Mini-HoLEP (MILEP) vs HoLEP: a propensity score-matched analysis.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Minimal invasiveness improves outcome in many surgical fields including urology. We aimed to assess intraoperative performance and clinical outcome of miniaturized holmium laser enucleation of prostate (MiLEP) (22FR). METHODS: We ran a propensity score-matched analysis among all consecutive laser enucleations of prostate performed between 9/2022 and 2/2023. It resulted in two matched comparison groups: MiLEP 22 FR (n = 40) and holmium laser enucleation of prostate (HoLEP 26 Fr) (n = 40). Statistical analysis was performed. RESULTS: MiLEP was associated with significan

Primary Pericardial Mesothelioma: A Population-Based Propensity Score-Matched Analysis.

Primary pericardial mesothelioma is a rare malignancy of the mesothelial lining of the pericardium. This study aimed to evaluate the clinical characteristics and survival outcomes of these patients using a United States population-based cancer database. We queried the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results program (1973-2015). Primary pericardial mesothelioma patients with complete follow-up data were included, and primary pleural mesothelioma patients were identified as controls. Propensity-score matching was used to balance individual characteristics. Kaplan-Meier analysis and log-rank

Robotic versus port-access mitral repair: A propensity score analysis.

BACKGROUND: Port-access (PORT) and robotic (ROBO) mitral repair are well established, but differences in patient selection and outcomes are not well documented. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was performed on 129 ROBO and 628 PORT mitral repairs at one institution. ROBO patients had 4 cm nonrib spreading incisions with robotic assistance, while PORT patients had 6-8 cm rib spreading incisions with thoracoscopic assistance. Propensity score analysis matched patients for differences in baseline characteristics. RESULTS: Unmatched ROBO patients were younger (58 ± 11 vs. 61 ± 13, p = .05), ha

Hematological indices in renovascular hypertension: A propensity score matching analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Various hematological blood count parameters, including the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and mean platelet volume (MPV), were analyzed to assess differences in patients with renovascular (RVH) and essential hypertension (EH). METHODS: A propensity score analysis was performed to match 51 patients with RVH and 173 patients with EH. After matching, 49 pairs of patients were compared. RESULTS: Before matching, patients with RVH had significantly higher NLR values [1.35 (range: 1.14-1.76) vs. 1.05 (range: 0.81-1.3); p<0.001] and MPV [8.7 fL (range: 8.3-9.5 fL) vs. 8.4 fL (rang

Robotic versus laparoscopic adrenalectomy: a propensity-score matched retrospective study.

INTRODUCTION: Laparoscopic adrenalectomy is the standard minimally invasive approach for adrenal tumors, and robotic-assisted surgery has increasingly been adopted as an alternative. Comparative studies have not consistently demonstrated superiority of either technique, and most are limited by confounding by indication, as robotic programs are introduced after laparoscopic practice is already established. We compared perioperative outcomes between robotic and laparoscopic adrenalectomy at a single center using propensity-score matching to reduce this confounding. METHODS: This retrospective,

Propensity score analysis for health care disparities: a deweighting approach.

BACKGROUND: Propensity score weighting is a useful tool to make causal or unconfounded comparisons between groups. According to the definition by the Institute of Medicine (IOM), estimates of health care disparities should be adjusted for health-status factors but not for socioeconomic status (SES) variables. There have been attempts to use propensity score weighting to generate estimates that are concordant with IOM's definition. However, the existing propensity score methods do not preserve SES distributions in minority and majority groups unless SES variables are independent of health statu

Early childhood hospitalization and problematic behaviors: A propensity score analysis.

Existing research suggests that children who experience poverty and hospitalization in early childhood are at risk of developing behavior problems. We examined whether the association between early childhood hospitalization and children's internalizing and externalizing behaviors were moderated by family poverty status and child sex. Participants included 224 children from the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development Study of Early Child Care and Youth Development. There was no direct association between hospitalization and problematic behaviors. Poverty status during early chi

Spouse bereavement and brain pathologies: A propensity score matching study.

AIM: Spouse bereavement is one of life's greatest stresses and has been suggested to trigger or accelerate cognitive decline and dementia. However, little information is available about the potential brain pathologies underlying the association between spouse bereavement and cognitive decline. We aimed to investigate that lifetime spouse bereavement is associated with in vivo human brain pathologies underlying cognitive decline. METHODS: A total of 319 ever-married older adults between the ages of 61 and 90 years underwent comprehensive clinical assessments and multimodal brain imaging includ

Preventing epilepsy after traumatic brain injury: A propensity score analysis.

BACKGROUND: Due to the potential consequences of post-traumatic epilepsy (PTE) exacerbating secondary injury following traumatic brain injury (TBI), the use of antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) is an accepted option for seizure prophylaxis. However, there is only a paucity of data that can be found regarding outcomes surrounding the use of AEDs. The purpose of this retrospective study is to evaluate whether the prophylactic administration of AEDs significantly decreased the incidence of PTE, when considering the severity of TBI. METHODS: All trauma patients who had been newly diagnosed with TBI from

Relative Performance of Propensity Score Matching Strategies for Subgroup Analyses.

Postapproval drug safety studies often use propensity scores (PSs) to adjust for a large number of baseline confounders. These studies may involve examining whether treatment safety varies across subgroups. There are many ways a PS could be used to adjust for confounding in subgroup analyses. These methods have trade-offs that are not well understood. We conducted a plasmode simulation to compare relative performance of 5 methods involving PS matching for subgroup analysis, including methods frequently used in applied literature whose performance has not been previously directly compared. Thes

Application of a propensity score to adjust for channelling bias with NSAIDs.

PURPOSE: To compare the relative risks of upper GI haemorrhage (UGIH) in users of Newer versus Older, non-specific NSAIDs when adjusted for channelling bias by regression on individual covariates, a propensity score and both. METHODS: Cohort study of patients prescribed NSAIDs between June 1987 and January 2000. Exposure to Newer and Older non-specific NSAIDs was identified, and risk factors evaluated for each patient. Results of multiple covariate analyses and the propensity scoring technique to assess potential channelling bias in comparisons between Newer and Older non-specific NSAIDs were

Parametric and nonparametric propensity score weighting analysis with subgroup covariate balance.

Estimating the causal treatment effects by subgroups is important in observational studies when the treatment effect heterogeneity is present. Existing propensity score methods rely on a correctly specified propensity score model. Model misspecification results in biased treatment effect estimation and covariate imbalance. We proposed a method for the propensity score analysis with controlled subgroup balance (G-SBPS) to achieve covariate mean balance in all subgroups. We further incorporated nonparametric kernel regression for the propensity scores and developed a kernelized G-SBPS (kG-SBPS)

Implantable cardioverter-defibrillator in cardiac sarcoidosis: A propensity-score matched analysis.

BACKGROUND: Implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICDs) are used in cardiac sarcoidosis (CS) to prevent sudden cardiac death, but real-world effectiveness remains uncertain and is vulnerable to treatment-selection bias. METHODS: We performed a retrospective cohort study using the TriNetX Global Collaborative Network (157 healthcare organisations). Adults (≥18 years) with CS (ICD-10-CM D86.85; 2005-2025) were stratified by ICD implantation. Cohorts were balanced using 1:1 propensity-score matching (caliper 0.1 SD) across demographic, comorbidity, laboratory, and medication variables. The pr

Nocturnal hypertension and cardiovascular events: risk analysis using propensity score matching.

BACKGROUND: Nocturnal hypertension (NHT) is associated with major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) and heart failure (HF), and remains an area of growing interest, with evidence suggesting a differential impact compared to daytime hypertension (DTH). OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the relationship between NHT and the risk of cardiovascular events, independently of daytime blood pressure. METHODS: We conducted an observational study based on a continuous registry of patients who underwent ambulatory blood pressure monitoring at a tertiary care center. Propensity score matching (1:1) was applied

Radiotherapy for Vestibular Schwannoma: Retrospective Cohort and Propensity Score Matching Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Surgery and stereotactic radiotherapy (SRT) are widely used for treating vestibular schwannomas (VS), but the impact of different SRT regimens remains debated. This study assesses outcomes of various SRT techniques in a large cohort. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Retrospective cohort of consecutive patients treated in a large academic hospital between 2008 and 2024. All patients were treated with LINAC-based SRT. The study compared outcomes between single-dose SRS (12-15 Gy), five-fraction SRS (total of 25 Gy), and conventionally fractionated SRT (50.4 Gy in 28 fractions). The main outco
