Beyond trauma: Schema-driven psychological burden in psoriasis.

Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory skin disease with well-documented psychological comorbidities, yet the mechanisms linking early life experiences to its psychosocial impact remain underexplored. This cross-sectional study examined the associations between childhood trauma, early maladaptive schemas (EMSs), and psychological distress in adults with psoriasis (n = 85), other chronic illnesses (n = 85), and healthy controls (n = 85). Participants completed validated self-report measures assessing childhood maltreatment (Childhood Trauma Questionnaire-Short Form), EMSs (Young Schema Questionnai

Restraint procedures and dementia sufferers with psychological trauma.

Restraint is an extreme response to an emergency situation in which there is imminent harm to self or others. Although some restrained patients become calm, others may become even more behaviorally disorganized. In some of these latter cases, the restrained patients may be victims of violence for whom the restraint procedure acts as a symbolic reminder of the past victimization. Elderly dementia sufferers may also be among these victims of violence. This paper provides a brief review of psychological trauma, research findings on psychological trauma in the elderly, and an approach to modifying

Global variation in the assessment of psychological trauma in pregnancy.

A history of psychologically traumatic experiences can impact health outcomes for pregnant people and their infants. The perception and prevalence of traumatic experiences during pregnancy may differ by geographical region. To better understand trends in how and what kinds of psychological trauma are assessed globally, we conducted a secondary analysis on a larger systematic review examining psychological trauma measurement in pregnancy. Through a systematic literature review conducted following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines, completed betwee

Effects of psychological and biomechanical trauma on brain and behavior.

The current conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan have resulted in a large cohort of military personnel exposed to combat-related psychological trauma as well as biomechanical trauma, including proximity to blast events. Historically, the long-term effects of both types of trauma have been viewed as having different neural substrates, with some controversy over the proper attribution of such symptoms evident after each of the major conflicts of the last century. Recently, great effort has been directed toward distinguishing which neuropsychiatric sequelae are due to which type of trauma. Of intere

Psychologic trauma, posttraumatic stress disorder, and dermatology.

Psychologic trauma refers to events (such as sexual assault, major earthquake, or plane crashes) that overwhelm an individual's capacity to cope. Psychologic trauma can result in chronic and recurring dermatologic symptoms that persist after the trauma subsides. Examples are cutaneous sensory flashbacks (which may be fragments of the sensory component of the traumatic experience), autonomic hyperarousal (with symptoms such as profuse sweating or flare-up of an underlying stress-reactive dermatosis), conversion symptoms (such as numbness, pain, or other medically unexplained cutaneous symptoms)

Psychological trauma and its treatment in the polio epidemics.

In this paper, I explore the kinds of psychological trauma experienced by polio patients in the mid-twentieth century in the United States. I argue that the trauma was the result of the experience of sudden paralysis, the conditions under which patients were treated, and the expectations for rehabilitation derived from the psychosocial context of the period. Psychiatric and psychological counseling in hospitals was only beginning to be offered in this period, and most polio patients received little or no counseling or assistance in dealing with their psychological problems. Contemporary psycho

The effect of childhood trauma on later psychological adjustment.

This study examined whether adult attachment and cognitive distortion mediate the relationship between childhood trauma and psychological adjustment. The participants were 219 students (40 men and 117 women) enrolled in a university degree. Participants completed the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire, which assessed retrospective accounts of childhood trauma; the Relationships Scales Questionnaire, which measured two dimensions of adult attachment (model-of-self and model-of-other); the Cognitive Distortions Scale, which measured internal attributions and perceptions of controllability; and the T

Psychological health and trauma in male and female soldiers.

This study assessed the effect of premilitary and military trauma on the psychological health of more than 1,000 female and male active duty soldiers. Questionnaire data provided information on demographics, history of trauma exposure, and general psychological health as assessed by the Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI). The results indicated that females reported experiencing more sexual traumas and males reported more nonsexual traumas. BSI subscale scores indicated poorer psychological health among all of the subjects compared with BSI normative groups and other Army soldiers. The need for mili

Dissociation and childhood trauma in psychologically disturbed adolescents.

OBJECTIVE: To test the hypothesis that dissociation in adolescence is positively correlated with stress or abuse experienced earlier, the authors assessed dissociation in a heterogeneous group of disturbed adolescents and examined the relationship between the degree of dissociation and the degree of reported childhood stress, abuse, or trauma. METHOD: The subjects were 47 adolescents, 13-17 years old, who were institutionalized for periods of 1-13 weeks in a private mental hospital; 35 were girls and 12 were boys. Participants completed the Dissociative Experiences Scale and a child abuse and

Pierre Janet and the breakdown of adaptation in psychological trauma.

In this reappraisal of the work of Pierre Janet at the centenary of the publication of L'automatisme psychologique, the authors review his investigations into the mental processes that transform traumatic experiences into psychopathology. Janet was the first to systematically study dissociation as the crucial psychological process with which the organism reacts to overwhelming experiences and show that traumatic memories may be expressed as sensory perceptions, affect states, and behavioral reenactments. Janet provided a broad framework that unifies into a larger perspective the various approa

[When a trauma becomes a taboo--is it pathogenetic? Communication in the family about psychological traumas].

Case histories and clinical studies have pointed to the harmful effect on their children when traumatized parents do not communicate their traumatic experiences. The present paper argues that it is not the lack of communication in itself that is harmful. Lack of communication should rather be regarded as a coping mechanism which could indicate intrapersonal and interpersonal problems within the family.

Impact of childhood exposure to psychological trauma on the risk of psychiatric disorders and somatic discomfort: single vs. multiple types of psychological trauma.

We examined whether childhood exposure to multiple types of potentially traumatic events (PTEs) relative to a single type of PTE is associated with a higher prevalence of psychiatric disorders and greater somatic discomfort in Korean adults. The Composite International Diagnostic Interview 2.1 (K-CIDI 2.1) was administered to 6027 subjects aged 18-74 years. Subjects who experienced a traumatic event before the age of 18 years, the childhood trauma exposure group, were compared with controls without childhood exposure to PTEs. In the childhood trauma exposure group, subjects who experienced onl

[Teamwork and leadership in the trauma room. Trauma room management from a psychological perspective].

The treatment of patients in the trauma room places extraordinary demands on the multidisciplinary and multiprofessional team with regard to expert qualifications and teamwork. The present study triangulates data extracted from observation, interviews and questionnaires. In general, team climate and teamwork are good, yet some problems could be identified. Not all team members-especially younger physicians and nurses-feel free to express their doubts and uncertainties. Furthermore, the treatment plan is not always clear for all team members. Absent or unclear leadership is seen as a main probl

[Cerebral trauma - psychological trauma? Study of 47 children with medulloblastoma and their follow-up].

47 Children with medulloblastoma who were treated between 1954 and 1974 were studied. The parents and children were interviewed regularly with their medical attendants to estimate the contribution of the organic disease, the psychological factors and the environment on their intellectual performance and their personalities. In the assessment, allowance was made for their age, clinical history, and social and scholastic background. The analysis helped in the choice of the most appropriate psychological support.
