Public health surveillance of Yersinia species in England, 2017-2024.

Yersinia pseudotuberculosis and Yersinia enterocolitica are globally found zoonotic gastrointestinal bacteria known to cause human infections, transmitted by consumption of contaminated food or environmental contact. Y. enterocolitica is the dominant species in causing yersiniosis, and is under ascertained in England. Diagnostic laboratories across England undertake detection of Yersinia in stool and other sterile sites using UK Standards for Microbiology Investigations. In 2022, there was an exceedance of invasive and gastrointestinal Yersinia notifications across England. Recommendations wer

Canadian blood suppliers: An expanding role in public health surveillance?

BACKGROUND: Anlotinib was approved as a third line therapy for advanced non-small cell lung cancer in China. However, the impact of concurrent administration of various clinical drugs on the drug-drug interaction (DDI) potential of anlotinib remains undetermined. As such, this study aims to evaluate the DDI of anlotinib as a victim by establishing a physiologically based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) model. METHODS: The PBPK model of anlotinib as a victim drug was constructed and validated in the Simcyp® incorporating parameters derived from in vitro studies, pre-clinical investigations, and clinica

Public health surveillance systems involving Indigenous Peoples: a scoping review protocol to inform circumpolar mental health and wellness surveillance.

INTRODUCTION: Mental health and well-being are urgent priorities across circumpolar regions, where suicide and psychological distress contribute substantially to premature mortality and disability. Indigenous communities in Arctic and sub-Arctic settings continue to face profound inequities linked to colonisation and intergenerational trauma, while also advancing wellness frameworks grounded in cultural continuity, language, land and self-determination. Progress in mental health promotion and suicide prevention depends on timely, consistent and culturally relevant population-level information.

Combating a resurgence of poliomyelitis through public health surveillance and vaccination.

Poliomyelitis, or polio, is a highly infectious disease and can result in permanent flaccid paralysis of the limbs. Singapore was certified polio-free by the World Health Organization (WHO) on 29 October 2000, together with 36 other countries in the Western Pacific Region. The last imported case of polio in Singapore was in 2006. Fortunately, polio is vaccine-preventable-the world saw the global eradication of wild poliovirus types 2 and 3 achieved in 2015 and 2019, respectively. However, in late 2022, a resurgence of paralytic polio cases from vaccine-derived poliovirus (VDPV) was detected in

Molecular Diagnosis as an Alternative for Public Health Surveillance of Leptospirosis in Colombia.

Leptospirosis represents a public health problem in Colombia. However, the underreporting of the disease is an unfortunate reality, with a clear trend towards a decrease in cases since 2019, when the guidelines for its confirmatory diagnosis changed with the requirement of two paired samples. The purpose of this review is to highlight the importance of leptospirosis. While the access to rapid diagnosis is available at practically all levels of care for dengue and malaria, leptospirosis-a doubly neglected disease-deserves recognition as a serious public health problem in Colombia. In this manne

Cholera public health surveillance in the Republic of Cameroon-opportunities and challenges.

INTRODUCTION: In Cameroon, cholera has periodically resurfaced since it was first reported in 1971. In 2003, Cameroon adapted the Integrated Disease Surveillance and Response (IDSR) strategy to strengthen surveillance in the country. This study was an in-depth description and assessment of the structure, core and support functions, and attributes of the current cholera surveillance system in Cameroon. It also discussed its strengths and challenges with hope that lessons learned could improve the system in Cameroon and in other countries in Africa implementing the IDSR strategy. METHODS: Semi-

Protecting public health in the age of bioterrorism surveillance: is the price right?

Millions of dollars have been spent improving the bioterrorism surveillance capabilities of the public health system. Yet relatively little attention has been paid to the benefits that such expenditures yield. To assess the impact of an aerosol release of Bacillus anthracis, this article collects the available evidence on the potential benefits of environmental detection relative to the costs of a bioterrorist attack like the one in 2001, which occurred in the absence of any such detection. The cost-benefit model shows that biological surveillance that reduces time to treatment to 48 hours yie

Towards public health surveillance of intensive care services in NSW, Australia.

OBJECTIVES: Outbreaks of known and novel pathogens causing very severe illness increase the risk to public health in a globalised community and alarm the public. Intensive care units (ICUs) may be an underused setting for public health surveillance. This study investigates the electronic Record for Intensive Care (eRIC), an electronic clinical information and management system being developed for New South Wales ICUs, and its surveillance opportunity offerings. METHODS: The surveillance benefits being introduced by the eRIC were evaluated through consultation with stakeholders and the eRIC pr

Public Health Surveillance and Reporting for Human Toxoplasmosis - Six States, 2021.

Toxoplasmosis is caused by infection with the zoonotic parasite Toxoplasma gondii. Although disease tends to be mild (e.g., self-limiting influenza-like symptoms) or asymptomatic in immunocompetent persons, toxoplasmosis is more severe in immunocompromised persons, who can develop potentially fatal encephalopathy (1). In addition, primary infections acquired during pregnancy might result in a range of adverse outcomes, including fetal ocular infection, cranial and neurologic deformities, stillbirth, and miscarriage (1,2). An estimated 11% of the U.S. population aged ≥6 years are seropositive f

Isoniazid-related hepatitis: a U.S. Public Health Service cooperative surveillance study.

After an outbreak of hepatitis in Washington, D.C. in 1970 among a group of persons taking isoniazid to prevent tuberculosis, an isoniazid surveillance study was conducted among 13,838 persons in 21 participating health departments. Age appeared to be the predominant factor influencing the risk of developing isoniazid-related hepatitis, i.e., increasing age was associated with an increasing risk. Drinking alcohol, especially on a daily basis, also seemed to enhance the risk of hepatitis among persons concurrently taking isoniazid. In general, case rates among males and females of the same race

The impact of the initial public health response to COVID-19 on swine health surveillance in Ontario.

COVID-19 restrictions and the pandemic have affected animal health and food production through the disease's effects on human activities. COVID-19 impact on swine health surveillance can be assessed by investigating submissions and test positivity for pathogens before and after COVID-19 restrictions. PRRSV, Influenza A virus, Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae and PCV-2 are considered important and economically challenging respiratory diseases for the swine populations. By reviewing test results from swine samples submitted for diagnostic testing to a regional diagnostic laboratory, and by assessing tot

Communicating Community-Based Public Health Surveillance: Lessons from Profiling Public Risk Perceptions of COVID-19 Wastewater Monitoring.

Wastewater monitoring is a well-established form of community-based public health surveillance technology that gained renewed attention during the COVID-19 pandemic as an early warning system for SARS-CoV-2 infection trends. For monitoring data to be effectively translated into public health action, however, communication strategies that address public risk perceptions and foster cooperation are essential. This study focuses on wastewater monitoring in the context of COVID-19 and provides an evidential basis for developing targeted public health messages by segmenting the population into risk
