Ebola Response: Modeling the Risk of Heat Stress from Personal Protective Clothing.

INTRODUCTION: A significant number of healthcare workers have responded to aid in the relief and containment of the 2013 Ebola virus disease (EVD) outbreak in West Africa. Healthcare workers are required to wear personal protective clothing (PPC) to impede the transmission of the virus; however, the impermeable design and the hot humid environment lead to risk of heat stress. OBJECTIVE: Provide healthcare workers quantitative modeling and analysis to aid in the prevention of heat stress while wearing PPC in West Africa. METHODS: A sweating thermal manikin was used to measure the thermal (Rct

Validation of the principles of injury risk zones for motorcycle protective clothing.

INTRODUCTION: The distributions of motorcycle crash impacts and injuries were compared to the four impact risk zones and protective performance specified in the European Standard for motorcycle clothing (EN 13595). METHODS: Crashed motorcyclists' (n=117) injuries and clothing damage were categorized by body area into the four risk zones. Three levels of protection were defined: protective clothing with impact protection, protective clothing only and non-protective clothing. RESULTS: The distribution of impact/injury sites corresponded to the predictions of EN 13595, with the proportion of al

Review of chamber design requirements for testing of personal protective clothing ensembles.

This review focuses on the physical requirements for conducting ensemble testing and describes the salient issues that organizations involved in the design, test, or certification of personal protective equipment (PPE) and protective clothing ensembles need to consider for strategic planning. Several current and proposed PPE ensemble test practices and standards were identified. The man-in-simulant test (MIST) is the primary procedure used by the military to evaluate clothing ensembles for protection against chemical and biological warfare agents. MIST has been incorporated into the current ed

Evaporative microclimate interval cooling reduces heat stress in thermal insulating protective clothing.

BACKGROUND: Water vapour resistance of thermal insulating protective clothing impedes sweat evaporation, the most substantial pathway of heat dissipation for working humans. Consequently, metabolic heat can increase body core temperature rapidly, which can result in life-threatening heat illnesses. The evaporative microclimate cooling method Dry Air Comfort (DAC) has been shown to be very effective for reducing the risk of heat induced illnesses. Aim of this study was to determine whether DAC can also prevent heat stress when used in intervals. METHODS: Using a balanced within-subject design

The effects of wearing protective chemical warfare combat clothing on human performance.

U.S. Department of Defense studies to measure performance decrements associated with wearing chemical warfare (CW) protective combat clothing indicate that heat stress seriously degrades human performance. Even when heat stress is not a significant factor, performance of many combat, combat support, and combat service support tasks is degraded. In most field studies, many crews of combat units became operationally ineffective due to voluntary withdrawal of individual crewmembers. Many combined arms, field studies, and laboratory studies indicate that when CW-protective combat clothing is worn

[Improving textile sun protection by regular washing of clothing].

The highest priority in the prevention of malignant tumors of the skin is given to the avoidance of sun-induced reddening of the skin and sunburn at any age. The usual recommendation is to keep out of the sun between 11 am and 3 pm, wear a sun-hat and appropriate clothing, and use a sun screen (UV-A and UV-B) that doesn't wash off on exposed skin and when in the water. With regard to the wearing of clothing protecting against UV radiation, compliance must be expected to be low, since just such protective clothing (in particularthick, densely-woven materials) is unsuitable for the summer. Contamination and release of nanomaterials associated with the use of personal protective clothing.

INTRODUCTION: We investigated nanomaterial release associated with the contamination of protective clothing during manipulation of clothing fabrics contaminated with nanoparticles. Nanomaterials, when released as airborne nanoparticles, can cause inhalation exposure which is the route of exposure of most concern to cause adverse health effects. Measurement of such nanoparticle re-suspension has not yet been conducted. Protective clothing can be contaminated with airborne nanoparticles during handling and operating processes, typically on the arms and front of the body. The contaminated clothin

UV protective textile clothing for workers exposed to natural and artificial UV radiation.

Some amounts of ultraviolet radiation are beneficial for humans but excessive exposure can cause many negative health effects to the skin and eyes and also can affect the immune system. Exposed area of skin should be covered by working clothes with low UVR transmission. It concerns both exposure to natural UV or prolonged exposure to artificial UV. This article presents some aspects of UV protective textile clothing for workers exposed to natural and artificial UV radiation. This article presents results of selected textile samples transmittances and calculated UPF and new proposed AUPF, which

Shielding properties of lead-free protective clothing and their impact on radiation doses.

The shielding properties of two different lead-free materials-tin and a compound of 80% tin and 20% bismuth-for protective clothing are compared with those of lead for three typical x-ray spectra generated at tube voltages of 60, 75, and 120 kV. Three different quantities were used to compare the shielding capability of the different materials: (1) Air-kerma attenuation factors in narrow-beam geometry, (2) air-kerma attenuation factors in broad-beam geometry, and (3) ratios of organ and effective doses in the human body for a whole-body irradiation with a parallel beam directed frontally at th

Efficacy of placing tape over glove-protective clothing interface to prevent fluid leakage.

BACKGROUND: Personal protective equipment (PPE) is crucial for healthcare personnel to protect against infections from exposure to body fluids containing bloodborne pathogens such as Ebola, HIV, Hepatitis B, and Hepatitis C. Despite advancements in PPE materials, interface regions, particularly the junction between gloves and protective clothing, remain vulnerable to fluid leakage. Although taping these interfaces is a common practice, its efficacy has not been thoroughly evaluated. This study examined the barrier performance of various tape models applied at the glove-protective clothing inte

Distribution and type of crash damage to motorcyclists' clothing: validation of the zone approach in the European Standard for motorcycle protective clothing, EN13595.

OBJECTIVE: Though the use of protective clothing reduces the risk of injury for motorcycle riders, not all protective clothing performs the same in crashes. A European Standard for motorcycle protective clothing (EN13595) was released in 2002 that specifies 4 zones in motorcycle clothing with different levels of protective qualities and 4 different test methods for assessing damage resistance. This project examined damage location and type in clothing worn by riders following a crash to establish the distribution of impact points and validate the zones described in EN13595. METHOD: Data from

Testing Penetration of Epoxy Resin and Diamine Hardeners through Protective Glove and Clothing Materials.

Efficient, comfortable, yet affordable personal protective equipment (PPE) is needed to decrease the high incidence of allergic contact dermatitis arising from epoxy resin systems (ERSs) in industrial countries. The aim of this study was to find affordable, user-friendly glove and clothing materials that provide adequate skin protection against splashes and during the short contact with ERS that often occurs before full cure. We studied the penetration of epoxy resin and diamine hardeners through 12 glove or clothing materials using a newly developed test method. The tests were carried out wit

The use of 3M porous polymer extraction discs in assessing protective clothing chemical permeation.

The aim of the study was to assess the use of 3M porous polymer extraction discs (3M Empore sorbent filters) for detection of chemical permeation of protective clothing. Analysis of some commonly used solvents on 3M Empore sorbent filters was performed for methanol, acetone, trichloroethylene (TriCE), and toluene by solvent desorption and gas chromatography. All solvents exhibited >98 percent adsorption on the filters at a spiking level of 1.8 microL for each solvent. Solvent recovery for the system was calculated for each solvent, ranging from 72-94 percent (RSD < or = 4.0%) for all solvents
