Competing Models of Personality Disorder: Relations With Psychosocial Functioning.

The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th Edition (DSM-5; American Psychiatric Association, 2013), includes 10 categorical personality disorders (PD) in Section II (Section II PD) and a dimensional alternative model of PD (AMPD) in Section III. We compared the two models in explaining concurrent psychosocial functioning levels in psychiatric outpatients and community residents screened as at risk for PD pathology (N = 600). The AMPD's fully dimensional form showed stronger associations with psychosocial difficulties and explained more of their variance compared with the ca

Symptom domains and psychosocial functioning in borderline personality disorder.

BACKGROUND: Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is often characterized by severe functional impairment, even after a decrease in symptoms. A comprehensive understanding of psychosocial functioning in BPD is necessary to tailor treatment offer, which should address relevant aspects of daily life. The aims of the present study are to (1) conduct a cross-sectional comparison of functioning of a group with BPD and a non-BPD clinical comparison group at service entry, and to (2) assess the relationship between intensity of BPD symptom domains and psychosocial functioning. METHODS: The sample con

Understanding gender differences in psychosocial functioning and treatment retention.

Although much research has compared males and females who seek substance abuse treatment, little attention has been given to factors that moderate or mediate relations between gender and dependent measures such as psychological functioning and retention. Consequently, this study examined whether family support, prior homelessness, embracement of the 12-step ideology, and attributions for addiction modified or accounted for these relations. Bivariate correlations showed that females reported less self-esteem and family support, as well as more self-blame and parental blame, than did their male

Psychosocial functioning in schizophrenia: are some symptoms or demographic characteristics predictors across the functioning domains?

This study aimed to examine symptoms/demographic characteristics as predictors for psychosocial functioning among individuals with schizophrenia. The Personal and Social Performance (PSP) scale was used to assess psychosocial functioning. Other measures of interest included were the Clinical Global Impression, Severity scale, and the Marder's five-factor model of the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale. This study included 199 participants with non-acute stage schizophrenia. Spearman correlation coefficients and stepwise multiple linear regression analyses were applied to determine the correl

Influences of maternal reflective functioning on adolescents' psychosocial adjustment: The mediating role of adolescent's reflective functioning.

This study examines the relationship between maternal reflective functioning and adolescents' reflective functioning and psychosocial adjustment. In Study 1, The Parental Reflective Functioning Questionnaire for Adolescents (PRFQ-A) and Reflective Functioning Questionnaire for Youth (RFQ-Y), multidimensional scales used to assess reflective functioning in parents and adolescents, respectively, were validated in groups of Korean adolescents and mothers. In the results, the three factors were extracted (non-mentalizing, certainty, interest/curiosity) that were similar to those from the original

Maternal psychosocial functioning, obstetric health history, and newborn telomere length.

There is growing interest in elucidating the determinants of newborn telomere length, given its potential as a biomarker of lifetime disease risk affected by prenatal exposures. There is limited evidence that increased maternal stress during pregnancy predicts shorter newborn telomere length. However, the few studies published to date have been conducted primarily with small samples utilizing inconsistent definitions of maternal stress. Moreover, the potential influence of fetal sex as a moderator of maternal stress effects on newborn telomere length has been largely ignored despite compelling

Neurocognitive, adaptive, and psychosocial functioning in individuals with Robinow syndrome.

It has been estimated that 10-15% of people with Robinow syndrome (RS) show delayed development, but no studies have formally assessed developmental domains. The objective of this study is to provide the first description of cognitive, adaptive, and psychological functioning in RS. Thirteen participants (10 males) aged 4-51 years were seen for neuropsychological screening. Eight had autosomal-dominant RS (DVL1, n = 5; WNT5A, n = 3), four had autosomal-recessive RS (NXN, n = 2; ROR2, n = 2), and one had a mutation on an RS candidate gene (GPC4). Participants completed measures of intellectual,

Psychosocial functioning of adolescents with and without paediatric bipolar disorder.

BACKGROUND: While there has been a growing interest in the presentation of Bipolar Disorder (BD) in children and adolescents, few studies have investigated the psychosocial functioning of these individuals and its relationship to trauma and suicidal ideation. METHODS: 63 adolescents aged 13-17 participated: 39 controls and 24 with Bipolar Disorder (BD). Group allocation and histories of trauma and suicidal ideation were obtained using the K-SADS-PL and WASH-U-KSADS. Severity of gambling problems and psychosocial functioning in older adults.

This study examined the relationship between severity of gambling problems and psychosocial functioning in older adults. Twenty-one current pathological gamblers and 10 current problem gamblers over 60 years of age completed the Addiction Severity Index (ASI), Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS), Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI), UCLA Loneliness Scale (UCLA-LS), and Social Provisions Scale (SPS). Compared with problem gamblers, pathological gamblers reported increased severity of gambling and family/social problems on the ASI; scored higher on the GDS, BSI, and UCLA-LS; and scored lower on the SPS.

Psychosocial functioning in women who have undergone bilateral prophylactic mastectomy.

The purpose of this study was to determine the current psychosocial functioning of women who had previously had a bilateral prophylactic mastectomy. Women in the province of Ontario who had undergone prophylactic mastectomy between 1991 and 2000 were asked to complete questionnaires that assessed psychological distress, sexual activity, overall satisfaction with decision to have a prophylactic mastectomy, and body image. Ninety-seven percent of the women were satisfied with their decision to have a prophylactic mastectomy, but young women (<50 years) were less likely to report satisfaction tha

Psychosocial functioning and psychiatric comorbidity among substance-abusing Icelandic adolescents.

Our objectives were to compare behaviour problem scores (BPS) for Icelandic adolescents admitted for detoxification treatment for alcohol and narcotic abuse as compared with the general population, in accordance with the Youth Self Report (YSR), and to describe psychosocial functioning and psychiatric comorbidity for the treated adolescents. The case series consisted of 103 adolescents, ages 12-18 years, who completed the YSR at the end of a 10-day stay at the National Hospital of Addiction Medicine. The total BPS tallied from the YSR items was compared with scores for the general population.

Neurobehavioral and psychosocial functioning of children with opsoclonus-myoclonus syndrome.

Childhood opsoclonus-myoclonus syndrome (OMS) is a movement disorder which typically strikes children in the early preschool years, seriously affecting intellectual, social-emotional and general adaptive development. This series of 13 cases with well-documented neurological histories, aged 1.7 to 16.3 years, provides an initial systematic evaluation of these children's neuropsychological, psychosocial and adaptive status. As expected, children with OMS had significantly reduced intelligence and severe speech and motor output problems; however, most of them also demonstrated a range of preserve
