Pseudomonas Aeruginosa: A Masquerader in Sino-Orbital Infections.

PURPOSE: To report 2 immunocompromised patients with sino-orbital necrotizing pseudomonas infections and review the literature. METHODS: This is a noncomparative, retrospective case series, and review. The clinical data of 2 patients with histopathologic and microbiologic diagnoses of pseudomonas sinus infections causing orbital cellulitis were obtained from medical records. A retrospective literature review was performed on all reported cases of periorbital pseudomonas infections. RESULTS: One patient with acquired immune deficiency syndrome was noted to have orbital cellulitis with clear v

Unusual presentation of Pseudomonas aeruginosa infections: a review.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is an opportunistic, gram negative bacillus that causes serious hospital acquired infections. However, it also causes infections with unusual presentations which are acquired in a non-hospital environment. This report will discuss the pathogenesis, clinical manifestations, and therapy of this uncommon infection, such as: 1) Pseudomonas folliculitis: a superficial or deep bacterial infection associated with the use of public hot tubs, whirlpools and swimming pools. 2) Invasive external otitis: an infection that can progress to skull base mostly associated to elderly diabe

Novel therapeutic strategies to counter Pseudomonas aeruginosa infections.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a highly successful opportunistic pathogen that displays intrinsic multidrug resistance and has a tremendous capacity to acquire further resistance mechanisms. During chronic infection, the bacterium can form a protective biofilm therefore reducing the efficacy of existing antibiotics. P. aeruginosa also harbors an impressive range of virulence factors, many of which are controlled by the quorum-sensing system. Several novel therapeutics are under investigation such as those directed against biofilm formation and quorum-sensing systems along with bacteriophages and im

Pseudomonas bronchopulmonary infections in a palliative care setting.

Blood stream infections and pneumonia caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa is associated with high mortality, especially in an immunocompromised host. A large section of the palliative care patient population has varied forms of compromised immunity due to advanced cancer or cancer treatment, organ failures, chronic autoimmune disorders, degenerative conditions, and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome. The lung is one of the most frequently involved organs in a variety of complications in an immunocompromised host and infection is the most common complication. P. aeruginosa is one of the most commo

The Pseudomonas aeruginosa opportunistic pathogen and human infections.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa, a Gram-negative environmental species and an opportunistic microorganism, establishes itself in vulnerable patients, such as those with cystic fibrosis or hospitalized in intensive care units. It has become a major cause of nosocomial infections worldwide (about 10% of all such infections in most European Union hospitals) and a serious threat to Public Health. The overuse and misuse of antibiotics have also led to the selection of resistant strains against which very few therapeutic options exist. How an environmental species can cause human infections remains a key que

[Pathologic anatomy of Pseudomonas aeruginosa infections in children].

Examinations of 143 autopsy observations of P. aeruginosa infection in children were performed. Among them, 119 patients had pneumonia, 16 affections of the alimentary tract, 8 sepsis with various localizations of the primary focus. Morphologically the affected organs presented foci of necrosis of different size with tremendous numbers of bacteria, poor leukocyte reaction, and deep circulatory disorders in the periphery. A more manifest leukocyte infiltration in foci of lesions was observed in the cases where other bacterial microflora, in addition to P. aeruginosa, was present. P. aeruginosa

Infections with Pseudomonas aeruginosa in the compromised host.

A review is given of the role of the various host defences in man against Pseudomonas aeruginosa and the mechanisms by which these are compromised in certain patient categories especially susceptible to serious Pseudomonas infections. The defects of host defences are usually complex and multiple, affecting various sites in the local and the systemic defences. Certain defects are emphasized, e.g. abnormalities of first line defences (skin, mucous membranes), and both quantitative and qualitative defects in polymorphonuclear granulocytes. However, it is also suggested that compromised functions

Urinary tract infections and catheter-associated urinary tract infections caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

SUMMARYUrinary tract infection (UTI) is one of the most common infections in otherwise healthy individuals. UTI is also common in healthcare settings where patients often require urinary catheters to alleviate urinary retention. The placement of a urinary catheter often leads to catheter-associated urinary tract infection (CAUTI) caused by a broad range of opportunistic pathogens, commonly referred to as ESKAPE (Enterococcus, Staphylococcus, Klebsiella, Acinetobacter, Pseudomonas, and Enterobacter) pathogens. Our understanding of CAUTI is complicated by the differences in pathogens, in initial

[THE DNA DIAGNOSTIC OF PSEUDOMONAS INFECTION].

The modern laboratory diagnostic of pseudomonas infection, including bacteriologic analysis with subsequent identication of agent, is time-consuming and it is not every time effective because of modifiability of characteristics of the mentioned agent. The article presents the laboratory mode of identification of Pseudomonas aeruginosa based on electrophoresis analysis of DNA isolatedfrom wound samples or microbial mass grew on solid nutritional medium. The wound sample or pure growth is placed into physiological solution and is warmed under 990C. This action results in DNA releasing into super

Inhaled antimicrobial prescribing for Pseudomonas aeruginosa infections in Europe.

BACKGROUND: Prescribers have an increasing range of inhaled antimicrobial formulations to choose from when prescribing both eradication and chronic suppression regimens in cystic fibrosis (CF). This study aimed to investigate the decision-making process behind prescribing of inhaled antimicrobials for Pseudomonas aeruginosa infections. METHODS: A questionnaire was developed using Microsoft Forms and then forwarded to 57 Principal Investigators (PIs), at each of the CF centres within the European Cystic Fibrosis Society-Clinical Trials Network (ECFS-CTN). Data collection occurred between Novem

Rational approach in the management of Pseudomonas aeruginosa infections.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review details the management of Pseudomonas aeruginosa infections covering both current and future treatment options that are and may be available for the clinicians. RECENT FINDINGS: Pseudomonas aeruginosa infections are a great concern in hospital-acquired infections with very limited therapeutic options. The increasing antibiotic resistance has led to a need for different treatment choices that range from the use of new antibiotics to new nonantibiotic alternative agents to kill or disarm the pathogen. SUMMARY: New molecules such as ceftolozane-tazobactam, ceftazi

Combination therapy for treatment of Pseudomonas aeruginosa bloodstream infections.

OBJECTIVES: Management of bloodstream infections ("BSIs") caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa remains controversial as data supporting the use of definite combination treatment for severe P. aeruginosa infections remain conflicting. We aimed to determine differences in mortality between patients treated with definite combination therapy and monotherapy in a large 11-year cohort. METHODS: All consecutive patients with P. aeruginosa BSI hospitalized at the University Hospital Basel, Switzerland, a tertiary academic care center, from January 2003 to December 2013 were included. Pertinent clinical d

Urinary tract infections caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa: a minireview.

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are a serious health problem affecting millions of people each year. Infections of the urinary tract are the second most common type of infection in the body. Catheterization of the urinary tract is the most common factor, which predisposes the host to these infections. Catheter-associated UTI (CAUTI) is responsible for 40% of nosocomial infections, making it the most common cause of nosocomial infection. CAUTI accounts for more than 1 million cases in hospitals and nursing homes annually and often involve uropathogens other than Escherichia coli. While the epid

Epidemiology of community-acquired Pseudomonas aeruginosa infections in children.

The epidemiology of community-acquired Pseudomonas aeruginosa infections in children during a one-year period (January through December 1993) was evaluated. A total of 6,859 clinical samples, each one representing a separate individual with suspected infection, were cultured. Pseudomonas aeruginosa was isolated from 218 children with various infections occurring in the following order of frequency: chronic suppurative otitis media, 76.3%; appendicitis/peritonitis, 10.3%; osteomyelitis, 8.9%; skin or soft tissue infection, 6.3%; acute conjunctivitis, 3.0%; and urinary tract infection, 0.1%. Pseudomonas infections in children with human immunodeficiency virus infection.

Thirteen bacteremias and 25 nonbacteremic infections caused by Pseudomonas spp. occurred in 22 of 236 children with human immunodeficiency virus infection with a rate of infection of 0.098 (bacteremia, 0.030) per patient year. Four patients were neutropenic (less than 500/microliters). Central venous catheter (CVC)-related infections were most frequent (n = 20) followed by otitis externa (n = 6) and pneumonia (n = 5). Pseudomonas aeruginosa was the most common isolate and caused both CVC-related and CVC-unrelated infections, whereas other Pseudomonas spp. and Xanthomonas maltophilia were almos

Pseudomonas infections associated with hot tubs and other environments.

Infections due to Pseudomonas aeruginosa are not confined to the hospital intensive care unit. This paper examines the association of P. aeruginosa and several community-acquired infections. Hot tub folliculitis is a recently described disorder occurring in outbreaks among persons who unknowingly immerse themselves in contaminated whirlpools, spas, or swimming pools. The green nail syndrome and other dermatoses are also reviewed. Infective endocarditis, invasive external otitis, and puncture would osteomyelitis are serious infections that carry high risks for the patient and challenge the phys
