The effectiveness of the prostaglandin F analogue fluprostenol in inducing labour in the mare was examined by giving sequential injections over the last 50 days of gestation. The behavioural and endocrine changes elicited by the drug in pregnant and non-pregnant animals and in foals were also studied. To determine the practicability of administering 15(S)-15-methyl-prostaglandin F2alpha-tromethamine (15(S)-15-Me-PGF2alpha) intra-amniotically for the induction of midtrimester abortion, initially 2.5 mg. of 15(S)-15-Me-PGF2alpha was administered to 20 physically healthy gravid women, and was repeated after 24 hours in those patients who had not aborted. We describe a female patient with a history of primary open-angle glaucoma who, following treatment with topical latanoprost, a synthetic prostaglandin F2 alpha analog, developed hypertrichosis of the eyelashes. Hypertrichosis, a recently described side effect of latanoprost--together with iridal pigmentation--represents a potentially permanent cosmetic side effect associated with the use of this highly effective intraocular pressure-lowering agent. The molecular mechanism underlying latanoprost-induced hypertrichosis is unknown.

An experiment was designed to determine if the analogue of prostaglandin F2 alpha, cloprostenol, at a dose sufficient to cause luteolysis, was lactogenic in cattle. The mammary glands of eight Friesian heifers were developed by treatment with progesterone plus oestrogen.
