It is the aim of this paper to give a few examples of dogmas related to prosthodontics and oral implants and to discuss the controversial role of occlusion in the aetiology of temporomandibular disorders. New knowledge is developing at a rapidly increasing rate in dentistry, as in other areas of society. Our lecturers at university taught us many useful things. But, as time goes by, what is still relevant? Some methods are so well established that they deserve to be called dogmas. It is implied that a dogma is not supported by strong evidence, even though it has existed and been practised for

Different reasons can contribute to classifying dental prosthesis wearers as high-risk individuals in relation to dental biofilm accumulation. These include a past history of oral disease, age and additional retentive areas. Other common complaints include inflammation and halitosis. Moreover, prosthesis replacement and prosthetic pillar loss are generally associated with caries and periodontal disease recurrence. Therefore, the present study undertook to make a critical review of the literature, aiming at discussing the main aspects related to chemical agent prescriptions for dental prosthesi

The treatment goals in prosthodontics and dental laboratory technology are to provide patients with long-term predictable and esthetic outcomes. The periodontal tissues define the framework that will maintain ridge height, thickness, color, texture, and gingival-tooth frame. The loss of teeth, residual ridge resorption and the loss of gingival tissues continue to affect long-term and esthetic treatment outcomes. Prosthodontic treatment requires consideration of the potential negative tissue effect that time and normal biologic change might have on the completed prosthetic design. This article

Associated with prosthodontic procedures, there may be the development of a chronic pain state caused by injury to peripheral branches of the trigeminal nerve. Neuropathic pains have not been discussed in the prosthodontic literature and yet are becoming increasingly common, especially in relation to the placement of implant prostheses. This article reviews the pathophysiologic and clinical features associated with neuropathic pain after dental procedures (traumatic neuralgia). The prosthodontist should become aware of neuropathic pain as a possible complication of treatment and informed conse

Surgical procedures for the prosthodontic patient have advanced greatly over the last decade. Both the aesthetics and function of the final restoration can be greatly enhanced by various surgical procedures. Some are very predictable, and others are still in the developmental stages. This review is divided into three basic categories: aesthetic root coverage; crown lengthening; and ridge augmentation procedures.

Numerous factors affect the success or failure of the various intra-osseous implants. In particular, such considerations as the implant materials, properly selected or not, preceded by careful patient screening and thorough analysis of soft and hard tissues, implant insertion conditions, oral hygiene and the overlying prostheses determine the success of the implant therapy. Among these, the final overlying prostheses serve two major purposes of restoring lost masticatory function and esthetic improvement. In addition, due to the intimate relationship with the health and remodeling of the surro

BACKGROUND: The final remaining tooth in an otherwise edentulous mouth embodies a unique intersection of biology, psychology, and identity. Beyond its limited functional role, it serves as a powerful symbol of continuity and selfhood, making its extraction an emotionally charged event for many patients.
OBJECTIVE: This narrative review explores the concept of 'Romanticising the Last Tooth', emphasising its psychosocial and clinical significance within geriatric and prosthodontic practice.
METHODS: The discussion integrates evidence on emotional attachment, bone preservation, proprioception,

This case report describes a patient with a primary concern of persistent mandibular deviation during speech who experienced clinically significant improvement (mandibular movement without deviation) after improvements to nasal resistance. At the initial consultation, temporary placement of a nasal valve dilator immediately eliminated the patient's mandibular deviation during speech, indicating the need for referral to an otolaryngologist. The patient was also provided with a dental appliance to address secondary concerns of temporomandibular joint noises and cervicofacial pain. Although the d

Historically, facial prosthetics have successfully rehabilitated individuals with acquired or congenital anatomical deficiencies of the face. This history includes extensive efforts in research and development to explore best practices in materials, methods, and artisanal techniques. Presently, extraoral maxillofacial rehabilitation is managed by a multiprofessional team that has evolved with a broadened scope of knowledge, skills, and responsibility. This includes the mandatory integration of different professional specialists to cover the bio-psycho-social needs of the patient, systemic heal

This article has presented many of the newer concepts and techniques that have been developed to treat a problem that has been of major concern to the prosthodontist: the problem of favorable periodontal support and poor or deformed edentulous ridges. In the past, dentists were not aware, or did not believe, that it was possible to reconstruct ridge deformities, and they resorted to prosthetic solutions to solve the problems of tissue reconstruction, function, and aesthetics. New procedures and concepts permit us to extend the range of therapy and hope we are able to offer our patients. It is

Because of a lack of denture retention, great difficulties are often encountered in edentulous patients who require prosthetic treatment of defects in the maxillo-facial region. The use of enossal implants may enable temporary rehabilitation with regard to mastication and speech. The possible range of indication is considerably limited in cases of extensive defects of the alveolar process, advanced atrophy and by radiological therapy of malignant tumors. The duration of therapeutic success is contingent upon most accurate implantation techniques and prosthetic treatment as well as the patient'

Acromegaly is a condition which results from an excess of growth hormone produced by the pituitary gland after epiphyseal plate closure at puberty. The most common cause of acromegaly is a benign pituitary adenoma. Acromegaly is characterised by enlargement of the hands, feet, nose and ears; expansion of the skull and pronounced brow protrusion. From an oral standpoint, the most relevant symptoms are mandibular protrusion, spacing of the lower teeth and macroglossia. A 46 year-old patient was referred to University Dental School and Hospital by her General Dental Practitioner. The patient had

Hypodontia is a relatively rare occurrence that can have a significant impact on treatment planning for those patients with the condition. This paper will describe the forms of hypodontia, as well as associated dental issues. Treatment planning considerations for children, adolescents, and adults will be presented.

Tumors of the upper aerodigestive tract (ADT) are the most frequent tumors in the world, and among the tumors of the ENT sphere, the frequency of cancers of the oral cavity occupies the third place after that of the larynx and oropharynx. The treatment of these pathologies is heavy and complex. It is the result of a combination of several interventions, namely surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy. Among the consequences of radiotherapy, we can mention the embrittlement of dental tissues, osteoradionecrosis, stenosis of muscular tissues or radiomucitis of oral mucosal tissues. All these compl

Clinical, radiographic, and histologic studies of the fovea palatini indicate that they were positioned 1.31 mm. (mean of 100 subjects) in front of the vibrating line. Radiographically and histologically, the foveae were located in soft tissue covering the hard palate in all specimens. Histologically, complex nerve endings were found just anterior to the foveae and spreading to the soft palate. The findings were related to clinical aspects of complete dentures.

In the field of prosthodontics, the use of virtual patients for biomimetic restoration holds great promise for various applications. Virtual patients consist of digitized data that encompasses details on the morphology, structure, and spatial relationships within the maxillofacial and intraoral regions. Nonetheless, there are several challenges associated with acquiring digital data, achieving accurate alignment, and recording and transferring dynamic jaw movements. This paper aims to concentrate on the process of constructing virtual patients, highlight the key and challenging aspects of virt
