This paper explores the mystical unconscious as a dimension of psychoanalysis that moves beyond psychoanalysis's emphasis on repression and interpretation. Drawing from psychoanalytic insights, mystical traditions, and personal clinical encounters with states of spirit possession, the author argues for a psychoanalytic stance of witnessing. Through concepts such as the mystical vertex, internal third, and the analyst as a double, the author presents psychoanalysis as an art of profound attunement-one that welcomes spectral, sublime, and sacred psychic experiences not as pathology, but as meani

The author describes the differences between standard psychoanalysis and transference-focused psychotherapy (TFP) and reviews particular difficulties that psychodynamically trained clinicians have in learning TFP. In delineating differences between standard psychoanalysis and TFP, the author discusses mutual influences between standard psychoanalytic techniques and techniques of TFP. TFP is an extension and modification of standard psychoanalysis, but with quantitative modifications geared to the treatment of the most severe segment of personality disorders that tend not to be treatable by sta

Three groups of patients with rheumafactor-negative diseases (Palindromic Rheumatism, Reiter's disease, Psoriatic Arthritis) took psychodiagnostic investigations. Tests administrated: MMPI, Rorschach-test, Szondi-test and TAT. The findings of the qualitative psychoanalytic investigations and interpretations of the three groups were compared with the psychological topics of patients with chronic Rheumatoid Arthritis as well as with the findings of the psychoanalytic explorations by Zander. Finally some considerations to the link as well as to the reduction of movement responses in the Rorschach

Traditional Freudian psychoanalysis has always considered interpretation to be the most effective tool for altering deeply ingrained unconscious thought patterns and perspectives. Through detailed vignettes, this case study describes how a persistently concrete response to interpretation is ultimately analyzed and worked through. The work of Alan Bass is used as a technical guide toward facilitating this process. His understanding of concrete resistances is an elaboration of Freud's interest in fetishism and disavowal (the predominant defense against differentiation) and Eros (the integrating

In his early writings, Freud thought of trauma in two very different ways. The term could refer to any experience that is subjectively unbearable, or, as epitomized by the seduction hypothesis, it could refer to something that was done to one person by another. In today's psychoanalytic climate - and in the broader culture as well - the second way of conceptualizing trauma dominates our discourse, replacing the elegant ambiguity of Freud's early thinking. In this paper I explore the clinical implications of this largely implicit shift in meaning, considering what may have been lost in the proc

Narcissistic patients tend to push the analyst to work harder than usual to contain, understand, translate, and utilize their countertransference states. This is because of the unusually extreme reliance on denial, devaluation, projective identification, and control that these individuals exhibit. Defenses against loss, envy, greed, and dependence create difficult transference states in which symbolic or creative material is flattened, stripped, and neutralized. Feelings are out of the question. This clinical paper explores the narcissistic lack of connection to self and other that endures in

The recent developments of depthpsychology and neurophysiology makes a new orientation and interpretation of dreams necessary. Koella for example describes night-mares of persons taking Beta-blockers. Of course, the great ideas of Freud and Adler should be integrated, not abandoned. Most of all influences of biologic factors on quality of dreams should be discussed.

Since its origins in recent diagnostic perspectives, the concept of personality functioning has been exclusively defined as a general factor of personality (pathology). Researchers have justified this definition by appealing to descriptive empirical findings (e.g., positive correlations among various personality disorder indicators) or traditional psychoanalytic theories (e.g., ego psychology). In this review, I argue that this monopoly of interpretive viewpoints is currently impeding progress in the field of personality functioning. To begin with, I review seminal psychoanalytic theories and

Freud's "Fragment of an Analysis of a Case of Hysteria" stands as one of his most extensive case studies, weaving together his explorations of the Oedipus complex, dream analysis, and hysteria. In this study, I propose an alternative lens through which to interpret the case: as a Bildungsroman. While ostensibly focused on Dora, the analysand, and her journey to maturity, the narrative occasionally appears to be overshadowed by Freud's own experiences and story. I contend that this overtaking of Dora's narrative is facilitated by both thematic and linguistic factors. Additionally, I examine the

I use the clinical example of a traumatized adolescent to talk about how a transference experience creates the frame where the analytic work occurs. Out of the external boundaries of the relationships with an object, the internal frame, the womb of transformation processes, is created. The analyst's capacity to wait is essential for the transformation that creates and shapes the transference experience, which, like playing, becomes the matrix of the frame where it happens as it happens. As the traumatic experiences find their place in the transference and begin to be integrated, the adolescent

Ferenczi's appreciation of the inherently mutual nature of the analytic encounter led him, and many who followed, to explore the value of mutual openness between patient and analyst. Specifically, Ferenczi saw the analyst's openness as an antidote to his earlier defensive denial of his failings and ambivalence toward the patient, which had undermined his patient's trust. My own view is that, while the analyst's openness with the patient can indeed help reestablish trust and restore a productive analytic process in the short term, it also poses long-term dangers. In certain treatments it may en

"The war against women" is a systemic process of discrimination that seeks to subjugate women. In this essay, I will critically examine a contemporary paper, published in a well-known psychoanalytic journal, that views the patient through the lens of Bion's "reverie-ing mother" concept. I argue that leaning upon any particular theory to explain an individual's complex psychological disturbance adheres to a reductionistic line of reasoning that falls prey to the genetic fallacy; interpreting psychological phenomena in this way becomes a myopically focused perch that narrows the clinician's rang

Character traits like narcissism, mania and grandiosity are routinely discussed in the psychoanalytic literature as aspects of psychopathology only. However, many individuals who have both achieved and contributed to society in the most profound ways often have such characteristics. Psychoanalysts, sometimes envious of patients who possess considerable wealth and/or power, may be inclined to overly pathologize such qualities, denying their own desires for the perks of power and material success. Mad Men is discussed largely in this context.

Using the example of the vampire motif origin and psychic function of the ghost-story in context of the pertaining historical situation are presented. A comparison to the development and function of night-mares is drawn.--The vampire motif in Europe originally developed at the end of the Middle Ages. As with the collective madness of witch persecution it was a superstition which was in fact supported by the church of this time. The belief in vampires was used for splitting of, projection and acting-out of taboo aggressive, oral and sexual drives. Although the era of Englightment quenched this
