BACKGROUND: Proprioception can be affected by many factors including exercise. Most exercises involve certain degrees of repeated passive movements, and different velocities of these movements might affect proprioception differently. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the influences of different angular velocities of repeated passive movement on knee proprioception via active repositioning and kinesthesia measurement.
METHODS: A quasi-experimental design with repeated measure on movement velocity (0°/s, 2°/s, 90°/s, and 150°/s). Sixteen healthy young adults participated in the study. A

This study determined knee joint proprioception in below-knee amputees using two methods of measurement of knee joint proprioception. The threshold for detection of passive motion and the ability to reproduce specific limb positions were recorded in nine below-knee amputees. A significant difference was observed between the prosthetic and sound limbs in the amputees in the threshold of detection test. The large angles (5 degrees to 25 degrees) involved in position reproduction tests may have provided cues through the cuff suspension. Different strategies are used by below-knee amputees to disc

In brief: Twelve members of a professional ballet company were evaluated for laxity of the knee joint. They also underwent a test of knee joint position sense. A group of 12 healthy, active, age-matched controls were similarly tested. All of the dancers met the criteria for loose joints, while only one of the control group had loose joints. In the test of joint position sense the dancers did consistently worse than controls (p <.03) and showed a significant tendency to overestimate the angle to which their knee joint had been passively moved. The authors concluded that decreased position sense

Proprioception, the perception of limb position in space, is derived from afferent signals originating primarily from musculotendinous and joint receptors. Proprioception is critical to the maintenance of joint stability. Studies have demonstrated that proprioception is less accurate in patients with knee osteoarthritis versus elderly control subjects, in healthy older versus younger subjects, and in the setting of other conditions affecting the knee including anterior cruciate ligament deficiency and hypermobility syndrome. Possible pathways between proprioceptive inaccuracy, knee osteoarthri

This study aimed to provide information on proprioception alterations in lymphedema-affected limbs. Blindfolded subjects sat at a table with their forearms positioned on paddles. The hinges of the paddles were aligned with the elbow joint and an electronic goniometer was positioned to measure the angle of the forearm. Paddles were moved by an electric servomotor with a slow angular speed that was barely appreciated by the subjects. Subjects were then asked to guess the position of the affected arm in comparison with the unaffected arm to study the position sense of the lymphedema-affected arm.

Proprioceptive mechanoreceptors provide neural feedback for position in space and are critical for three-dimensional interaction. Proprioception is decreased with osteoarthritis of the knees, which leads to increased risk of falling. As the prevalence of osteoarthritis increases so does the need for total knee arthroplasty (TKA), and knowing the effect of TKA on proprioception is essential. This article reviews the literature regarding proprioception and its relationship to balance, aging, osteoarthritis, and the effect of TKA on proprioception. Knee arthroplasty involving retention of the cru

The purpose of the present study was to investigate whether exercise-induced quadriceps muscle damage affects knee proprioception such as joint position sense (JPS), force sense and the threshold to detect passive movement (TTDPM). Fourteen young men performed sets of eccentric quadriceps contractions at a target of 60% of the maximal concentric peak torque until exhaustion; the exercise was interrupted whenever the subject could not complete two sets. Muscle soreness, JPS, the TTDPM and force sense were examined before the exercise as well as one, 24, 48, 72 and 96 h after exercise. The resul

PURPOSE: Because monopolar radiofrequency energy has a denaturing effect on the glenohumeral joint capsule during thermal capsulorraphy, we hypothesized that thermal treatment would have a deleterious effect on the mechanoreceptors present within the capsule, thereby affecting proprioception and function. The purpose of this study was to evaluate proprioception and function following thermal capsulorraphy.
TYPE OF STUDY: Case series.
METHODS: Twenty subjects (13 male, 7 female) diagnosed with unilateral anterior, anteroinferior, or multidirectional glenohumeral instability with no significan

Purpose of this study was the evaluation of distribution and morphology of mechanoreceptors in the glenohumeral joint capsule and rotator cuff in comparison to the coracoacromial ligament by means of specific immunfluorescence microscopy. The complemente joint capsules, rotator cuffs and coracoacromial ligaments of three fresh cadaver shoulder were harvested. Serial cryostate sections were taken and alternately incubated with antiserum against neurofilament, lamin or myelin of peripheral nerves. The antibody-reaction was visualized with fluorescin Ig-G. The nerve endings were photographed and

Proprioception was quantified in a group of patients who had documented complete ACL tears. Threshold to detection of passive change in position of the knee was measured using a well-described test. Eleven patients with arthroscopically proven complete ACL tears and findings consistent with moderate to severe anterolateral rotatory instability were tested. Testing was done within the 30 degrees to 40 degrees range of knee flexion. Patients were blindfolded and the injured and uninjured knees were tested in random sequence so that the normal knee could serve as an internal control. Testing was

The objective of this study was to analyze the proprioceptive innervation of human lips, especially of the orbicularis oris muscle, since it is classically accepted that facial muscles lack typical proprioceptors, that is, muscle spindles, but recently this has been doubted. Upper and lower human lips (n = 5) from non-embalmed frozen cadavers were immunostained for detection of S100 protein (to identify nerves and sensory nerve formations), myosin heavy chain (to label muscle fibers within muscle spindles), and the mechano-gated ion channel PIEZO2. No muscle spindles were found, but there was

The ascending pathway mediating proprioception from the orofacial region is still not fully known. The present study elucidated the relay of jaw-closing muscle spindle (JCMS) inputs from brainstem to thalamus in rats. We injected an anterograde tracer into the electrophysiologically identified supratrigeminal nucleus (Su5), known to receive JCMS input. Many thalamic axon terminals were labeled and were found mainly contralaterally in a small, unpredicted area of the caudo-ventromedial edge (VPMcvm) of ventral posteromedial thalamic nucleus (VPM). Electrical stimulation of the masseter nerve an

This doctoral thesis focuses on brain activity in response to proprioceptive stimulation in schizophrenia. The works encompass methodological developments substantiated by investigations of healthy volunteers and two clinical studies of schizophrenia spectrum patients. American psychiatrist Sandor Rado (1890-1972) suggested that one of two un-reducible deficits in schizophrenia was a disorder of proprioception. Exploration of proprioceptive information processing is possible through the measurement of evoked and event related potentials. Event related EEG can be analyzed as conventional time-s

BACKGROUND: To better personalize treatment and monitor recovery of individuals with low back pain, objective tests of sensorimotor functions, such as lumbar proprioception, must be selected based on their reliability and validity. The primary objective of this study was to test the concurrent validity of three measures of lumbar proprioception.
METHODS: Thirty-one participants performed three lumbar proprioception tests (motion perception threshold, active and passive joint positioning sense), a whole-body mobility and balance (time up-and-go) and two trunk-specific postural control (thresho

Conflicting results on the effects of occlusal proprioceptive information on standing sway have been reported in the literature, partly due to the heterogeneity of the occlusal criterion studied and the experimental protocol used. In this study, occlusal functions, different mandibular positions and visual conditions were used to investigate the involvement of occlusal proprioception information in static postural balance. Postural adjustments of 26 healthy young adults, divided into Class I malocclusion and Class I normocclusion groups, were studied in upright position, in five mandibular pos

To control our actions efficiently, our brain represents our body based on a combination of visual and proprioceptive cues, weighted according to how (un)reliable-how precise-each respective modality is in a given context. However, perceptual experiments in other modalities suggest that the weights assigned to sensory cues are also modulated "top-down" by attention. Here, we asked whether during action, attention can likewise modulate the weights (i.e., precision) assigned to visual versus proprioceptive information about body position. Participants controlled a virtual hand (VH) via a data gl

PURPOSE: Hyperthermia has been shown to affect both central and peripheral nervous systems. However, the consequences of these alterations on the proprioceptive mechanisms underlying human movement control remain unclear. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of passive hyperthermia on various measures of proprioception and balance, two key components of injury prevention and movement efficiency.
METHODS: After a familiarization session, 14 volunteers (8 males, 6 females) completed two experimental sessions in temperate (CON, 24°C) and hot (HOT, 44°C-50°C) conditions, in a count

BACKGROUND: Taping is a common technique to treat inversion ankle sprains, but the effects of tape on proprioception are still not clear. The purpose of this study was to establish whether proprioception would be modified by the use of ankle tape. To do so we studied joint position sense (JPS) in healthy volunteers using three-dimensional (3D) movement analysis systems.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Forty healthy volunteers (mean age and SD = 23.2 ± 4.2) were asked to actively reproduce four different ankle positions: 10 degrees of dorsiflexion, neutral, 10 degrees and 20 degrees of plantarflexion. T

OBJECTIVE: To test the hypothesis that treatment of the osteoarthritic knee with intraarticular hyaluronan may improve proprioception.
METHODS: Forty-six patients with unilateral osteoarthritis of the knee were recruited for this study from primary care clinics in the Department of Family Medicine at the University of Western Ontario. Inclusion required (1) the presence of pain with activities of daily function and (2) radiographic confirmation of medial compartment osteoarthritis. Proprioception was measured with an electrogoniometer attached to the study knee. Subjects performed an angle re
