A randomized controlled trial of brief psychoanalytic psychotherapy in patients with functional dyspepsia.

Functional dyspepsia (FD) is a common cause of upper gastrointestinal symptoms and discomfort. The present study aimed to assess the effectiveness of brief core conflictual relationship theme (CCRT) psychoanalytic psychotherapy on changing gastrointestinal symptoms, alexithymia, and defense mechanisms in patients with FD. In a randomized controlled trial study, 49 patients with FD were randomly assigned to medical treatment with brief psychodynamic therapy (24 subjects) or medical treatment alone (25 subjects). Gastrointestinal symptoms, defense mechanisms, and alexithymia were assessed before

Change Mechanisms in Brief Interpersonal Psychotherapy for Women With Perinatal Depression: Qualitative Study.

OBJECTIVE: Brief interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT-B) has been shown to be effective in treating perinatal depression and in preventing depressive relapse among socioeconomically disadvantaged women. Yet, it is unclear how IPT-B alleviates depression. Previous research has suggested four possible change mechanisms derived from IPT's interpersonal model: decreasing interpersonal stress, facilitating emotional processing, improving interpersonal skills, and enhancing social support. This study explored how women who received IPT-B or enhanced maternity support services (MSS-Plus) evaluated their

Integrating personality functioning in brief psychotherapy for substance use disorders: a case study.

A large treatment gap exists for substance use disorders (SUDs) in India. Among other factors, personality vulnerabilities are widely implicated in the initiation and maintenance of SUDs leading to poor outcomes. Available brief interventions do not adequately address this. Longer term therapies are resource intensive and therefore difficult to incorporate in tertiary care settings due to poor treatment provider-patient ratio. Further, trait-based and categorical models have limited application in brief psychotherapies. Core pathology seen across personality disorders such as the impairments i

Behavioural, psychological, and temperamental predictors of risk suicide trend after brief psychodynamic psychotherapy.

BACKGROUND: Evidence has shown that psychotherapy is effective for depression, whereas the outcome for suicide risk is unclear. AIM: It was to investigate whether possible pre-treatment predictors of suicide risk (SR) decrease after a brief psychodynamic psychotherapy treatment and at follow-up. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Forty-one patients were assessed at: baseline (T0) for clinical history, clinical family history, physical diseases, type of suffered abuse; after the treatment (T1); and, at six-month follow-up (T2) for mood ratings, temperamental features, and SR levels. RESULTS: The levels o

Engagement in and Benefits of a Short-Term, Brief Psychotherapy Intervention for PTSD During Pregnancy.

Trauma-related symptoms and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are common during pregnancy and have adverse effects on pregnancy and birth outcomes, post-partum maternal mental health, and child development. The arousal symptoms associated with PTSD, including heightened or dysregulated physiology, may contribute to these adverse outcomes. Low-income minoritized women may be at highest risk given more lifetime exposure to trauma and limited access to mental health care. While evidence-based psychotherapies for PTSD exist, none are targeted to non-treatment seeking individuals nor specifical

Impact of Cluster C personality disorders on outcomes of contrasting brief psychotherapies for depression.

Twenty-seven of 114 depressed clients, stratified for severity of depression, obtained a Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (3rd ed.; DSM-III; American Psychiatric Association, 1980) diagnosis of Cluster C personality disorder--that is, avoidant, obsessive-compulsive or dependent personality disorder (PD clients)--whereas the remaining 87 did not (non-personality-disorder [NPD] clients). All clients completed either 8 or 16 sessions of cognitive-behavioral (CB) or psychodynamic-interpersonal (PI) psychotherapy. On most measures, PD clients began with more severe symptomatolo

A pragmatic randomized controlled pilot trial of brief meaning-centered psychotherapy in home care.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with advanced cancer receiving home health care experience elevated psychosocial and existential distress, yet few interventions address these concerns. This pilot randomized controlled trial examined the feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary efficacy of brief, nurse-delivered, meaning-centered psychotherapy in patients with advanced cancer compared with treatment as usual (TAU). METHODS: Distressed patients (aged 18 years and older) were randomized 1:1 to receive either a three-session Meaning-Centered Psychotherapy for Hospitals, Hospice, and Home (MCP-H; n = 3

Brief day hospital mentalization based group psychotherapy for schizophrenia spectrum disorders: A feasibility study.

BACKGROUND: Mentalization-based therapy (MBT), a manualized psychodynamically and developmentally oriented psychotherapy, has been proven effective in controlled studies in non-psychotic patients with severe mental disorders. Although MBT is currently being used to treat schizophrenia spectrum disorders (SSD), to date no prospective studies have evaluated outcomes and treatment-related adverse effects. Brief mentalization-based group psychotherapy (B-MBGT) is a 12-week program based on the explicit mentalizing techniques of MBT. The study was conducted at a day hospital (DH) and the main objec

Transference interpretations and long-term change after dynamic psychotherapy of brief to moderate length.

In our study of 43 neurotic outpatients treated with brief dynamic psychotherapy, a significant inverse relationship was found between frequency of transference interpretations and long-term outcome for the subsample of 21 patients with a history of high quality of interpersonal relationships. At four-year follow-up, only one of four such patients achieved successful dynamic change when the interpretive focus had been on the transference relationship, whereas three of four patients achieved successful dynamic change when the interpretive focus had been on extratransference relationships. Interpersonal psychotherapy for the prevention of excess weight gain and eating disorders: A brief case study.

This article presents a brief case study of "Jane Doe," a 13-year-old, non-Hispanic White girl 2 participating in a clinical research trial of interpersonal psychotherapy-weight gain (IPT-WG). Girls at-risk for adult obesity and binge eating disorder (BED) were randomly assigned to take part in 12 weeks of preventative group treatment. Jane's IPT-WG group included five other early adolescent girls (mostly aged 12-13) at risk for adult obesity and BED. The case of Jane illustrates a successful example of IPT-WG for the prevention of excessive weight gain and for the prevention of BED. (PsycINFO

What is the effect on comorbid personality disorder of brief panic-focused psychotherapy in patients with panic disorder?

BACKGROUND: No studies of psychotherapies for panic disorder (PD) have examined effects on comorbid personality disorders (PersD), yet half such patients have a PersD. METHODS: In a randomized trial for PD with and without agoraphobia comparing Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Panic-Focused Psychodynamic Psychotherapy (PFPP), PersD was assessed pre-to-post treatment with the Structured Clinical Interview for the Diagnosis of Axis-II Disorders (SCID-II). For patients completing therapy (n = 118, 54 with PersD), covariance between panic and SCID-II criteria improvements was analyzed. SCID

Debriefing with brief group psychotherapy in a homogenous group of non-injured victims of a terrorist attack: a prospective study.

This study describes a follow-up of 15 non-injured women, all from the same socio-economic background, who were exposed to a terrorist attack in Israel. All of the women participated in group debriefing with brief group psychotherapy, involving six meetings during the first 2 months following the event. Two days after the attack, and 2 months and 6 months after the event, the women were administered a post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) diagnostic scale, the Impact of Event Scale (IES) and the SCL-90. At 6 months, four subjects (27%) were diagnosed with full PTSD. The IES showed significantl

In-session emotional experiencing in brief psychotherapy conducted by trainee psychologists: process, alliance, and the role of therapist persuasiveness.

Despite the recognition of emotional experiencing as a key change factor in psychotherapy, gaps remain regarding how clinical training influences this dimension, particularly in brief interventions conducted by trainees, and preliminary process data on this phenomenon in Portuguese clinical training contexts are scarce. This study examined emotional experiencing in brief psychotherapy conducted by trainee psychologists undergoing structured experiential training with deliberate practice, analyzing whether patients show a progressive increase in experiential depth across sessions, whether highe

Comparative Efficacy of Brief Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Generalized Anxiety Disorder: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

Background: Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is the most established psychological treatment for generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), yet many patients do not achieve full remission. Brief psychoanalytic psychotherapy represents a theoretically distinct alternative, but direct controlled comparisons remain limited. This study examined the short-term efficacy of brief psychoanalytic psychotherapy and CBT relative to a waitlist control in adults with GAD. Methods: In a three-arm randomized controlled trial, 60 adults with DSM-5-diagnosed GAD were allocated to brief psychoanalytic psychotherapy

MDMA-Based Psychotherapy in Treatment-Resistant Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD): A Brief Narrative Overview of Current Evidence.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a debilitating mental health disorder that causes significant dysfunction in individuals. Currently, there are many approved pharmacotherapy and psychotherapy treatment options for PTSD, but unfortunately, half of the patients do not respond to traditional therapies. In this article, we review clinical trials and research on 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA)-assisted psychotherapy in PTSD patients, its pharmacokinetics, and current treatment guidelines for PTSD. Our findings are based on the results of the efficacy of MDMA-assisted psychotherapy

CBT therapists' attitudes toward virtual reality use in psychotherapy: a brief report from the Czech Republic and Slovakia.

Virtual reality (VR) is an increasingly accessible technology with strong potential to support cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), particularly through virtual reality exposure therapy (VRET). However, real-world uptake remains limited, and there is a lack of knowledge about implementation needs in specific regions. This convergent mixed-methods study explored the attitudes, perceived benefits and barriers, and desired functional and training requirements of Czech and Slovak CBT psychotherapists regarding the use of VR. Thirty-three therapists completed an anonymous online questionnaire combin
