A Bayesian framework for happiness, health, and psychological well-being.

Classical accounts of well-being have largely been grounded in homeostasis, conceptualizing well-being as the regulation of affective states around defended set points. More recent Bayesian and active inference approaches similarly characterize living systems as predictive regulators that maintain viable states by minimizing expected surprise. Building on these perspectives, this article proposes an integrative Bayesian framework in which well-being is understood not as a fixed scalar quantity, but as a dynamically maintained viability corridor defined by hierarchically organized prior expecta

Well-Being in First Person: A Relational Construction of Psychological Well-Being Among Young People With Intellectual Disabilities.

BACKGROUND: Psychological well-being (PWB) has become a central construct in contemporary psychology; however, young people with intellectual disabilities (ID) remain largely underrepresented in well-being research. Much of the available evidence relies on proxy reports from caregivers or professionals, limiting understanding of how young people with ID themselves conceptualize and experience well-being. This qualitative study explores the meaning of psychological well-being from a first-person perspective among young people with mild intellectual disabilities. METHOD: Thirteen participants (

This paper addresses consequences of exposure to violence and trauma. Traumata are defined as events with an extraordinary threat or catastrophic extent. Beside Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), affected people may develop Complex PTSD, Prolonged Grief Disorder or Adjustment Disorder as direct consequences of exposure with extreme stress. Indirect trauma-related disorders are amongst others Major Depression, Substance Dependency and Personality Disorders. These disorders develop often comorbid to PTSD. The likelihood to develop a PTSD at one point during the life course is 1-4% in Germany.

What drives psychological well-being in early-stage multiple sclerosis?

Background: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a debilitating neurological disease with physical, cognitive, and emotional symptoms that is characterised by recurrent, unpredictable symptom exacerbations. Despite treatment advancements, patients with relapsing-remitting MS remain at high risk for psychopathology. While prior studies have investigated the influence of physical symptoms on psychological well-being, psychological factors are often overlooked. Methods: This study investigated the association between baseline reports of perceived functioning and one year of weekly reports of psychological

Support Network Typology and Psychological Well-Being Among Young Adults.

The psychological well-being of young adults is a growing concern in the United States. Social networks, comprising relationships that provide various types of support, are crucial predictors of their psychological well-being. A network typology offers a pattern-centered approach to classify relational compositions into subgroups with similar patterns. Using longitudinal data from the UC Berkeley Social Networks Study (UCNets), this study identified a network typology for young adults' support networks and examined its relationship with psychological well-being across four functional support n

Conscious dance: Perceived benefits and psychological well-being of participants.

BACKGROUND: Meta-analyses suggest that dance has potential to decrease psychological distress, increase trait mindfulness, and enhance quality of life. Conscious dance can be defined as unchoreographed, intentionally nonevaluative mindful movement commonly practiced in a group setting for purposes of authentic self-expression, self-discovery, interpersonal connectedness, and personal healing or growth. OBJECTIVE: To assess perceived effects of conscious dance practice (e.g., Ecstatic Dance, 5Rhythms) and examine associations between frequency/duration of practice and psychological well-being

Psychological Symptoms and Well-Being After Treatment for Primary Aldosteronism.

Primary aldosteronism (PA) is an increasingly identified cause of secondary hypertension. PA can be caused by an aldosterone-producing adenoma or by bilateral adrenal hyperplasia, generally treated by adrenalectomy or mineralocorticoid receptor antagonists, respectively. Recent studies suggest that PA is associated with more psychological symptoms and lower levels of well-being. The purpose of this study was to investigate the associations between subtype of PA and psychological symptoms and well-being after specific treatment. We analyzed the outcomes of the Mental Health Continuum-Short Form

Perceived Social Status and Psychological Well-Being Among Dental Students.

OBJECTIVE: Perceived social status (PSS), a subjective measure of social position, has been associated with multiple health outcomes. Elevated levels of stress, depression, and anxiety are all prevalent among dental students, but the role of PSS among this population remains unknown. This study investigates relationships between PSS and mental health among dental students. METHODS: In fall 2023, an online survey was distributed to all actively enrolled pre-doctoral dental students at the University of Iowa College of Dentistry and Dental Clinics (UICOD) (N = 326). Questions included demograph

Psychological, social and welfare interventions for psychological health and well-being of torture survivors.

BACKGROUND: Torture is widespread, with potentially broad and long-lasting impact across physical, psychological, social and other areas of life. Its complex and diverse effects interact with ethnicity, gender, and refugee experience. Health and welfare agencies offer varied rehabilitation services, from conventional mental health treatment to eclectic or needs-based interventions. This review is needed because relatively little outcome research has been done in this field, and no previous systematic review has been conducted. Resources are scarce, and the challenges of providing services can

Induced abortion has no psychological effect on early parental self-efficacy and psychological well-being: The Steps to the Healthy Development and Well-being of Children study.

INTRODUCTION: An association between a history of induced abortion and psychological well-being post-abortion has been demonstrated in recently published studies, which is contrary to the findings of existing known high-quality studies. MATERIAL AND METHODS: An evaluation was conducted to determine whether a history of abortion affected the psychological well-being and parental self-efficacy of first-time mothers and their partners; this assessment was performed when the child was aged 18 months. Questionnaires were administered to 492 first-time mothers, 37 of whom had a history of abortion,
