Proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy findings of a sacrococcygeal schwannoma.

Schwannoma is tumor of peripheral nerves, originating from Schwann cells. It is a rare nerve sheath tumor, which frequently occurs in the intracranial acoustic nerve and spinal nerves. We report on a 28-year-old woman who suffered from a large pelvic mass that was diagnosed to be sacrococcygeal schwannoma. The features of proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) study are discussed. The magnetic resonance imaging instrument was a 1.5 T, Gyroscan Intera with a body coil as a radiofrequency transmitter and a signal receiver. T2-weighted images were obtained under the following conditions-tur

Cerebral proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy in infantile Alexander disease.

Alexander disease (AD) is a rare genetic disorder of the central nervous system due to a dysfunction of astrocytes. The most common infantile form presents as a progressive leukodystrophy with macrocephalus. Recently, heterozygous de novo mutations in the gene encoding glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) have been demonstrated to be associated with AD. We used localized proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) to assess metabolic abnormalities in grey and white matter, basal ganglia, and cerebellum of 4 patients with infantile AD and GFAP mutations. Strongly elevated concentrations of m

Proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy in acute, juvenile anorexia nervosa.

Anorexia nervosa is usually associated with a shrinkage of the brain that is at least partially reversible with weight gain. The pathogenesis of this brain abnormality is unclear. The purpose of this study was to investigate potential alterations in localized proton magnetic resonance (1H MR) spectra of anorectic patients immediately after an interval of excessive weight loss. Twelve patients and seventeen control subjects were examined. Water suppressed 1H MR spectra were recorded from two voxels placed in the thalamus and in the parieto-occipital white matter. The spectra of ten patients cou

Proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy in Steele-Richardson-Olszewski syndrome.

Proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy, localized to the lentiform nucleus, was carried out in nine patients with a clinical diagnosis of Steele-Richardson-Olszewski syndrome (SRO) and in eight healthy age-matched controls. Three of the nine SRO patients had a so-called "eye of the tiger sign" with high signal in the globus pallidus surrounded by a ring of low signal on T2 weighted magnetic resonance imaging previously only reported in Hallervorden-Spatz disease. One of these patients had pathologically proven SRO at postmortem. The SRO group showed a significant reduction in the median concen

Proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy of a gray matter heterotopia.

We used proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy to examine resonances representing metabolites containing N-acetyl (NA) groups (predominantly N-acetyl aspartate), choline, and creatine within a large left-hemispheric gray matter heterotopia (GMH) in a 35-year-old man with corpus callosum agenesis. In contrast to normal brain tissue, including gray matter regions, heterotopic gray matter was characterized by relatively increased choline and creatine resonances and a normal NA signal. These data suggest increased cellular activity or persistent immature neuronal tissue in GMH relative to unaffect

Glutaric aciduria type 1: proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy findings.

Glutaric aciduria type 1 is an inborn error of lysine, hydroxylysine, and tryptophan metabolism caused by deficiency of glutaryl-coenzyme A dehydrogenase. The disease often appears in infancy with an encephalopathic episode that results in acute basal ganglia and white matter degeneration. The neuroimaging findings in glutaric aciduria type 1 have been well defined. However, the changes in magnetic resonance spectroscopy, a noninvasive tool for identifying the biochemical state of the brain, are scarce in glutaric aciduria type 1. This report presents the magnetic resonance spectroscopy findin

In vivo proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy of central neurocytomas.

OBJECTIVE: The authors report on the metabolic features of central neurocytomas observed during in vivo single-voxel proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy. METHODS: Volume-selective single-voxel proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy was performed with a 1.5-T unit using a point-resolved spectroscopy sequence (TR/TE = 2000 ms/135 and 270 ms) to obtain spectra of a single 8-cc voxel. The subjects were five patients in the Department of Neurosurgery of Seoul National University Hospital whose central neurocytomas had been diagnosed histologically. The peak intensities of compounds containing c

Quantitative proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy of focal brain lesions.

The diagnostic value of single-voxel proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (2 T, stimulated echo acquisition mode, TR = 6,000 ms, TE = 20 ms, 4-5 mL volumes-of-interest) was assessed for a differentiation of focal brain lesions of unknown etiology in 17 patients 1-14 years of age. Absolute metabolite concentrations were compared with age-matched control subjects and an individual control region. Most of the brain tumors were characterized by strongly reduced total N-acetylaspartyl compounds and marked increases of myo-inositol and choline-containing compounds, consistent with a lack of neuroa

Proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy in children with moyamoya disease.

Proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) is an effective method to noninvasively investigate cerebral metabolism. The aim of this study was to evaluate cerebral metabolic changes in children with Moyamoya disease using proton MRS. A total of 11 patients under 15 years old were enrolled, whose main symptoms were transient ischemic attacks. In nine patients, the more and less affected hemispheres could be determined according to their symptoms and/or single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT). A single voxel point resolved spectroscopy was performed in the frontal or parietal white m

Proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy in suspected vascular ischemic parkinsonism.

Up to now the existence of "vascular parkinsonism" has been doubtful because conclusive clinicopathologic studies are lacking. The objective of the present magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) study is to detect metabolic signs as a reflect of ischemic lesions which could be responsible for the clinical features of vascular parkinsonism. Proton MRS of the brain was performed in 12 patients suspected of vascular parkinsonism on clinical grounds and ischemic score, and in a control group of 15 patients with idiopathic Parkinson's disease. The MR spectra were measured in the striatum and deep wh

The evaluation of human breast lesions with magnetic resonance imaging and proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy.

PURPOSE: MR spectroscopy (MRS) assists in lesion characterization and diagnosis when combined with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Cancerous lesions demonstrate elevated composite choline levels arising from increased cellular proliferation. Our study investigated if MR spectroscopy of the breast would be useful for characterizing benign and malignant lesions. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Single voxel proton MR spectroscopy (MRS) was acquired as part of an MR imaging protocol in 38 patients referred upon surgical consultation. The MR spectra were read independently in a blinded fashion without th

Magnetic resonance imaging and proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy of megalencephaly and dilated Virchow-Robin spaces.

Megalencephaly with dilated Virchow-Robin spaces has been suggested to represent a new clinical entity. This report describes two males and a female who have been monitored from pregnancy. The patients manifest a relatively normal psychomotor development with some minor neurologic symptoms such as mild muscle hypotonia and clumsy motor performance. Biochemical and electrophysiologic tests were normal. In the white matter of the brain, a prominent dilatation of the Virchow-Robin spaces with some adjacent signal alterations could be demonstrated by magnetic resonance imaging. Magnetic resonance

Panencephalitic Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease. Unusual presentation of magnetic resonance imaging and proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy.

We present serial magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans on a biopsy-verified case of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD). The initial MRI scan demonstrated increased T2 signal-intensity within the basal ganglia and thalami. Subsequent MRI scans demonstrated a thin cortex, increased T2 signals diffusely within the white matter including U-fibers, and hypointense T2 signals within the basal ganglia, and thalami. Proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H-MRS) study showed an absence of creatine, choline and N-acetylaspartate signals. By these characteristic findings, serial MRI and MRS studies may

Proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy of late-life major depressive disorder.

The primary goal of this study was to examine the biochemical abnormalities of late-life major depression by using 3-tesla (3-T) proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy ((1)H-MRS). The antidepressant effects on the biochemical abnormalities were investigated as well. Study participants were 27 elderly patients with major depressive disorders (among which 9 were on antidepressant medication) and 19 comparison elderly subjects. (1)H-MRS spectra were acquired from voxels that were placed in the left frontal white matter, left periventricular white matter, and left basal ganglia. Ratios of N-acetyl

Neurochemical changes in welders revealed by proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy.

BACKGROUND: Occupational and environmental exposure to manganese (Mn) is associated with various neurobehavioral and movement dysfunctions. However, few studies have systemically examined the neurochemical effects of Mn exposure. OBJECTIVES: We examined typical changes in cerebral metabolite ratios in welders chronically exposed to Mn, compared with control individuals, using proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS), investigated whether an abnormality in brain metabolism is associated with neurobehavioral changes, and assessed possible implications of chronic Mn exposure. METHODS: Thirt
