Effects of a psychological first aid (PFA) based on the SIX Cs model on acute stress responses in a simulated emergency.

OBJECTIVE: The SIX Cs model, a neuropsychological framework for psychological first aid, addresses acute stress responses that may lead to functional failure and heighten the risk for posttraumatic stress disorder. Unlike emotional interventions, this model prioritizes Cognitive Communication to diminish emotional overwhelm and bolster cognitive functioning. It introduces a Challenge for active engagement, Control for cognitive management of situations, Commitment from the helper to reduce loneliness, and Continuity to ensure narrative coherence. This study evaluates the SIX Cs model's effecti

Effects of a psychological first aid simulated training for pregnant flood victims on disaster relief worker's knowledge, competence, and self-efficacy.

AIMS: To develop a simulation-based psychological first aid (PFA) education program for disaster relief workers and verify its impact on their PFA knowledge, PFA performance competence, and self-efficacy. BACKGROUND: Relief workers should be provided with systematic education on their required knowledge and skills; however, PFA training for relief workers is lacking, which results in ineffective mental health support during disaster situations. METHODS: This study adopted a non-equivalent control group pre-posttest quasi-experimental design. Thirty relief workers from mental health welfare c

'Being empathetic to my patients and ourselves': a qualitative process evaluation of READ-Y psychological first aid training for healthcare workers working in routine care.

Introduction: Healthcare workers (HCWs) are routinely exposed to distressing and potentially traumatic events during frontline care, yet receive limited structure training to manage such exposure. Psychological first aid (PFA) training has been widely disseminated among emergency responders and is increasingly being adapted for HCWs; however, its acceptability, implementation, and use in routine care remain underexplored. This study aimed to explore how an adapted PFA training programme was perceived, implemented, and used by HCWs in routine care, and to identify the mechanisms and contextual

A service evaluation of phased- and stepped-care psychological support for health and social care workers during the COVID-19 pandemic.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic has disproportionally affected the mental health of health and social care workers (HSCWs), with many experiencing symptoms of depression, anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder. Psychological interventions have been offered via mental health services and in-house psychology teams, but their effectiveness in this context is not well documented. AIMS: To evaluate a stepped-care psychological support pathway for HSCWs from Homerton Healthcare Foundation Trust in London, which offered psychological first aid, evidence-based psychological therapies and group-

Coping strategy utilization among posttraumatic stress disorder symptom severity and substance use co-occurrence typologies: A latent class analysis.

OBJECTIVE: There is a lack of research on primary prevention of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms and substance use among trauma-exposed populations. To guide the development of more effective prevention efforts, the current study sought to identify underlying coping mechanisms that impact PTSD-substance use co-occurrence. METHOD: A person-centered analytic approach (latent class analysis) examined PTSD-substance use co-occurrence typologies (classes) and identified theoretically adaptive (e.g., active coping) and maladaptive (e.g., denial) coping strategies that differentiated be

Factors Influencing Individuals' Hesitation to Provide First Aid in Emergencies.

First aid is a life-saving skill, yet many bystanders hesitate to intervene during emergencies due to various psychological, social, and consequential barriers. This cross-sectional study investigated the factors influencing first aid hesitancy among residents of Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. A total of 1,124 participants aged 18 and above completed an online questionnaire assessing their demographic profiles, first aid knowledge, experience, and perceived barriers. Results showed that 53% (n= 596) had received first aid training, but only 20% (n= 225) held a formal license. While 71.2% (n= 795) repor

Effects of stigma on the mental health of adolescents orphaned by AIDS.

PURPOSE: By 2010, an estimated 18.4 million children in Sub-Saharan Africa will be orphaned by AIDS. Research in South Africa shows that AIDS orphanhood is independently associated with heightened levels of psychological problems. This study is the first to explore the mediating effects of stigma and other factors operating on a community level, on associations between AIDS orphanhood and mental health. We assessed the associations of four risk factors that can potentially be addressed at a community level (bullying, stigma, community violence, and lack of positive activities) with psychologic

Association among first-aid literacy, training and life meaning: a KAP study of first-year undergraduates at a comprehensive university in China.

BACKGROUND: First-aid education has been widely implemented in universities, with first-aid literacy serving as key evaluation indicators. Meaning in life (MIL) positively influences health awareness and prosocial behavior; however, its relationship with first-aid literacy remains insufficiently explored. This study investigated the association between meaning in life and safety and first-aid literacy among first-year undergraduate students and examined the mediating role of prior first-aid training times. METHODS: A total of 4,723 first-year undergraduate students from a comprehensive univer

Symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder among first aid providers.

BACKGROUND: Every year, large numbers of individuals are present or provide first aid in situations involving out-of-hospital cardiac arrest, injuries, or suicides. Little is known about the impact of providing first aid or witnessing a first aid situation, but research indicates that many first aid providers (FAP) experience persistent psychological difficulties. Here we aimed to assess the level of psychological impact of being a FAP. METHODS: In this retrospective study, FAP attending follow-up were asked to complete the International Trauma Questionnaire (ITQ), which is a self-report diag

[Invisible support, life-saving cooperation].

In certain cases, emergency care begins even before emergency medical services arrive on the scene, as bystanders take immediate action. Dispatchers play a key role in supporting lay responders, yet their responsibility often remains unrecognized. The aim of this summary was to examine the cooperation between dispatchers and lay first aid providers from various perspectives. Advancements in technology are significantly improving prehospital care. The emergence of structured decision-support software, video-assisted resuscitation, and artificial intelligence-based systems can considerably enhan

Care aides' perceptions of caring for residents with a history of psychological trauma in Western Canadian care homes.

OBJECTIVE: To explore care aide perceptions of caring for residents who aides perceived had past psychological trauma. METHODS: Through cognitive interviews, we developed a definition of trauma for four survey questions about caring for residents with psychological trauma. We added these questions to our routine care aide survey in 91 care homes in Western Canada (September 2019 to February 2020). We asked if care aides perceived that they were caring for residents with trauma, how often, types of trauma experienced, and what indication led them to perceive a resident had experienced trauma.
