The effects of broadband elicitor duration on a psychoacoustic measure of cochlear gain reduction.

Physiological and psychoacoustic studies of the medial olivocochlear reflex (MOCR) in humans have often relied on long duration elicitors (>100 ms). This is largely due to previous research using otoacoustic emissions (OAEs) that found multiple MOCR time constants, including time constants in the 100s of milliseconds, when elicited by broadband noise. However, the effect of the duration of a broadband noise elicitor on similar psychoacoustic tasks is currently unknown. The current study measured the effects of ipsilateral broadband noise elicitor duration on psychoacoustic gain reduction estim

[Psychoacoustic tests for perceptual assessment of processor fitting in patients with cochlear implants].

THE AIM OF THE STUDY: Was to study the possibility of using a battery of psychoacoustic tests to assess the tuning of the cochlear implant processor (CI) in deaf patients. METHODOLOGY: The study involved 60 prellingually deaf patients aged 10 to 23 years with oral speech skills. To assess the quality of the CI processor tuning, in addition to traditional methods, a special battery of psychoacoustic tests was used. The first block of tests assessed the perception of the basic characteristics of sound signals (duration, temporal structure, spectrum, timbre) and was used to assess the initial se

A psychoacoustic application for the adjustment of electrical hearing thresholds in cochlear implant patients.

OBJECTIVE: Fitting cochlear implants, especially the precise determination of electrical hearing thresholds, is a time-consuming and complex task for patients as well as audiologists. Aim of the study was to develop a method that enables cochlear implant (CI) patients to determine their electrical hearing thresholds precisely and independently. Applicability and impact of this method on speech perception in noise at soft speech levels were evaluated. METHOD: An adaptive psychoacoustic procedure for precise hearing threshold determination (precT) was implemented using MatLab (MathWorks) and a

Effects of efferent acoustic reflex activation on psychoacoustical tuning curves in humans.

CONCLUSIONS: The results show that, in humans, activation of the contralateral EAR makes the PTC narrower at 1 kHz but wider at 4 kHz. These data are consistent with those reported previously in animals and demonstrate that, during medial efferent stimulation in humans, frequency resolution is improved at low frequencies but impaired at high frequencies. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate, in humans, the effect of activation of the contralateral efferent acoustic reflex (EAR) on the psychoacoustical tuning curves (PTCs) recorded for 1- and 4-kHz probe tones. MATERIAL AND METHODS. Ten young (20-30 years)

Effects of cochlear impairment and equivalent-threshold masking on psychoacoustic tuning curves.

Psychoacoustic tuning curves in simultaneous masking were measured in three groups: listeners with hearing impairment of primarily cochlear origin, normal listeners with equivalent-threshold masking (ETM) and normal listeners tested in the quiet. ETM was produced by presenting a continuous back-ground noise that was spectrally shaped to yield masked thresholds within 3 dB of each impaired listener's quiet thresholds. For the tuning curves, the level of a 50-Hz-wide noise band necessary to mask a 10-dB SL tone was measured for six masker frequencies. Results under ETM indicate that the shape of

Effect of Psychoacoustic Learning on Cardiac Auscultation Proficiency in Nurse Practitioner Students.

BACKGROUND: Assessment is a vital role of all nurses, yet cardiac murmur identification remains difficult for students. Cardiac auscultation is a technical, not intellectual, skill, and a psychoacoustic approach to learning is recommended. A psychoacoustic approach involves repetition of cardiac sounds to facilitate auditory perceptual learning. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of a psychoacoustic learning modality for identification of cardiac murmurs by nurse practitioner (NP) students. METHODS: A repeated-measures design was used. Following a pretest,

Psychoacoustic analyses of cochlear mechanisms in tinnitus patients with normal auditory thresholds.

OBJECTIVE: Tinnitus is often related to auditory dysfunction. We hypothesised that, among individuals with normal auditory thresholds, the mechanism of frequency selectivity might differ between subjects with and without tinnitus. Our objective was to identify any differences between normal-hearing individuals with tinnitus and those without in terms of psychophysical tuning curves (PTCs) and threshold-equalising noise (TEN) test results. DESIGN: We determined PTCs and performed the TEN test. STUDY SAMPLE: We evaluated 57 individuals, 16 with bilateral tinnitus (tinnitus-group) and 41 withou

Relations between notched-noise suppressed TEOAE and the psychoacoustical critical bandwidth.

Narrow-band transitory evoked otoacoustic emissions (TEOAE) were recorded for nine normal hearing subjects in the presence of a broadband tone complex suppressor. Introducing a spectral notch at the frequency of the narrow-band stimulus causes the suppression effect to decrease, the more so the wider the notch. This decrease in suppression permits an estimate of the size of one critical band. One advantage of this approach is that no active participation of the subjects is required. The estimated critical bandwidth is then compared with independent estimates based on a simultaneous masking exp

Monaural and binaural time resolution ability in the aged. A psychoacoustic and electrophysiological study.

Time resolution ability is an important factor of auditory processing, especially in binaural hearing. In psychoacoustical and electrophysiological studies the time resolution of brief modulations of signal amplitude and frequency in monaural hearing, including gap detection ability, was analysed. To reveal the time resolution ability of the binaural hearing system, brief interaural modulations of signal amplitude, short changes of interaural time delay or noise coherence in broadband noise bursts were generated. The sensation levels of these short-lasting changes in the noise structure and th

A psychoacoustical study on time resolution of brief intensity changes in dichotic hearing.

Psychoacoustical methods were used to study the phenomena involved in the detected of brief intensity changes within a noise burst. In subjects with normal hearing time intervals between 5 and 100 ms are noticed for the detection depending on the amount of intensity change. The value for a just noticeable difference varies with age and in pathological states. Possible peripheral and central processes of this sort of time resolution ability of the hearing organ are outlined.

Acoustic and Psychoacoustic Analyses of Predominant Strain Elicited via Modulated Vocal Effort.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to examine objective correlates of strain by reducing the covarying effects of other voice qualities. Predominant strain was elicited in a group of typical voice individuals instructed to modulate their vocal effort. The resulting sustained vowel productions were evaluated by (a) auditory-perceptual ratings to confirm the presence of predominant strain, and (b) a series of objective acoustic and psychoacoustic measures previously reported as potentially effective in the characterization of strain. METHODS: Sustained vowel /ɑ/ productions were elicited fr

The effect of broadband elicitor laterality on psychoacoustic gain reduction across signal frequency.

There are psychoacoustic methods thought to measure gain reduction, which may be from the medial olivocochlear reflex (MOCR), a bilateral feedback loop that adjusts cochlear gain. Although studies have used ipsilateral and contralateral elicitors and have examined strength at different signal frequencies, these factors have not been examined within a single study. Therefore, basic questions about gain reduction, such as the relative strength of ipsilateral vs contralateral elicitation and the relative strength across signal frequency, are not known. In the current study, gain reduction from ip

In-air hearing of a diving duck: A comparison of psychoacoustic and auditory brainstem response thresholds.

Auditory sensitivity was measured in a species of diving duck that is not often kept in captivity, the lesser scaup. Behavioral (psychoacoustics) and electrophysiological [the auditory brainstem response (ABR)] methods were used to measure in-air auditory sensitivity, and the resulting audiograms were compared. Both approaches yielded audiograms with similar U-shapes and regions of greatest sensitivity (2000-3000 Hz). However, ABR thresholds were higher than psychoacoustic thresholds at all frequencies. This difference was least at the highest frequency tested using both methods (5700 Hz) and

Psychoacoustic Characteristics of Tinnitus versus Temporal Resolution in Subjects with Normal Hearing Sensitivity.

Introduction Cochlear or neural mechanisms of tinnitus generation may affect auditory temporal resolution in tinnitus patients even with normal audiometry. Thus, studying the correlation between tinnitus characteristics and auditory temporal resolution in subjects with tinnitus may help in proper modification of tinnitus management strategy. Objective This study aims to examine the relationship between the psychoacoustic measures of tinnitus and the auditory temporal resolution in subjects with normal audiometry. Methods Two normal hearing groups with ages ranging from 20 to 45 years were invo

Psychoacoustical deficits related to bilateral subcortical hemorrhages. A case with apperceptive auditory agnosia.

We report a case of acute deafness secondary to bilateral hemorrhages involving the external capsule and extending to both temporal isthmi. The lesions probably disrupted both auditory radiations. Deafness disappeared within 2 weeks leading to a transient auditory agnosia for environmental and verbal sounds. Performance on audiological and neurolinguistic tests were consistent with the hypothesis of a deficit of non-specific auditory processes. Psychoacoustical deficits related to subcortical lesions are very rare and might differ from those due to cortical lesions by the lack of aphasia. The

Modification of spontaneous and evoked otoacoustic emissions and associated psychoacoustic microstructure by aspirin consumption.

The discovery that aspirin consumption can abolish spontaneous otoacoustic emissions [D. McFadden and H.S. Plattsmier, J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 76, 443-448 (1984)] provides a technique for further exploring the relation between otoacoustic emissions (spontaneous and evoked) and psychoacoustic threshold microstructure. Spontaneous emissions, delayed evoked emissions, synchronous evoked emissions, and threshold microstructure in four subjects were monitored before, during, and after consumption of 3.9 g of aspirin per day (three 325-mg tablets every 6 h) for 3 or 4 days. The changes in spontaneous em

Effects of ipsilateral, contralateral, and bilateral noise precursors on psychoacoustical tuning curves in humans.

Cochlear tuning and hence auditory frequency selectivity are thought to change in noisy environments by activation of the medial olivocochlear reflex (MOCR). In humans, auditory frequency selectivity is often assessed using psychoacoustical tuning curves (PTCs), a plot of the level required for pure-tone maskers to just mask a fixed-level pure-tone probe as a function of masker frequency. Sometimes, however, the stimuli used to measure a PTC are long enough that they can activate the MOCR by themselves and thus affect the PTC. Here, PTCs for probe frequencies of 500 Hz and 4 kHz were measured
