Mpox in the United States: Current implications for public health nursing.

In 2022, mpox, an orthopoxvirus first isolated in 1958 in cynomolgus monkeys, became a global public health threat. While the virus can be communicated through skin-to-skin contact from any infected person to non-infected person, most cases in the United States have been in gay and bisexual men. Consequently, early public health and community-based efforts concentrated on reducing infections in this population. This article explores current mpox case count epidemiologic data and trends. In addition, vaccination indications, contraindications, adverse events, and national administration data ar

Moral distress in public health practice: Case studies from nursing education.

Moral distress in critical care nursing has been well studied; however, there is a gap in the literature related to moral distress among nurses and nursing students practicing in the community. This paper describes moral distress experienced during participation in the Interprofessional Care Access Network, a community-based nurse-led education and practice program providing longitudinal care coordination for underserved individuals and families in rural communities and urban neighborhoods. Two case studies represent client situations resulting in moral distress for nursing faculty and student

Nursing Unit Communication During a US Public Health Emergency: Natural Experiment.

BACKGROUND: In the second half of 2014, the first case of Ebola virus disease (EVD) was diagnosed in the United States. During this time period, we were collecting data for the Measuring Network Stability and Fit (NetFIT) longitudinal study, which used social network analysis (SNA) to study relationships between nursing staff communication patterns and patient outcomes. One of the data collection sites was a few blocks away from where the initial EVD diagnosis was made. The EVD public health emergency during the NetFIT data collection time period resulted in the occurrence of a natural experim

Public Health Nursing as Connective Infrastructure: A Health Policy Perspective on Family Homelessness and Health Equity.

Family homelessness is shaped by social and structural determinants of health, including poverty, housing insecurity, fragmented services, and unequal access to support. Families with infants and young children are particularly vulnerable to the health and developmental effects of housing instability. Public Health Nurses (PHNs) are uniquely positioned at the interface of health services, family life, and community systems. Through universal reach, relational continuity, developmental surveillance, safeguarding, advocacy, and interagency coordination, PHNs help families remain connected to car

Public health nurse advocacy as essential for addressing the health impacts of climate change.

BACKGROUND: Climate change is transforming the environmental, social and structural determinants of health, intensifying inequities across populations and geographies. Although nurses are at the forefront of addressing climate-related health impacts, nurses' influence on climate policy remains significantly underleveraged. Strengthening the leadership and advocacy of nurses is essential for meeting the escalating population health challenges posed by climate change. ANALYSIS: There is limited organized advocacy for climate action by public health nurses. At the 7th Global Network of Public He

Public health nurses' experiences during the H1N1/09 response.

OBJECTIVE: H1N1/09 was the first pandemic flu ever responded to with mass vaccinations. Public health nurses (PHNs) were pivotal in implementing the H1N1/09 vaccination clinics. This study's purpose was to explore PHNs' experiences in the H1N1/09 mass vaccination clinics. DESIGN AND SAMPLE: In a qualitative interpretive description, 23 PHNs (16 immunizers, seven supervisors) who worked in a large Canadian municipal public health agency, participated in semistructu

The aim of this study was to estimate the occurrence of health problems reported by nursing staff in a hospital in Bahia, Brazil. This is a cross-sectional study, involving 309 nursing professionals. The most frequent health complaints were related to musculoskeletal symptoms such as leg pain 66.4% (192) and back pain 61.8% (178); and to mental health wi

Public Health Nurses in Israel: A Case Study on a Quality Improvement Project of Nurse's Work Life.

They were feeling tired and frustrated and burn-out was rising. The district's nursing management took the decision, together with Tel Aviv University's nursing research unit, to conduct a quality improvement project based on issues that arose from meetings with focus groups on the nurses' difficulties. This paper is a case study of a quality improvement project

It is critical to identify nurses at risk of burnout early and implement interventions as early as possible. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey of the hospitals in Xiangyang City was conducted in January, 2023 using stratified cluster sampling. Anonymized data were collected from 1584 working nurses. The Impact of Events Scale-Revised (IES-R) and the Chinese version of the Maslach Burnout Inventory-General Survey (MBI-GS) were used to evaluate the post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
