The usefulness of psychophysiology in the maintenance of cognitive life.

In connection with the 14th World Congress of Psychophysiology--the Olympics of the Brain--IOP2008, held in my native Sankt-Petersburg, I am happy to state that the conceptualization of Psychophysiology as forming the objective scientific bases upon which the investigation and understanding of human cognitive and emotional processes became possible, was born in this country in 1886, under the wise leadership and personal initiatives of my Grandfather, the great Vladimir Michailovich Bechterev, whose contribution in the Experimental and Clinical Psychophysiology and Human Brain Sciences have be

Psychophysiology of stress in dermatology. The psychobiologic pattern of psychosomatics.

Stress is an abnormal or extreme adjustment in the physiology of an animal to cope with adverse effects of its environment and management. The adverse effect is designated the stressor. In this article, the authors try to focus on the main types of host factors that can influence stress (genetics, perception) and on the numerous types of stressors (environmental, behavioral, psychological). Moreover, the authors outline the relevance of psychosomatic medicine, proposing the examination of psyche and soma as a unit "in sickness and in health." They focus their attention on the new aspects of bi

Psychophysiological correlates of 'bipolarity'.

Four hundred patients with major affective disorders were divided into six groups based on lifetime composite evaluations of the intensity, frequency, and duration of their high energy-positive mood states. This division was termed degree of 'bipolarity'. Within the non-bipolar I patients (groups 1-4) the rating of 'bipolarity' was found to be significantly positively associated with enuresis, classical migraine, Raynaud's disease, learning disorders, fingernail biting, and episodic phenomena. The possible significance of this non-bipolar I 'bipolarity' continuum construct is discussed. A sign

Reconciling RDoC and DSM approaches in clinical psychophysiology and neuroscience.

The Research Domain Criteria (RDoC) initiative endeavors to foster a science of psychopathology based around dimensions of brain-behavior relationships as opposed to subjectively based diagnostic categories. A rapidly accumulating array of transdiagnostic commonalities, across multiple objective and subjective measures, underscores the clear potential of this initiative. At the same time, a road map for guiding future RDoC research efforts is needed that draws upon the wealth of extant disorder-specific findings. In this issue, Hamm and colleagues provide an example of conceptualizing within-d

Psychophysiology of the reaction time experiment: a factor analytic approach.

A principal component factor analysis with varimax rotation was applied to behavioral and physiological data from a group of 25 subjects comprising normals and depressives, in whom event-related slow brain potentials were recorded during performance of a fixed foreperiod, reaction time task. Five of the seven factors thus evinced were labelled 'activation', 'inhibition', 'resilience', 'depressivity-neuroticism' and 'extraversion', the remaining two factors being related to arousal in an unspecified manner. Although no clear-cut partitioning of variance into trait, state and task-related compon

Preliminary effects of prefrontal tDCS on dopamine-mediated behavior and psychophysiology.

The ability to manipulate dopamine in vivo through non-invasive, reversible mechanisms has the potential to impact clinical, translational, and basic research. Recent PET studies have demonstrated increased dopamine release in the striatum after bifrontal transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS). We sought to extend this work by examining whether bifrontal tDCS could demonstrate an effect on behavioral and physiological correlates of subcortical dopamine activity. We conducted a preliminary between-subjects study (n = 30) with active and sham tDCS and used spontaneous eye blink rate (EBR

The psychophysiology of generalized anxiety disorder: 2. Effects of applied relaxation.

Muscle relaxation therapy assumes that generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) patients lack the ability to relax but can learn this in therapy. We tested this by randomizing 49 GAD patients to 12 weeks of Applied Relaxation (AR) or waiting. Before, during, and after treatment participants underwent relaxation tests. Before treatment, GAD patients were more worried than healthy controls (n=21) and had higher heart rates and lower end-tidal pCO2, but not higher muscle tension (A. Conrad, L. Isaac, & W.T. Roth, 2008). AR resulted in greater symptomatic improvement than waiting. However, 28% of the AR

Respiratory psychophysiology of panic disorder: three respiratory challenges in 98 subjects.

OBJECTIVE: Respiratory abnormalities may play a central role in the pathophysiology of panic disorder. The current study was undertaken to examine the respiratory response in the largest series of subjects to date during three respiratory challenges that used improved methodology. METHOD: Fifty-nine patients with DSM-III-R panic disorder and 39 normal volunteers were challenged with 5% and 7% CO2 inhalation and room air hyperventilation separated by room air breathing with continuous spirometry. RESULTS: Patients with panic disorder were more sensitive to the anxiogenic effects of CO2 than w

[Chronic insomnia: not always psychophysiological].

OBJECTIVE: To determine the sensitivity, specificity and the positive and negative predictive value of taking a detailed sleep history for making the diagnosis of psychophysiological insomnia. DESIGN: Retrospective case file study. METHOD: We examined 767 patients referred to the Amsterdam Centre for Sleep and Wake Disorders, and who underwent polysomnography for the first time between 1 January and 31 December 2010. We compared the probable diagnosis made following history-taking with the final diagnosis made after polysomnography. In this we differentiated between organic and non-organic i

Psychophysiologic aftereffects of prenatal irradiation.

Prenatally irradiated children (n = 544), who were born between 26 April 1986 and 26 February 1987, in regions of the Ukraine which were radioactively contaminated as a result of the Chernobyl disaster, their mothers and teachers have been examined with psychometric tests. The control group of relevant children (n = 759), their mothers and teachers, were living at the radioecological 'clear' regions (Kharkov and Kharkov Region). Further, we randomly selected 50 prenatally irradiated children whose mothers were evacuated from the Chernobyl exclusion zone and 50 age-and-gender-matched non-expose

Premature ejaculation: a psychophysiological review.

This review examines the most common male sexual dysfunction, premature ejaculation (PE). The prevalence, classification, neurophysiology, neuropharmacology, and psychological studies that offer evidence useful for understanding and clinically evaluating PE are reviewed. It is proposed that there are two basic kinds of PE: biogenic and psychogenic. Studies reporting pharmacological aspects of ejaculation offer some suggestions regarding the mechanisms of ejaculation as well as possible pharmacologic aid for some premature ejaculators. The traditional assumption among sex therapists that PE is

The psychophysiological nature of premature ejaculation.

The hypothesis that premature ejaculators (PEs) are less able than non-premature ejaculators (NPEs) to evaluate accurately their level of physiologically determined sexual arousal was tested. Twenty-six men (13 PEs and 13 NPEs) viewed a variety of videotaped vignettes, some of which were excerpts from sexually explicit films. Concurrent subjective (self-report) and objective (plethysmograph) ratings of sexual arousal were taken. Data revealed that both the PEs and NPEs were equally accurate in assessing their level of physiological sexual arousal. These results and those from a sexual history

Psychophysiologic disorders in children and adolescents.

Psychosomatic disorders in children and and adolescents is a topic that covers a wide variety of illnesses and one which is difficult if not impossible to define accurately. In general, chronic emotional states, often nonspecific, serve as strong contributors to the development of a physical illness. The particular illness is often dictated by varying degrees of biological predisposition in one physiological system-i.e., such a predisposition in the respiratory system may lead to asthma or in the gastrointestinal system to ulcerative colitis. In some cases the biological factor is large and th
