Chronic use of benzodiazepines and psychomotor and cognitive test performance.

The performance of 43 long-term users (average = 5 years) of benzodiazepine (BZ) medications was examined on a battery of behavioral tasks, cognitive tests, and subjective mood rating scales. The performance of the chronic BZ users did not differ significantly from age- and sex-matched anxious subjects, except that critical flicker fusion (CFF) thresholds were lower and subjective ratings of tranquilization were higher in the BZ users. Twenty-two subjects were reexamined in order to determine the acute effects of BZ medications in long-term users. The acute administration of BZ medications sig

[The effect of a new analgesic, flupirtine, on psychomotor performance in humans].

Psychomotor efficiency was tested on 12 male patients after peroral administration of the analgesically acting monosubstance 2-amino-3-ethoxycarbonyl-amino-6-p-fluorobenzyl aminopyridine (flupirtine, Katadolon) (3 X 100 mg on the previous day and 100 mg before the test) and compared with the peroral administration of diazepam, chlorphenoxamine and a placebo using a combined multiple problem, which tests the fine motor coordination in the peripheral and central field of vision at high vigilance. Compared with the placebo, flupirtine lengthened the reaction time with only slight significance by

Trait-anger enhances effects of caffeine on psychomotor vigilance performance.

This study examined the combined effects of caffeine and the personality attribute of trait-anger on the speed of psychomotor vigilance performance during sleep deprivation. 23 young adult soldiers (19 male) were administered the State-Trait Anger Expression Inventory-2 when well-rested. Participants were then sleep deprived for three consecutive nights (77 hours total) during which they completed repeated psychomotor vigilance testing. Half of the participants received four doses of oral caffeine (200 mg every 2 hr.; 800 mg total) each night, while the other half were administered a placebo.

Longitudinally preserved psychomotor performance in long-term asymptomatic HIV-infected individuals.

BACKGROUND: Recent case reports have suggested that some asymptomatic HIV-infected individuals can develop CNS disturbances despite intact immunologic functioning and long-term suppression of plasma HIV concentrations to undetectable levels. This possibility has not yet been systematically studied longitudinally. METHODS: Using longitudinal data from the Multicenter AIDS Cohort Study, we investigated neuropsychological performance in long-term asymptomatic HIV-infected men who have sex with men. Performance over a 5-year period on the Symbol Digit Modalities test and the Trail Making Tests we

Median nerve electrophysiologic parameters and psychomotor performance in carpal tunnel syndrome.

Psychomotor performance (PMP) involving a repeated, rapid pinch and release task was correlated with median nerve electrophysiologic parameters for control subjects (16 hands) and subjects with carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) (14 hands). The psychomotor task was used because of its functional resemblance to many work related activities. A strain gauge dynamometer was repeatedly pinched to a predetermined force level using the index finger and thumb and then released as rapidly as possible, while measuring the actual isometric force exerted. Discrete visual and auditory feedback was provided. Medi

A new metric for quantifying performance impairment on the psychomotor vigilance test.

We have developed a new psychomotor vigilance test (PVT) metric for quantifying the effects of sleep loss on performance impairment. The new metric quantifies performance impairment by estimating the probability density of response times (RTs) in a PVT session, and then considering deviations of the density relative to that of a baseline-session density. Results from a controlled laboratory study involving 12 healthy adults subjected to 85 h of extended wakefulness, followed by 12 h of recovery sleep, revealed that the group performance variability based on the new metric remained relatively u

Characterization of daytime sleepiness and psychomotor performance following H1 receptor antagonists.

BACKGROUND: While first generation H1-receptor antagonists are widely used, there are relatively few data describing their comparative effects on subjective daytime sleepiness and psychomotor performance. OBJECTIVE: To compare the effects of first generation H1 receptor antagonists on subjective daytime sleepiness and psychomotor performance. METHODS: We conducted two single-dose, cross-over studies. In the first, we validated our methodology in 18 healthy subjects by examining the response to diphenhydramine (50 mg), terfenadine (60 mg), and placebo. In the second trial, we evaluated the re

Histamine H1-receptor blockade in humans affects psychomotor performance but not memory.

Results from recent animal studies suggest an important role for histamine in memory functioning. Histaminergic drugs might prove beneficial for people suffering from memory impairment. To determine if histamine is involved in memory functioning this study evaluates the effects of histaminergic dysfunction on memory performance by administrating a H1-antagonist to humans. The study was conducted according to a 4-way, double-blind, crossover design in 20 healthy female volunteers, aged 18-45 years. On each test day subjects completed three test sessions: before and around 2 and 4 h after admini

Cognition and vigilance: differential effects of diazepam and buspirone on memory and psychomotor performance.

Effects of a single dose of the anxiolytic buspirone (15 mg) on memory and psychomotor performance were studied in healthy volunteers and compared to those of the classic benzodiazepine anxiolytic diazepam (15 mg). The study was performed in a double-blind, placebo-controlled way. Three groups of 12 subjects were exposed to an extended test battery before and after intake of drug or placebo. Next to this, an evaluation session took place 1 week later. Immediately after intake, diazepam exerted major effects on memory, impaired psychomotor performance and decreased alertness. In particular, lon

Differential contributions of theobromine and caffeine on mood, psychomotor performance and blood pressure.

The combination of theobromine and caffeine, methylxanthines found in chocolate, has previously been shown to improve mood and cognition. However, it is unknown whether these molecules act synergistically. This study tested the hypothesis that a combination of caffeine and theobromine has synergistic effects on cognition, mood and blood pressure in 24 healthy female subjects. The effects of theobromine (700 mg), caffeine (120 mg) or the combination of both, or placebo were tested on mood (the Bond-Lader visual analog scale), psychomotor performance (the Digit Symbol Substitution Test (DSST)) a

Next day effects of a normal night's drinking on memory and psychomotor performance.

AIM: To investigate in social drinkers the effects of a 'normal' evening of drinking alcohol on cognitive performance. METHODS: Aiming for ecological validity, the study required participants to consume their usual quantity of any type of alcoholic beverage in their chosen company (hangover situation). However, the timing of drinking was restricted to the period between 22:00 and 02:00 hours on the night before testing. Testing included memory and psychomotor performance tests; testing was also performed after an evening of abstinence (no hangover situation), following a counterbalanced desig

Caffeine and diazepam: separate and combined effects on mood, memory, and psychomotor performance.

The effects of caffeine and diazepam on several mood, cognitive, learning, memory, and psychomotor tasks were investigated in a double-blind study of 108 young healthy adults who were randomly assigned to nine treatments; oral administration of caffeine (0, 3 and 6 mg/kg), diazepam (0, 0.15, and 0.30 mg/kg) and their combinations. Subjects completed a battery of tasks once before and twice after administration of the drugs. Caffeine alone showed no effects on cognitive, learning, and memory performance, but impaired fine motor coordination and increased anxiety and tenseness. Diazepam alone pr

Psychomotor vigilance task performance during total sleep deprivation in young and postmenopausal women.

The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of age on women's performance in the psychomotor vigilance task (PVT) during total sleep deprivation (SD). A total of 46 healthy women volunteered. They belonged to two age groups: young (n=34; age range 19-30 years; 12 without, and 22 with oral contraceptives (OC); early phase of the menstrual cycle) and older (n=12; age range 60-68; postmenopausal; without hormone therapy). During a 40-h total SD, the subjects performed the PVT and the Stanford Sleepiness Scale (SSS) at 2-h intervals. At baseline, the reaction speed of the young wome
