A study of emotional attitude of psychiatric nurses: reliability and validity of the Nurse Attitude Scale.

In psychiatric nursing, the exchange of feelings among nurses and patients is vital. However, expressed emotion (EE) studies that have been performed in family studies of schizophrenia indicate that a high EE score can predict the relapse of schizophrenic patients. In the case of long-term inpatients at a psychiatric hospital in Japan, the emotional attitude of nurses towards patients is anticipated to have some effect on the course of the illness. In the present study, we revised part of the phrasing of the Japanese version of the Family Attitude Scale, and renamed it the Nurse Attitude Scale

Harm Reduction as an Essential Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing Skill.

OBJECTIVE: In 2023, over 20 million individuals in the United States experienced a mental health condition and a co-occurring substance use disorder. As many as 42% of individuals with a mental health condition report past-year illicit drug use, and as many as 6% report past-year opioid use. Given the high rates of psychiatric comorbidity and mortality associated with opioid use disorder, it is imperative that psychiatric mental health nurses not only view opioid use disorder as a brain-based, chronic remitting-relapsing disease but also leverage non-stigmatizing clinical approaches to improve

Psychiatric assessment of a nursing home population using audiovisual telecommunication.

The purpose of this study was to demonstrate that psychiatric assessment of nursing home residents could be reliably carried out remotely via telecommunications. Twenty-seven nursing home residents each had two interviews consisting of the following three rating scales: the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS), and the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale (BPRS). The interviews were conducted by three trained psychiatrists, each of whom interviewed two-thirds of the subjects. Subjects were sequentially assigned to have either two in-person interviews (in-person

Hope in mental health and psychiatric nursing: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: In recent decades, efforts have been made to define and understand hope in health care, particularly in the prevention and treatment of mental illness. Given the contextual nature of hope, this article aimed to map the available scientific evidence on hope in mental health and psychiatric nursing. METHODS: The Joanna Briggs Institute methodology was used for scoping reviews. The following inclusion criteria were used: studies with adults (≥ 18 years) with a mental illness, family members/carers or nurses who addressed the concept of hope in the context of mental health and psychia

Lifetime neuropsychiatric symptoms in Huntington's disease: Implications for psychiatric nursing.

Neuropsychiatric manifestations of Huntington's disease (HD) can present years before motor symptoms. Nurses with specialized training provide superior care for HD patients, but HD exposure in nursing education is limited. Here we aimed to describe the historical neuropsychiatric burden in 50 HD patients and discuss implications for psychiatric nurses. Fifty patients with HD were assessed by a board-certified psychiatrist and completed surveys about symptoms, social history, medication use, and quality of life outcomes. Descriptive statistics were used to summarize patient characteristics, and

[Rejection of Care (Nursing or Medication) in Elder Psychiatric Patients].

OBJECTIVE: Rejecting nursing or medication is an increasing challenge for professional care in elderly people. METHODS: This explorative study was part of the Gerontopsychiatry study Berlin (Gepsy-B), an investigation of the data of all older inpatients (≥ 65 years) admitted to a psychiatric hospital within 3 years (1266 admissions). RESULTS: 150 cases (11.8 %) rejected care. 94 (7.4 %) refused nursing and 89 (7.0 %) medication intake. 79.3 % of them suffered from organic brain diseases, particularly from delirium superimposed on dementia (ICD-10 F05.1). Nursing was more often rejected by ol

Patients with disordered water balance. Innovative psychiatric nursing intervention strategies.

1. Patients with disordered water balance (DWB) have difficulty with fluid intake/output and osmoregulation. These difficulties are characterized by polydipsia, polyuria, significant variation in pattern of excretion, abnormal diurnal weight gain, and behavioral changes. 2. Therapeutic milieu-management strategies for patients experiencing acute and chronic phases of DWB are the cornerstone of long-term management of these patients. 3. Implementation of the intervention and milieu-management strategies described in this article resulted in a reduction of patients requiring acute medical treatm

Patient aggression in psychiatric services: the experience of a sample of nurses at two psychiatric facilities in Nigeria.

OBJECTIVE: Aggression is a common feature in psychiatric in-patient units in Africa. The attitudes of psychiatric nurses and their perceptions of the frequency of in-patient aggression have not been explored in the Nigerian context. METHOD: Using a crosssectional study design, two self-report questionnaires (the Attitudes toward Aggression Scale (ATAS) and the Perception of the Prevalence of Aggression Scale (POPAS)) were administered to nursing staff (n=73) at two psychiatric facilities in Benin City, Nigeria. RESULTS: Overall, nurses viewed aggression as offensive, destructive and intrusiv

Psychiatric nurses' descriptions of women with postpartum psychosis and nurses' responses--an exploratory study in Sweden.

Postpartum psychosis is the most serious type of psychiatric illness related to childbirth. This interview study with nine psychiatric nurses in Sweden explored psychiatric nurses' descriptions of women with psychosis occurring in the postpartum period and nurses' responses when providing care to these women. Content analysis was used to analyze the data. The nurses described delusions, disconnection, aggression, changed personality, self-absorption, insomnia, chaos, quietness, suicidal ideation, and 'strange eyes.' The description of strange eyes noted by the nurses has not been found in the

Clinical outcomes and satisfaction of patients of clinical nurse specialists in psychiatric-mental health nursing.

Survey research was conducted to examine clinical outcomes and satisfaction of patients of psychiatric mental health clinical nurse specialists (CNSs). Patients who had terminated from outpatient psychotherapy with 6 CNSs in 1993 were mailed a questionnaire (N = 223). Follow-ups by mail yielded a response rate of 45% (n = 100). The questionnaires included the Profile of Mood States-Short Form ([POMS-SF]; McNair, Lorr, & Droppleman, 1992). Quality of Life Function ([QOL]; Lehman, 1991), and Patient Satisfaction Scale (Baradell, 1994). Paired difference t-tests were used to evaluate clinical out

The failure of exposure treatment in agoraphobia: implications for the practice of nurse therapists and community psychiatric nurses.

There are no systematic studies of the failure of psychiatric nursing interventions and few very such studies in the psychological/psychiatric outcome literature. This study reports a controlled study of exposure treatment with agoraphobic clients who were treated by nurse therapists and psychologists. This includes an analysis of the four categories of treatment failure (i.e. treatment refusers, treatment dropouts, failures and relapsers). The analysis consisted of an examination of the outcome data of clients who met a priori criteria for the categories of failure and an examination of quest

The base for exposure treatment in agoraphobia: some indicators for nurse therapists and community psychiatric nurses.

This study examines, using a randomised control trial, the question of the optimum base for exposure treatment with agoraphobic clients. The results have relevance for community psychiatric nurses and nurse behaviour therapists working with such problems and indeed for other behavioural practitioners. While the results confirm the already extensive evidence for the efficacy of exposure in vivo for agoraphobic clients, the results show that in general there is no difference between outcome of treatment delivered from the patient's own home and the out-patient clinic. There are, however, a small

[Role of the psychiatric liaison nurse in suicide risk prevention].

From suicide risk prevention to treatment, the suicidal crisis process must be known to all carers to ensure appropriate and effective care. The psychiatry liaison team at the Nantes University Hospital advocates it with somatic teams through its liaison and consultation work. At the heart of this care network, the clinical expertise of the psychiatric liaison nurse educates nursing colleagues in identifying suicide risk. The nurse's clinical assessment and knowledge of the care system optimises the overall management and the path of patient care.

The role of nurse administrators and managers in quality psychiatric care.

Psychiatric healthcare services in Japan demand continuous improvement to ensure quality care. Psychiatric nurse administrators and managers greatly influence the quality of services. To improve treatment, the following are considered necessary: clarification of service goal, proper assessment of treatment outcome, shortening of hospitalization, patient-centered care, establishment of trust relationships based on open communication with patients, and effective interdisciplinary teamwork. Additionally, administrators and managers must evaluate the clinical competence of individual nurses and ap

"Believing facilitates success": psychiatric nurses' perspectives on recovery.

BACKGROUND: Psychiatric nurses play a crucial role in patient recovery processes, and their attitudes during these processes can directly influence the recovery of individuals with mental illness. However, the concept of recovery in psychiatric disorders is perceived differently among nurses, which, in turn, can affect the patient's recovery trajectory. This study aims to explore and investigate the perspectives, thoughts and experiences of nurses working in psychiatric clinics about recovery in mental illnesses. METHODS: The study was conducted between September and December 2021 at a Mental
