OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to determine the precision of the measurements of 2 craniometric anatomic points--glabella and anterior nasal spine--in order to verify their possibility as potential locations for placing implants aimed at nasal prostheses retention.
METHODS: Twenty-six dry human skulls were scanned in a high-resolution spiral tomography with 1-mm axial slice thickness and 1-mm interval reconstruction using a bone tissue filter. Images obtained were stored and transferred to an independent workstation containing e-film imaging software. The measurements (in the glabella

We compared patient outcome after total knee arthroplasties with two types of low-contact-stress (LCS) cementless implants: a meniscal-bearing implant that retained the posterior cruciate ligament (n = 147), and a rotating-platform implant requiring sacrifice of this ligament (n = 44). The minimum follow-up was 5 years (mean, 68.5 months). Pain was occasional or nonexistent at follow-up in 94.6% of patients with meniscal-bearing implants and 93.2% of patients with rotating-platform implants. The mean total range of motion was 120 degrees for patients with meniscal-bearing implants and 108 degr

BACKGROUND: Patients treated for early prosthetic joint infection (PJI) with surgical debridement, prosthesis retention and biofilm-active antibiotics, such as rifampicin or fluoroquinolones have a rate of successful infection eradication that is similar to patients treated with the traditional approach of prosthesis exchange. It is therefore important to consider other outcomes after PJI treatment that may influence management decisions, such as function, quality of life (QOL) and treatment-associated complications.
AIMS: To describe rates of successful treatment for patients with PJI underg

INTRODUCTION: Urological emergencies represent 7% of admissions, 29% of which are acute urine retention. We report the first results of a protocol evaluating a new device in case of failure of self-catheterization, replacing a permanent catheter: the urethral device EXIME®.
METHOD: Intention-to-treat study on the feasibility of inserting the EXIME® prosthesis in a day hospital after simple urethral gel instillation in men with urine retention. EXIME® was proposed to all patients after failure of Foley catheter removal and refusal or inability to learn self-catheterization. The protocol was re

BACKGROUND: Debridement, antibiotics, and implant retention (DAIR) is a treatment option for selected patients who have periprosthetic joint infection and well-fixed prostheses. The KLIC (Kidney, Liver, Index Surgery, Cemented Prosthesis, C-reactive Protein) score has been developed to aid in patient selection, but it is unclear if it does so reliably. We aimed to externally validate the KLIC score in a cohort of patients who have early and late acute periprosthetic joint infection.
METHODS: Retrospective data were used from five sites across four countries. In total, 199 had an infected hip

The design of orbital prosthesis to rehabilitate patients with orbital exenteration depends on the underlying clinical condition, material chosen for prosthesis, method of retention of the prosthesis, and and preference of the patient. Rehabilitation of a patient with orbital exenteration due to mucormycosis has been described by fabricating a prosthesis that used polymethyl methacrylate (to fabricate a conformer) and silicone material (to fabricate prosthetic superstructure). The two-component prosthesis was designed to attain dual mechanical retention using an anatomic undercut (conformer) a

Residual ridge resorption (RRR) is an inevitable physiological process occurring after the extraction of teeth. The annual rate of resorption is thought to be more in the mandible as compared to the maxilla leading to loss of support and retention in the mandibular conventional prosthesis. The compromised retention and stability of conventional dentures in the mandible lead to the denial of a patient to wear the prosthesis. Rehabilitation of resorbed ridges using implant-supported prosthesis has led to enhanced retention and an increase in chewing efficiency, leading to better acceptance of pr

This clinical report describes the management of the retention of an orbital prosthesis in a patient with uncontrolled diabetes. The patient, who underwent left orbital exenteration subsequent to severe mucormycosis, posed a challenge for implant placement and for use of adhesives as a method of retention because of the high likelihood of reinfection. Inaccessibility to severe anatomic undercuts along with their arbitrary block out would have caused diminished retention. As a result, an orbital prosthesis composed of a digitally produced hollow conformer and traditionally produced silicone pro

Objective.Prosthesis control can be seen as a new skill to be learned. To enhance learning, both internal and augmented feedback are exploited. The latter represents external feedback sources that can be designed to enhance learning, e.g. biofeedback. Previous research has shown that augmented feedback protocols can be designed to induce retention by adhering to the guidance hypothesis, but it is not clear yet if that also results in transfer of those skills to prosthesis control. In this study, we test if a training paradigm optimised for retention allows for the transfer of myoelectric skill

Ectodermal dysplasia is a rare congenital disease that affects several structures of ectodermal origin. The most commonly related oral characteristics are hypodontia, malformed teeth and underdeveloped alveolar ridges. New alternative treatments are needed due to the failure of the conventional prosthesis retention. This case report outlines the oral rehabilitation treatment of a 9-year-old girl with ectodermal dysplasia. The treatment was performed with conventional prosthesis upon mini-implants. The mini-implants provided prosthetic retention. The patient reported a good adaptation of the de

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Facial prostheses restore esthetics and improve the quality of life for individuals with complex facial defects associated with tumors, trauma, inflammation, cysts, and congenital abnormalities. Despite advances in silicone materials and 3- and 4-dimensional (3D and 4D) modeling technologies, the stable retention of facial prostheses-especially in mobile facial regions-remains a clinical challenge that compromises both function and user satisfaction. While 4D facial expression-based modeling improves fit, individual factors such as skin viscoelasticity may influence reten

Orbital exenteration performed to treat various neoplasms or nonmalignant diseases results in functional, aesthetic, and psychological issues for the patients. If reconstructive surgery is not possible or not desired by the patient, an orbital prosthesis is an excellent choice for cosmetic and psychological rehabilitation. An orbital prosthesis is aesthetic, durable, long lasting, cost-effective, and most importantly retentive. The present case report describes the rehabilitation of an orbital exenteration postsquamous cell carcinoma using a two-part prosthesis, in which retention is achieved

BACKGROUND: Since 1972, patients with large nasal perforations, who were symptomatic, and who were not candidates for surgery, had the option of custom prosthetic closure at Mayo Clinic. Although septal prostheses have helped many patients, 27% of pre-1982 patients chose not to keep the prosthesis in place. Two-dimensional computed tomography (CT) sizing resulted in more of the patients choosing to retain the prosthesis. The introduction of three-dimensional (3-D) printing to the sizing process offered the potential of further improved retention by refinement in prosthesis fit.

Loss of a sense organ, such as an eye in situations of orbital involvement, or any other bodily part, such as the maxilla or palate, might make one more dependent on others for care and affect how they perceive themselves in society. The prosthetic rehabilitation of large mid-facial defects is a challenging task due to the varied size and shape of the defect. Confluent maxillary and orbital abnormalities are best restored with prosthetic means by creating a comfortable, aesthetically pleasing prosthesis that allows for the restoration of speech, deglutition, and mastication. The retention of a

Obturator prosthesis is a common treatment method for maxillectomy patients for maintaining their oronasal separation and resuming their social lives. After tumor resection, the remaining anatomical structures have a significant effect on prosthesis retention. The present study describes the rehabilitation of two maxillectomy patients after cancer surgery using a prosthesis consisting of a denture and a special retentive obturator that is positioned in the anatomical undercuts of the nasal cavity. These patients have undergone total and subtotal maxillectomy surgery after the diagnosis of squa

Rehabilitation of maxillofacial defect patients is a challenging task. The most common prosthetic treatment problem with such patients is, getting adequate retention, stability, and support. In cases of large maxillofacial defect, movement of the prosthesis is inevitable. The primary objectives in rehabilitating the maxillofacial defect patients are to restore the function of mastication, deglutition, speech, and to achieve normal orofacial appearance. This clinical report describes maxillofacial prosthetic rehabilitation of large midfacial defect including orbit along with its contents, zygom

The hand is associated with both form and function. The loss of a body part, such as a finger or a partial hand, has a profound psychological impact on the patient and significantly reduces their quality of life. A precisely fitting hand prosthesis or complex finger prosthesis can significantly improve function by restoring esthetics, normal length, and function to a great extent, as well as protecting the remnant sensitive stump (if lost due to amputation). Based on their functional capabilities, several types of hand prostheses can be designed, including passive, externally powered, hybrid,
