorder" (PGD) have recently been specified by Prigerson and her coworkers. We interviewed a total of 40 widows who had lost their husbands during the Rwandan genocide in 1994. We assessed Major Depression using the Mini-International Neuropsychiatric Interview (M.I.N.I.) and prolonged grief reactions with the PG-13. In order to examine the distinctiveness of the two syndromes we performed a multitrait correlational matrix analysis using modifie

Bereavement can present significant challenges for university students, yet the proportion at risk of prolonged grief disorder (PGD) remains unclear. This study examined the proportion at risk of PGD and associated factors among Chinese university students. Using an online survey administered to bereaved university students in mainland China (N = 948), 424 students (Mage=21.60, 56.1% female) reported a significant loss for more than 12 months. Chi-squared and t-tests were used to examine associations between PGD risk and related factors. Results showed 14.2% of the sample were at high risk of

BACKGROUND: Prolonged grief disorder (PGD) is a multidimensional condition with adverse health consequences. We hypothesized that enhanced negative emotional bias characterizes this disorder and underlies its key clinical symptoms.
METHODS: In a cross-sectional design, chronically grieving older adults (age 61.5 ± 8.9 years) experiencing probable PGD (n = 33) were compared with demographic- and time since loss-equated integrated (adaptive) grief participants (n = 38). To probe generalized negative affective reactivity, participants performed an emotional face-matching task during functional m

BACKGROUND: Recognition that the loss of a loved one may result in prolonged grief disorder (PGD) has gained broad attention recently. PGD may disturb daily functioning to such a degree that mental health treatment is required. Because PGD symptoms often resemble symptoms of common mental disorders (CMD) such as anxiety, depressive, and post-traumatic stress disorder, clinicians may not consider a PGD diagnosis. Moreover, cultural varieties in expression of PGD may complicate recognition. This study explores the prevalence of PGD among both natives and refugees with anxiety, depressive, or tra

Prolonged grief disorder (PGD) is a recognized distinct mental health disorder in the DSM-5-TR and ICD-11, characterized by core symptoms such as longing for and preoccupation with the deceased that persist and worsen over time. Family members and caregivers of patients that receive end-of-life care are confronted with imminent bereavement, which emphasizes the importance of bereavement care as a preventive measure and the need for continued support after death beyond the hospital setting. This review discusses bereaved family members' and caregivers' risk factors of developing PGD, screening

Background: Prolonged Grief Disorder (PGD) affects a significant minority of bereaved individuals and is associated with persistent distress, comorbidity, and functional impairment. Access to evidence-based treatment remains limited. This study introduces and evaluates Internet Cognitive Therapy for Prolonged Grief (iCT-PG), a therapist-assisted digital intervention adapted from iCT-PTSD.Objective: To assess preliminary feasibility, acceptability, and clinical outcomes of iCT-PG, and to examine changes in key cognitive maintenance mechanisms of PGD (memory characteristics, negative appraisals,

The COVID-19 pandemic raised fears about a rise in prolonged grief rates. To determine if these fears are justified, we examined an online sample of 329 Turkish adults for their level of prolonged grief symptoms (as well as probable Prolonged Grief Disorder-PGD) and associated factors in relation to losses during the pandemic. Respondents completed measures of prolonged grief, post-traumatic stress disorder, and depression. Overall, 10% of participants reported symptoms indicating a probable PGD diagnosis. Surprisingly, loss due to COVID-19 or disruption of the natural mourning process did not

Narrative reconstruction is a time-limited integrative therapy, originally developed in the context of post-traumatic stress disorder and adjusted for the treatment of prolonged grief disorder (PGD). It consists of exposure to the loss memory and narrating a detailed written reconstruction of it. In this paper, we describe narrative reconstruction interventions and modifications for the treatment of PGD as well as the underlying mechanisms of change including integration of the loss episode into the life narrative. A case demonstration of narrative reconstruction with a patient with PGD presen

This letter discusses the current challenge in classification and treatment of DSM-5-TR prolonged grief disorder. Prolonged grief disorder (PGD) is among the new mental disorders included in the DSM-5-TR section II, a chapter about trauma and stressor-related disorders. By definition, PGD is a maladaptive response to the death of a loved one characterized by a period of at least 12 months of persistent yearning for or preoccupation with the deceased and disabling symptoms such as disbelief about the death, avoidance, emotional numbness, identity disruption, intense emotional pain, loneliness,

This study aimed to validate the Swedish version of the Prolonged Grief Disorder-13 tool (PG-13) by examining its psychometric properties, including factor structure, discriminant and concurrent validity. The PG-13 was assessed in a sample of Swedish parents who had lost a child to cancer 1-5 years previously. The sample included 225 parents (133 mothers and 92 fathers) with a mean age of 46.02 years (SD = 8.15) and 16.0% met the criteria for Prolonged Grief Disorder (PGD). A principal component analysis was performed, and the results supported a one-factor structure of the PG-13. The PG-13 wa

BACKGROUND: Prolonged Grief Disorder (PGD) in later life may involve volumetric patterns indicative of accelerated brain aging. This study examined whether structural brain age differs between individuals with PGD and those with integrated grief (IG), and whether it is associated with clinical severity.
METHODS: Chronically grieving older adults with PGD (n = 36) and IG (n = 56), equated on demographics and time since loss, underwent structural MRI. Machine learning-derived indices were computed for each participant: Brain Age Gap (SPARE-BAG), Alzheimer's disease-like atrophy (SPARE-AD), and

CONTEXT: While most bereaved can navigate a death-related loss, some face persistent and disabling challenges, a condition known as Prolonged Grief Disorder (PGD). Early identification of PGD can prevent adverse health outcomes. The effectiveness of healthcare providers' clinical intuition versus relatives' self-report surveys in estimating the risk of developing PGD remains uncertain.
OBJECTIVES: The study evaluates the accuracy of healthcare providers' subjective risk estimates and self-reported surveys from relatives, conducted close to the cancer patient's death, in predicting ICD-11 PGD

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: Bereaved ICU family surrogates' psychological distress, e.g., anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), is usually examined independently, despite the well-recognized comorbidity of these symptoms. Furthermore, the few studies exploring impact of psychological distress on development of prolonged grief disorder (PGD) did not consider the dynamic impact of symptom evolution. We identified surrogates' distinct patterns/states of comorbid psychological distress and their evolution over the first 3 months of bereavement and evaluated their associations w

INTRODUCTION: Studies of effective psychotherapy for individuals suffering from the effects of prolonged grief disorder (PGD) are scarce. This paper describes the protocol for an evaluation of a metacognitive therapy programme designed specifically for PGD, to reduce the psychological distress and loss of functioning resulting from bereavement.
METHODS AND ANALYSIS: The proposed trial comprises three phases. Phase 1 consists of a review of the literature and semistructured interviews with key members of the target population to inform the development of a metacognitive therapy programme for P

BACKGROUND: After loss, prolonged grief disorder (PGD), posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, and anxiety often co-occur, intensifying distress. Correlates of these patterns remain understudied, as most work omits anxiety, uses cross-sectional designs, or focuses on fixed factors. Modifiable ICU end-of-life care factors are largely overlooked despite global calls for improvement.
OBJECTIVES: To examine factors associated with states of PGD, PTSD, depression, and anxiety, emphasizing modifiable ICU end-of-life care over 2 bereavement years.
DESIGN: Prospective cohort study.

Prolonged Grief Disorder (PGD) was recently added to ICD-11 and DSM-5-TR. Depression and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) are frequent comorbidities, but findings regarding comorbid somatoform disorder and personality disorders remain mixed and studies with severely impaired patients are scarce. It was therefore the objective of the present study to examine comorbidities of PGD in a bereaved inpatient psychiatric sample. We assessed N = 101 bereaved inpatients in a psychiatric hospital with clinical interviews and self-report questionnaires. We calculated differences between patients with
