Adaptive signal theory: an integrative evolutionary, ecological, and intergenerational framework for psychological distress.

Despite substantial increases in pharmacological and psychotherapeutic treatment availability, global rates of psychological distress continue to rise, a pattern existing frameworks, taken individually, cannot fully explain. Current dominant models frequently conceptualize distress primarily as neurochemical dysfunction, emphasizing symptom reduction while leaving broader neurobiological signaling processes insufficiently addressed. For a clinically significant subset of individuals, this contributes to recurring symptom patterns, escalating treatment requirements, and eventual treatment resis

Infertility psychological distress in women undergoing assisted reproductive treatment: A grounded theory study.

BACKGROUND: While there exists an ample body of research in international contexts focused on the characterization and quantification of infertility psychological distress, the level of scholarly scrutiny directed towards this phenomenon within the context of China remains scant. AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To investigate the formation and developmental processes of psychological distress associated with infertility and infertility treatment among women within the Chinese cultural context and to construct a theoretical framework that elucidates this phenomenon. DESIGN: Qualitative approach with gro

Understanding psychological distress among mothers in rural Nepal: a qualitative grounded theory exploration.

BACKGROUND: There is a large burden of psychological distress in low and middle-income countries, and culturally relevant interventions must be developed to address it. This requires an understanding of how distress is experienced. We conducted a qualitative grounded theory study to understand how mothers experience and manage distress in Dhanusha, a low-resource setting in rural Nepal. We also explored how distressed mothers interact with their families and the wider community. METHODS: Participants were identified during a cluster-randomised controlled trial in which mothers were screened f

Psychological traits and their explanation: A 20-year perspective from Reinforcement Sensitivity Theory.

Reinforcement Sensitivity Theory (RST) attributes certain personality traits to sensitivities of neural systems based on a detailed long-lasting neuropsychology of state control. (First book-length edition, 1982, 3rd edition, 2024). However, for trait system sensitivities, within-system details can largely be ignored. Here we provide an overview of the systems for personality researchers. We also extended the underdeveloped personality aspects of the neuropsychology. In the process of producing this extension, we discovered various lacunae in personality theory as a whole (and the role of scie

Value Fulfillment from a Cybernetic Perspective: A New Psychological Theory of Well-Being.

Value Fulfillment Theory (VFT) is a philosophical theory of well-being. Cybernetic Big Five Theory (CB5T) is a psychological theory of personality. Both start with a conception of the person as a goal-seeking (or value-pursuing) organism, and both take goals and the psychological integration of goals to be key to well-being. By joining VFT and CB5T, we produce a cybernetic value fulfillment theory in which we argue that well-being is best conceived as the fulfillment of psychologically integrated values. Well-being is the effective pursuit of a set of nonconflicting values that are emotionally

Unmet psychological needs underlying mobile phone dependence among medical undergraduates: a qualitative study based on the basic psychological needs theory.

BACKGROUND: Mobile phone dependence is recognized as a global public health concern, particularly among medical students. The unmet psychological needs reflected in mobile phone dependence among undergraduate medical students remain unclear. Our study aimed to explore the unmet psychological needs underlying mobile phone dependence among medical undergraduates from the Basic Psychological Needs Theory (BPNT) perspective through interviews. METHODS: Fifteen undergraduate medical students exhibiting mobile phone dependence were recruited through purposive sampling for in-depth, semi-structured

AI-mediated writing and durable learning: a psychological theory of calibration, bypassing and uptake.

Artificial intelligence (AI)-mediated writing provides a critical case for educational psychology because it reveals how learners regulate cognition, effort, confidence, motivation, and beliefs about competence when fluent external support is available. In English as a foreign language (EFL) writing, such support can correct grammar, reformulate sentences, suggest organization, and sustain revision dialogs with learners who may not have immediate access to human feedback. These affordances invite a tempting inference: better AI-assisted drafts indicate better learning. This Hypothesis and Theo

Dual-process theories beyond cognitive psychology: psychodynamic, clinical, and neurobiological perspectives.

Dual-process theories (DPT) have become an influential framework for understanding human cognition by distinguishing between two modes of mental processing, often described through distinctions such as automatic vs. controlled, intuitive vs. analytic, or unconscious vs. conscious. Although initially developed within cognitive psychology, this review considers DPT in relation to psychodynamic, clinical, and neurobiological perspectives to explore their complementary contributions to understanding human mental functioning. From a psychodynamic perspective, particular attention is given to primar

Testing the predictions of the interpersonal-psychological theory of suicide in a sample of female cancer patients.

OBJECTIVES: Individuals suffering from cancer have a heightened risk of suicide; thus, understanding suicide-related thoughts and behaviors is key to identifying vulnerable patients. The interpersonal theory of suicide (IPTS) provides a comprehensive framework for examining suicide risk factors and has been validated across a range of samples. This study aimed to evaluate the applicability of IPTS in a group of female cancer patients. METHODS: This study was registered with the German Clinical Trials Register (DRKS00020477; registered on June 30, 2020). In this study, we tested three major hy

Dual-Brain Psychology: A novel theory and treatment based on cerebral laterality and psychopathology.

Dual-Brain Psychology is a theory and its clinical applications that come out of the author's clinical observations and from the Split-brain Studies. The theory posits, based on decades of rigorous, peer-reviewed experiments and clinical reports, that, in most patients, one brain's cerebral hemisphere (either left or right) when stimulated by simple lateral visual field stimulation, or unilateral transcranial photobiomodulation, reveals a dramatic change in personality such that stimulating one hemisphere evokes, as a trait, a personality that is more childlike and more presently affected by c

Child abuse and suicidality in the context of the Interpersonal Psychological Theory of Suicide: A network analysis.

OBJECTIVES: While there is evidence for an association of child abuse with suicidality in the course of life, the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. The Interpersonal Psychological Theory of Suicide (IPTS) provides a theoretical framework to investigate this relationship. The present study examines how different subtypes of child abuse are related to suicidal ideation and to attempts in the context of the IPTS. METHODS: 146 psychiatric inpatients (M = 37.9 years, 62% female) with an acute suicidal crisis (n = 71) or a recent suicide attempt (n = 74) were examined at baseline (T0) and six (

Social anxiety and suicidal ideation: Test of the utility of the interpersonal-psychological theory of suicide.

Social anxiety is related to greater suicidality, even after controlling for depression and other psychopathology. The Interpersonal-Psychological Theory of Suicide (IPTS; Joiner, 2005) proposes that people are vulnerable to wanting to die by suicide if they experience both perceived burdensomeness (sense that one is a burden to others) and thwarted belongingness (a greater sense of alienation from others). Socially anxious persons may be especially vulnerable to these interpersonal factors. The current study tested whether interpersonal IPTS components independently and additively mediate the

Measuring quality of life in theory and in practice: a dialogue between philosophical and psychological approaches.

Measuring quality of life is of concern to both philosophers and psychologists, yet the two disciplines typically approach the question in very different ways, ways so diverse that it may look as if they are engaged in such disparate activities that no dialogue between them is possible. In this paper we aim to construct the beginnings of a dialogue between the two disciplines which will show how they could serve each other and yet also show how, from the dialogue, difficult and previously unconsidered issues emerge for both sides.

[Preventive psychology - theory and practical application on the example of paraplegic patients (author's transl)].

Starting out from Caplan's thinking on the concept of prevention and on crisis theory, it is contended for the care of persons with paraplegia, as for that of physically disabled people generally, that psychological prevention must set in already during their stay in hospital. A study of 77 paraplegic individuals confirms the urgent need for these efforts, which aim at reducing the occurrence of stressful situations and at promoting the most favourable outcome possible. They presuppose a search for environmental conditions that may generate crisis in individual disability groups, and also on w

Basic Psychological Needs and Mental Health in Primary Care: A Self-Determination Theory Perspective.

Mental health concerns are increasingly encountered in primary care, yet clinical approaches often focus on symptom management rather than underlying psychological processes. Self-Determination Theory (SDT) proposes that psychological well-being depends on the satisfaction of three basic psychological needs-autonomy, competence, and relatedness-while their chronic frustration contributes to psychological distress. Despite extensive evidence linking these needs to mental health outcomes, their relevance in primary care remains underexplored. This single-center cross-sectional study examined ass

Technology-Facilitated Sexual Harassment Against Women and Psychological Dysfunction: A Test of Objectification Theory.

Objectification theory was tested to examine the potential mediating role of self-objectification in the relationship between technology-facilitated sexual harassment (TFSH) and psychological functioning in a sample of women (N = 481). The results indicated that TFSH was associated with eating pathology, alcohol use, and sexual functioning. Furthermore, partial support for the objectification theory was achieved, with self-objectification potentially explaining the relationships between TFSH and eating pathology, and TFSH and alcohol use. This research may shed light on the role of objectifica

Toward a decent learning theory: a structural-psychological framework for understanding students' appraisals of learning.

Research on learning has often focused on ability, motivation, self-regulation, and performance, but these approaches do not fully explain why students within the same educational system may appraise learning in markedly different ways. To address this gap, this article proposes Decent Learning Theory (DLT) to explain adolescents' perceived decent learning from a structural-psychological perspective. DLT draws on educational psychology, developmental psychology, the sociology of education, intersectionality theory, and the Psychology of Working Theory. It proposes that structural educational c

Grounded theory study on the psychological and behavioural processes of medical nurses in response to patient incivility.

BACKGROUND: Patient incivility is a significant source of work-related stress for nurses, particularly in highly interactive departments such as internal medicine. Although such behaviours are low in intensity, they occur frequently, continuously depleting nurses' emotional and psychological resources and impacting their well-being and the safety of nursing care. Existing research predominantly focuses on the impact at an overall level, lacking in-depth understanding of nurses' individual cognition, coping strategies, and internal psychological processes within specific situations. This study

The Interpersonal-Psychological Theory of Suicide to Explain Suicidal Risk in Eating Disorders: A Mini-Review.

Suicide is a major cause of death in Eating Disorders (EDs) and particularly in anorexia nervosa (AN). The aim of the present mini-review was to summarize the literature focusing on the interpersonal-psychological theory of suicide (IPTS) by Thomas E. Joiner, as applied to explain suicidal risk in EDs. PubMed database was used to search articles focused on IPTS in EDs; 10 studies were eventually included. The majority of the included studies reported data from the same sample, even though the hypotheses and analyses for each study were unique. The investigated suicidal outcomes were suicidal i
