Agent-based modeling is a computational approach in which agents with a specified set of characteristics interact with each other and with their environment according to predefined rules. We review key areas in public health where agent-based modeling has been adopted, including both communicable and noncommunicable disease, health behaviors, and social epidemiology. We also describe the main strengths and limitations of this approach for questions with public health relevance. Finally, we describe both methodologic and substantive future directions that we believe will enhance the value of ag

Legionella pneumophila is different from traditional drinking water contaminants because it presents a latent public health risk for public and private drinking water systems and for the building water systems they supply. This paper reviews information on the likelihood of occurrence of L. pneumophila in public water systems to lay a foundation for public water systems, as a stakeholder in public health risk management, to better manage L. pneumophila. Important to this approach is a literature review to identify conditions that could potentially promote L. pneumophila being present in drinki

Equitable access to vaccines remains a cornerstone of global health security, yet persistent gaps in regional manufacturing capacity continue to undermine timely and fair distribution. The COVID-19 pandemic exposed the risks of highly concentrated production systems and underscored the need for locally anchored manufacturing models capable of responding rapidly to public health emergencies. The Pasteur Network (PN)-a global consortium of 32 public health and research institutes across Africa, Asia, Europe, and the Americas-offers an operational example of decentralized vaccine manufacturing em

Surveying governmental public health practitioners is a critical means of collecting data about public health organizations, their staff, and their partners. A greater focus on evidence-based practices, practice-based systems research, and evaluation has resulted in practitioners consistently receiving requests to participate in myriad surveys. This can result in a substantial survey burden for practitioners and declining response rates for researchers. This is potentially damaging to practitioners and researchers as well as the field of public health more broadly. We have examined recent deve

CONTEXT: The Massachusetts (MA) local public health system is highly decentralized. All 351 municipalities autonomously manage local public health infrastructure and budget, resulting in service delivery disparities. The MA Department of Public Health (MDPH) recognizes that achieving equitable access to public health services requires systems change, and successful systems change demands active participation and input from partners at all levels.
OBJECTIVES: To collaboratively establish the first Performance Standards (PS) with and for MA local public health to reduce inequities in public hea

OBJECTIVE: Public trust in health systems is pivotal for their effective and efficient functioning. In particular, public trust is essential for personal data use, as demonstrated in debates in many countries, for example, about whether data from COVID-19 contact tracing apps should be pooled or remain on individuals' smartphones. Low levels of public trust pose a risk not only to health system legitimacy but can also harm population health.
METHODS: Synthesising our previous qualitative and theoretical research in the English National Health Service which enabled us to conceptualise the natu

This paper extends the growing research on the impact of gender equity on public health outcomes using the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic as its research setting. Specifically, it introduces a conceptual model incorporating the impact of gender equity and human development on women's representation in legislature and public health expenditure, and their combined impact with human environment (population density, aging population and urban population) on important public health outcomes in the Covid-19 context, including the total number of tests, diagnosed, active and critical cases, and deaths. BACKGROUND: Unhealthy commodity industries (UCIs) engage in political practices to influence public health policy, which poses barriers to protecting and promoting public health. Such influence exhibits characteristics of a complex system. Systems thinking would therefore appear to be a useful lens through which to study this phenomenon, potentially deepening our understanding of how UCI influence are interconnected with one another through their underlying political, economic and social structures. As such this study developed a qualitative systems map to depict the complex pathways through w

Emergency medical services (EMS) clinicians operate in environments characterized by repeated trauma exposure, operational unpredictability, shift work, moral distress, and cumulative occupational stress. A substantial body of evidence demonstrates elevated rates of post-traumatic stress symptoms, depression, anxiety, substance use, sleep disturbance, burnout, and suicide among EMS clinicians and other public safety professionals compared to the general public. The implications extend beyond individual well-being, affecting workforce sustainability, clinical performance, and high quality patie

Three dimensions must be considered to analyze the consequences of exposure to ionozing radiation on public health: assessment of exposure, measure of the public health risk, and monitoring the perception of risk by the population. We reviewed these three dimension for several situations of exposure to ionizing radiation: exposure related to the Chernobyl accident, occupational exposure, military-related exposure and medical exposure. For each situation, we discuss the pertinence of available data an monitoring systems used in France, and propose when necessary new systems. An extension of the

The School-to-Prison Pipeline (STPPL) is primarily positioned in the discourse relating to education and criminal justice yet its public health implications remain underexplored. This commentary draws the connections between STPPL and social determinants of health on Macro, Mezzo, and Micro levels. The STPPL disrupts access to mental health care, nutritional programs, and safety systems embedded within schools. Exclusionary practices such as suspensions and expulsions disconnect students from critical services that promote psychological stability and physical well-being Obsuth et al. (2024). N

Use of psychedelic substances is increasing across unregulated, state-regulated, research, ceremonial/religious, and medical settings in the United States. Concurrently, a growing body of clinical research signals the potential for therapeutic applications for specific psychedelics in the treatment of depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, substance use disorders, and other health conditions. This evolving landscape presents both promise and complexity. From a public health perspective, a structured public health preparedness approach is needed to prioritize safety, workforce readiness, a
