BACKGROUND: Although Providencia species are recognised as important causes of bloodstream infections (BSI), their epidemiology is not well defined due to their infrequent occurrence. Our objective was to determine the overall incidence, determinants, and outcomes of Providencia species BSI, and compare the epidemiology of P. stuartii and P. rettgeri in a large population.
METHODS: All patients within Queensland, Australia with Providencia species BSI between 2000-2019 were included with clinical and outcome data collected from state-wide datasets.
RESULTS: Among 268 residents, there was 273

Providencia as an opportunistic pathogen can cause serious infection, and moreover the emergence of multi-drug-resistant Providencia strains poses a potentially life-threatening risk to public health. However, a comprehensive genomic study to reveal the population structure and dissemination of Providencia is still lacking. In this study, we conducted a genomic epidemiology analysis on the 580 global sequenced Providencia isolates, including 257 ones sequenced in this study (42 ones were fully sequenced). We established a genome sequence-based species classification scheme for Providencia, red

Osteomyelitis of the skull is a particularly life-threatening condition. Infections are usually at the base of the skull and typically occur following dissemination from another site, such as the external auditory canal. Typical organisms include Pseudomonas and Staphylococcus species. This paper demonstrates an unusual case of osteomyelitis of the frontoparietal bone, as well as the first published case of Providencia rettgeri causing cranial osteomyelitis in humans.

The aim of this report is to present a case of severe skin ulceration and cellulitis in a seven year old mongrel dog following cystitis. The Providencia stuartii strain was the only isolate from skin lesions. This bacterium is a Gram-negative rod belonging to the family of Enterobacteriaceae. To the best of our knowledge, even though there are some reports in the literature concerning animal infections with Providencia species, there have been no cases of cellulitis in which this pathogen is involved. The Providencia stuartii strain was highly sensitive to amikacin, and the dog responded quick

Purple urine bag syndrome (PUBS) is an uncommon condition typically observed in chronically ill, catheterized patients. This case report describes a 54-year-old Indian man with a history of recurrent strokes and long-term urinary catheterization who presented with lower abdominal discomfort and purple discoloration of the urine. Microbiological analysis revealed Providencia rettgeri, confirming the diagnosis of PUBS. The pathogenesis of PUBS involves the interaction between tryptophan and bacterial enzymes, resulting in the formation of colored compounds. Early identification of PUBS facilitat

CASE SUMMARY: A 15-year-old male neutered domestic shorthair cat was presented with a recent history of seizures, diarrhoea, lethargy, fever and jaundice. Marked elevation of liver enzyme activity was present and ultrasound examination was suggestive of cholecystitis and hepatitis. Neutrophilic cholangitis was confirmed on histopathology of liver biopsies. Bile culture identified a monomicrobial infection with Providencia rettgeri, which was resistant to multiple antimicrobial agents. The cat was treated with oral pradofloxacin for 4 weeks and remained well 4 months later.

Background/Objectives:Providencia stuartii is intrinsically resistant to several antibiotic classes, and acquisition of blaNDM further restricts treatment options. This study aimed to characterize NDM-producing P. stuartii isolates from a small hospital cluster in Russia and to place them within the global genomic context. Methods: Four isolates recovered between June and July 2023 from a single hospital were analyzed using Illumina and Oxford Nanopore sequencing to assess genetic relatedness and plasmid content. Results: The isolates showed identical extensively drug-resistant profiles and we

Gram-negative urease-producing bacilli, Providencia stuartii (P. stuartii), is reported in urinary tract infections, gastroenteritis, and bacteremia in humans but they rarely present with a hepatic abscess. We present a rare case of a recurrent suprahepatic cyst due to P. stuartii in a 45-year-old female, intravenous ( IV) heroin abuser with chronic hepatitis B and C. A 45-year-old female with 10 days status post right suprahepatic abscess drainage presented with recurrent, right, upper quadrant abdominal pain for one day. The pain was 7/10, sharp, radiated to the right back, and was associate

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the epidemiological and clinical findings of extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Providencia stuartii infections in a large Italian university hospital.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: All consecutive episodes of P. stuartii infection that occurred during 1999-2002 were included in the study. For each patient, we recorded the area of hospitalization and drug susceptibility of the P. stuartii strains. Patients with ESBL-producing P. stuartii infection were considered cases and those with non-ESBL-producing P. stuartii infection were used as controls.
RESULTS: On

OBJECTIVE: Providencia spp. are opportunistic Gram-negative pathogens associated with urinary tract, wound, and healthcare-associated infections. Although reported in livestock, little is known about the occurrence and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) of Providencia spp. in pets. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence, AMR profiles, and genomic characteristics of Providencia spp. isolated from diseased pets in China.
METHODS: Overall, 7633 canine and feline clinical isolates collected between 2018 and 2023 were screened for Providencia spp. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing, whole-ge

In order to investigate an outbreak of multidrug-resistant Providencia stuartii that occurred in a burn unit, we analyzed by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) all isolates of P. stuartii collected during 4 months of 2005 from patients and from a tracheal aspirator. Seventeen clinical isolates of P. stuartii, extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL) producing, were collected from 17 patients. All these isolates were nosocomially acquired. Three other isolates were collected from the aspirator probe, the aspirator reservoir and from the aspirator tube. Three different antibiotypes were iden

BACKGROUND: The genus Providencia is increasingly being recognized as an important human pathogen. Previously a member of the family Enterobacteriaceae but now reclassified into the family Morganellaceae along with Morganella and Proteus, the phylogenetic depth of this clade has expanded from 3 species in its inception to 12 as of 2025. Recent clinical and epidemiologic data provide convincing evidence that P. alcalifaciens causes gastroenteritis and there is also increasing recognition of carbapenem-resistant strains of P. stuartii and P. rettgeri causing serious infections in hospital settin

BACKGROUND: Xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis (XGP) is a rare and severe chronic inflammatory disease of the renal parenchyma, which is most commonly associated with super-infections by bacteria such as E. coli, Proteus mirabilis, and occasionally Pseudomonas species.
CASE PRESENTATION: Herein, we present a rare case of a patient with XGP infected with Providencia stuartii. Initially, the patient refused nephrectomy and underwent holmium laser lithotripsy and right ureteral stenting, followed by meropenem treatment of 7 days. Relapse occurred in the third month after discharge from the hospi

This study presents the genetic structure of two incompatibility (Inc) groups found in Providencia: the newly discovered IncFIIpPROV114-NR and the newly designated IncpCHS4.1-3. An extensive genomic comparison was performed on all 14 plasmids (three IncFIIpPROV114-NR plasmids and 11 IncpCHS4.1-3 plasmids) from Providencia, including 12 newly sequenced in this study and two from GenBank. Three IncFIIpPROV114-NR plasmids had similar conserved backbones but differed in accessory modules. The 11 IncpCHS4.1-3 plasmids fell into two groups according to differences in the conserved genes of the plasm

QnrD is a plasmid-mediated quinolone resistance (PMQR) determinant first reported in clinical Salmonella enterica isolates from China, located on nonconjugative plasmids of 4270 bp. Since then, the qnrD gene has been mostly found on plasmids around 2683 bp in Proteus and Morganella genera. However, Providencia spp. strains carrying qnrD-harboring plasmids have only been reported among clinical samples, in France and China. In this paper we describe two plasmids carrying qnrD in Providencia spp. isolated from Brazilian food and coastal waters. These plasmids present high coverage and identity w
