Relative deprivation in black and white youth: an empirical investigation.

A model of relative deprivation is proposed drawing on the writings of Gurr (1970) and Runciman (1966) and is discussed in relation to existing studies. Those aspects of the model concerning the intensity of affective reaction to relative deprivation are subjected to empirical test using samples of employed and unemployed black and white youth. The prediction that the degree of relative deprivation is negatively associated with attitudes to the perceived cause of deprivation receives only limited support. Various indices of relative deprivation are compared and it is concluded that present rel

Impact of experiencing multiple vulnerabilities on fetal growth and complications in women with hyperglycemia in pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: In women with hyperglycemia in pregnancy living in France, psychosocial deprivation is associated with both earlier and greater exposure to the condition, as well as poorer maternofetal prognosis. We explored the impact of this and two other socioeconomic vulnerability indicators-food insecurity and poor language proficiency-on adherence to prenatal care and maternal and fetal outcomes. METHODS: In a socially deprived suburb of Paris, we selected women who delivered between 01/01/2012 and 31/12/2018 and received care (nurse, dietician, diabetologist evaluation, advice, regular fol…

Dimensions of early experience and neural development: deprivation and threat.

Over the past decade, a growing area of research has focused on adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and their impacts on neural and developmental outcomes. Work in the field to-date has generally conceptualized ACEs in terms of exposure to stress while overlooking the underlying dimensions of environmental experience that may distinctly impact neural development. Here, we propose a novel framework that differentiates between deprivation (absence of expected cognitive and social input) and threat (presence of a threat to one's physical integrity). We draw support for the neural basis of this d

Modeling fighting deprivation effect in mouse repeated aggression paradigm.

Male mice with a long positive fighting history develop behavioral psychopathology, which includes abnormal aggression, hostility, hyperactivity, stereotypic reactions and other behavioral phenotypes. We also found that the "winners" (mice that had each won 20 daily encounters in succession) develop an enhanced level of aggression after a no-fight period, compared to their respective levels of aggressive behavior before the fighting deprivation. Natural hedonic stimuli (such as access to females or sweet water), supplied to the winners during this no-fight period, appear to play a minor role i

Psychosocial short stature: a syndrome with many variables.

PSS is at least two syndromes of significant frequency, which often go unrecognized. It occurs in all socioeconomic groups. It is variable in its presentation and often masquerades in its subtle forms as other pathological causes of short stature such as GHD, CDGP, malabsorption and failure to thrive. It is an entity about which we understand little in respect to biochemical pathophysiology, and one which offers a challenge to both clinicians and basic scientists.

[Typology of early childhood autism].

On the basis of the study of 96 children with the syndrome of early childhood autism the author proposes a model of the pathopsychological structure of this syndrome with primary disturbances directly related to the disease and secondary manifestations of mental abnormalities and pathological hypercompensation. On the basis of this structure the author has identified four groups of children differing in the severity of primary disturbances, gravity of mental disorders, and forms of hypercompensation. The proposed typology may be useful for gaining better understanding into the regularities of

Is sub-nutrition necessary for a poor outcome following early institutional deprivation?

Institutional deprivation is multifaceted and includes adverse psychosocial and nutrition-related components. In this study we partitioned t … negative effects of early deprivation, including stunted brain growth, occur without sub-nutrition: psychosocial deprivation plays a major role in neurodevelopmental effects of deprivation. Further studies of functional and structural neuroanatomy following institutional deprivation are required to delineate the role of brain development in its effects.

A review of recent literature on materialist and psychosocial models for racial and ethnic disparities in birth outcomes in the US, 2000-2014.

OBJECTIVE: Material and psychosocial factors exacerbate racial disparities in health outcomes. This review sought to ascertain recent knowledge of the effects of materialist and psychosocial factors on differences in low birthweight (LBW) and preterm delivery (PTD) outcomes between Black and White mothers. DESIGN: Search and review was conducted for studies that examined: (a) neighborhood-level deprivation as an indicator of material conditions, and (b) racial discrimination or occupational stressors as indicators of psychosocial stress. The outcomes of interest were LBW and PTD. RESULTS: Ma

Heightened sensitivity to the caregiving environment during adolescence: implications for recovery following early-life adversity.

BACKGROUND: Adolescence has been proposed to be a period of heightened sensitivity to environmental influence. If true, adolescence may pres … caregiving environment, at least for some domains of functioning. For children who experience early psychosocial deprivation, this developmental period may be a window of opportunity for recovery of some functions. Albeit correlational, these findings suggest that it may be possible to reverse or remediate some of the lasting effects of early-life adversity with intervent …

Psychosocial Approaches for Sexual Health and Intimate Relationships Among Patients With Serious Mental Illness.

INTRODUCTION: The sexual health and behavior and the intimate relationships of patients diagnosed with a serious mental illness (SMI) have been described as ongoing and often ignored concerns in mental health treatment. Evidence-based psychosocial interventions have emerged as effective complimentary approaches to address symptoms of SMI in conjunction with psychopharmacology, yet rarely do they address sexual concerns in a targeted manner. AIM: This systematic review explores the scope and efficacy of psychosocial interventions designed to address sexual health and behavior and intimate rela

Medically unexplained visual symptoms in children and adolescents: an indicator of abuse or adversity?

PURPOSE: To highlight abuse and adversity in childhood as an association of medically unexplained symptoms. METHODS: Case series. RESULTS: Two young adults and one child (all female) are described with medically unexplained impaired vision and diplopia, which on further investigation were found to be associated with abuse or adversity, and in one case was followed by the development of further unexplained symptoms. CONCLUSIONS: Ophthalmologists dealing with children and young people need to ensure that child abuse and adversity are considered as potential underlying associations when dealin

Low vision: how to assess and treat its emotional impact.

For many older adults facing visual loss, the frustration and distress that makes life's activities difficult or impossible may lead to clinically significant emotional problems. Patients may feel a loss of independence and control, poor self-esteem, and strained social relationships. Clinically, the most common emotional problems related to vision loss are adjustment disorder and major depressive episode. For patients with adjustment disorder, counseling or psychotherapy is recommended for both the patient and family members. Patients with major depression must be evaluated and referred for m

Non-organic failure to thrive.

Failure To Thrive is a phenomenon often encountered in the ambulatory pediatric setting. This disorder is usually classified into two main categories: organic or non-organic/psycho-social depending upon the causative factor(s). The first section of this paper discusses evaluation and assessment of the child suspected of having failure to thrive. The second section deals with specific management techniques which can be implemented by the nurse practitioner in caring for the child with non-organic failure to thrive.

Boys with developmental coordination disorder: loneliness and team sports participation.

OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the mediational role of team sports and other leisure occupations for boys ages 10 to 13 years in the relationship between physical coordination ability and perceptions of loneliness. METHOD: Sixty boys with developmental coordination disorder (DCD) and 113 comparison boys without DCD completed a self-report measure of loneliness. Parents recorded information on leisure involvement over 7 days. RESULTS: Boys with DCD recorded significantly higher loneliness and lower participation rates in all group physical activities, whether structured (e.g., team sports

The problem of somatization in family practice.

Patients with somatization disorder, in the full-blown or subsyndromal form, are high users of health care and often receive expensive, unnecessary tests and treatments. Their multiple somatic complaints do not have a biomedical basis but, instead, reflect underlying emotional conflicts that the patient is unable to face. Treatment of these patients is difficult, with no approach showing a good cure rate. However, if the underlying psychosocial etiology is understood and modest goals are set, much can be done to limit the problem and reduce symptoms. Management includes setting clear limits on

Psychosocial short stature with psychosis: a case report.

OBJECTIVE: Our objective was to report and describe a case of psychosocial short stature in an adolescent girl with psychotic features. Psychosocial short stature is a rare condition in which emotional stress or deprivation in childhood profoundly reduces growth, leading to persistent short stature. This disorder is variably known as psychosocial dwarfism, hyperphagic short stature or maternal deprivation dwarfism. In the literature, psychosocial short stature has not been associated previously with psychosis. CONCLUSIONS: We formulate that our patient's short stature, developmental regressio
