Dermatologic Diseases of Four-Toed Hedgehogs.

Dermatologic diseases are frequently diagnosed in the four-toed hedgehog. Common clinical signs include spine loss, scales and crusts, pruritus, alopecia, and masses. Caparinia tripilis, family Psoroptidae, is the most common mite affecting hedgehogs, and is diagnosed via light microscopy. Dermatophytosis from Trichophyton erinacei infection is a common zoonotic dermatologic disease in pet hedgehogs. Diagnosis is through fungal culture. Neoplasia is another major cause of dermatologic diseases in four-toed hedgehogs. The diagnostic approach typically begins with a fine-needle aspirate but ofte

Taxonomic priority in Psoroptes mange mites: P. ovis or P. equi?

The taxonomic priority of Psoroptes mange mites (Acari: Psoroptidae) is reviewed and the original species descriptions re-examined. The question of whether the name Psoroptes equi or Psoroptes ovis has priority has importance with respect to the descriptions used in any legislation required for compulsory treatment of infested animals. It is concluded that in the work by Hering [(1838) Nova Acta Physico-Medica Acadamiae Caesareae Leopoldino-Carolinae Naturae Curiosorum. Tomi 18, Pars 2, Vratislaviae und Bonn], which is generally assumed to present the type description, the first Psoroptes mite

Psoroptes ovis mange in a dog in Brazil.

Psoroptes ovis (Acari: Psoroptidae, Hering, 1838) is an ectoparasite that poses a high risk to herd animals and causes a severe dermal disease called psoroptic mange. This work aimed to report P. ovis parasitism in a dog. A male Pinscher that lives in rural areas and had free access to sheep farming showed hair loss in the dorsal region and mild itching. Dermatological examination demonstrated irregular alopecia, scabs, dry desquamation and erythema around the dorsal region of the thorax and pelvis. Hemogram has shown mild eosinophilia and the fungal culture was negative. In skin scrapings, P.

Intestinal proteases of free-living and parasitic astigmatid mites.

Among arthropod pests, mites are responsible for considerable damage to crops, humans and other animals. However, detailed physiological data on these organisms remain sparse, mainly because of their small size but possibly also because of their extreme diversity. Focusing on intestinal proteases, we draw together information from three distinct mite species that all feed on skin but have separately adapted to a free-living, a strictly ecto-parasitic and a parasitic lifestyle. A wide range of studies involving immunohistology, molecular biology, X-ray crystallography and enzyme biochemistry of

Psoroptes cuniculi for treatment and in 10 rabbits in contact with the infested animals for protection. The efficacy of the drug was evaluated based on the clinical signs, the absence of live mites and new clinical cases during a period of least two weeks. Elimination of clinical signs and mites were seen in three rabbits seven days after the ivermectin injection, but one rabbit, which had meningitis-like signs, died. Also, no new cases occurred in the other ten rabbits. These results suggest that an application of ivermectin can completely eliminate mites from rabbits naturally infested with

In Vivo Acaricidal Effect of Linoleic Acid and Olive Oil Against Psoroptes cuniculi Mites in Experimentally Infested Rabbits.

PURPOSE: Psoroptes cuniculi is the most prevalent mite affecting rabbits worldwide. It is the primary cause of otitis in this species and significantly compromises animal welfare, leading to considerable economic losses. In search of alternative control strategies, several plant-derived oils such as olive, cinnamon, oregano, neem, and lemon oils have been evaluated in vitro for their acaricidal potential. In this study, the in vivo efficacy of extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) and linoleic acid (LA) was assessed as alternative treatments against P. cuniculi. METHODS: Twenty-four rabbits were expe

First report of in vitro resistance of Psoroptes ovis to ivermectin in Argentina.

Sheep scab, or psoroptic mange, a disease caused by the mite Psoroptes ovis, is commonly treated with ivermectin (IVM) and other macrocyclic lactones. In Argentina, in vivo trials have shown a decrease in IVM effectiveness to treat both sheep and bovine scab. In this work, we used an in vitro technique to establish the efficacy of IVM and two other macrocyclic lactones, doramectin (DRM) and moxidectin (MXD), against P. ovis in sheep. Mites were exposed to plates with culture medium and either ethanol or each of the acaricides, and mite mortality at a diagnostic concentration of IVM was assesse

First evidence of resistance to macrocyclic lactones in Psoroptes ovis sheep scab mites in the UK.

Ovine psoroptic mange (sheep scab) is an infection of substantial economic and animal welfare concern in the UK. Its prevalence has increased rapidly over the last 20 years and management is dependent on a small number of acaricidal compounds, many of which are also used to control a range of other endoparasites and ectoparasites. Here, the effects of the macrocyclic lactone (ML) moxidectin was considered using in vitro assays against mites from four farm populations where persistent treatment failure had been reported: two in West Wales, one from the England/Wales border and one in Herefordsh

The authors captured bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis) comprising a small population in the San Bernardino Mountains of California and evaluated the degree of infestation by mites of the genus Psoroptes for each individual. The animals were treated with two novel methods: amitraz-impregnated collars and cyfluthrin-impregnated ear tags and recaptured the following year to evaluate the effect of treatment. The authors compared data on degree of infestation for animals recaptured in the posttreatment year, detected no significant interyear differences in infestation severity scores among animals tr
