The DREAMS (Determined, Resilient, Empowered, AIDS-Free, Mentored, and Safe) Partnership, a public-private partnership launched by the United States President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), represents the largest investment in comprehensive HIV prevention for adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) ever made in a single global initiative. This paper describes the evolution of programming over time using the triangulation of multiple data sources to develop and refine an impactful program, as well as to improve efficacy and resource investment. Methods of analysis used to evolve thi

The Department of Homeland Security Center for Faith-based & Neighborhood Partnerships (DHS Center) is one of 13 federal centres whose mandate is to engage faith-based and community groups with governments in the delivery of human services. Working alongside local jurisdictions, over the past five years, the DHS Center developed the Building Resilience with Diverse Communities (BRDC) engagement process to improve relationships with faith-based and community organisations and to 'reach unreached' populations in emergency preparedness, response, recovery and mitigation. BRDC works to improve com

In an age of political turmoil and mistrust of governments, having an outlet for creative problem solving that involves all aspects of communities during disasters is critical. Additionally, there is a need for outlets that save taxpayer money for particular projects, such as road construction or infrastructure protection. Public-private partnerships are one way to accomplish these goals. Utilised correctly, a public-private partnership is a win-win situation for all participants. This paper will make the case for the continued support from all sectors for public-private partnerships. A descri

BACKGROUND: Primary health care (PHC) systems across many low- and middle-income countries increasingly rely on mixed provider environments involving public, private, and mission-based actors. Public-private partnerships (PPPs) are often promoted as a way of improving coordination and expanding access to care. However, many PHC partnerships continue to be governed through highly centralized and compliance-oriented arrangements that may limit flexibility, trust, and long-term collaboration. Botswana provides a useful case for examining how PPPs are governed within a health system experiencing f

The COVID-19 pandemic has not only revealed pre-existing vulnerabilities in global health systems and imposed heavy costs on countries worldwide, but also exacerbated existing disparities. These institutional and financing limitations were part of the development strategy, which did not adequately accommodate the health risks accompanying the outbreak of the virus. This disruption has ongoing implications for access to healthcare and treatment, particularly in economically disadvantaged and marginalised communities. This study documents the spatial spillover and threshold effects of health dev

OBJECTIVE: With the increasing societal awareness of the prevalence and impact of acute pain, there is a need to develop an acute pain classification system that both reflects contemporary mechanistic insights and helps guide future research and treatment. Existing classifications of acute pain conditions are limiting, with a predominant focus on the sensory experience (eg, pain intensity) and pharmacologic consumption. Consequently, there is a need to more broadly characterize and classify the multidimensional experience of acute pain.

In 2005, the governments of Bangladesh, India and Nepal, in partnership with the WHO, started the Kala-azar Elimination Programme (KEP) to reduce the incidence of visceral leishmaniasis to below 1 new case in 10 000 population. The target was achieved by Bangladesh in 2017 and validated in 2023. The KEP has demonstrated that, through a concerted approach and public-private partnership, it is possible to eliminate visceral leishmaniasis from the world's highest endemic region, Southeast Asia. The experience learnt can be used elsewhere for visceral leishmaniasis as well as for other diseases ta

This chapter discusses the collaboration between a national college access program, the National College Advising Corps (NCAC), and its research and evaluation team at Stanford University. NCAC is currently active in almost four hundred high schools and through the placement of a recent college graduate to serve as a college adviser provides necessary information and support for students who may find it difficult to navigate the complex college admission process. The advisers also conduct outreach to underclassmen in an effort to improve the school-wide college-going culture. Analyses include

INTRODUCTION: The conect4children (c4c) consortium was setup to facilitate the development of new drugs and therapies for paediatric populations and address key challenges associated with paediatric clinical trials. Two of the major adopting principles for c4c were academia-industry partnership and data harmonisation and interoperability through common eCRF definitions. To understand the challenges arising out of these principles, the c4c team at Newcastle University conducted semi-structured interviews with four c4c industry partners.
METHODS: Each partner was asked 10 questions about the da

New models of drug discovery have been developed to overcome the lack of modern and effective drugs for neglected diseases such as human African trypanosomiasis (HAT; sleeping sickness), leishmaniasis, and Chagas disease, which have no financial viability for the pharmaceutical industry. With the purpose of combining the skills and research capacity in academia, pharmaceutical industry, and contract researchers, public-private partnerships or product development partnerships aim to create focused research consortia that address all aspects of drug discovery and development. These consortia not

Trusted for their legitimacy and track-record, faith-based organisations play a substantial role in the provision of sexual and reproductive health care as part of social services with emphasis on the disadvantaged. Religious imperatives may cause conflict through lack of alignment with government policies regarding selected aspects of rights-based programming: limited range of services, gender norms leading to exclusions and accountability. Nevertheless, their services are crucial to complement those of government in the global South. The long-standing lack of resources of faith-based organis

Alzheimer's disease (AD) research has entered a new era where public-private partnerships are reigniting the pursuit of disease-modifying therapies targeting mechanisms beyond amyloid and tau. This perspective outlines how Monument Biosciences was founded to advance novel therapies by translating National Institutes of Health (NIH) -supported discoveries from the TaRget Enablement to Accelerate Therapy Development for AD (TREAT-AD) and the Model Organism Development and Evaluation for Late-onset AD (MODEL-AD) consortia into a venture-backed pipeline focused on neuroinflammation. There is a long-standing interest in developing biomarkers for neuropsychiatric disorders that might assist in drug development or clinical management. To date, however, progress has been limited in part because of the limited nature of the studies and the absence of the types of large-scale networks that would be required for clinical validation. The first public-private partnership (PPP) for biomarker validation-the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI)-was formed in 2004 to focus on the development of amyloid deposition in the brain as a potential biomarker of Alzheimer's disea

In 2016, 116 people died each day from opioid-related drug overdoses and in 2017, the Department of Health and Human Services declared the opioid crisis a public health emergency. During the preceding years, the continuing education (CE) accreditors in the health professions identified a need for a strategic, coordinated effort that would involve an interprofessional coalition of multiple stakeholders to respond to this emerging public health challenge. Schistosomiasis is a parasitic disease caused by blood flukes. The disease is caused by an inflammatory reaction to parasite eggs retained in the liver, bladder and reproductive organs. According to 2017 World Health Organization (WHO) estimates 220 million people are potentially infected, from which probably 10% are children under 6 years of age. The regular treatment approach of a single, oral dose of 40 mg/kg body weight with praziquantel however, is difficult for children under the age of 6, leaving them without a treatment option. In order to address this important gap in treatment target

BACKGROUND: Public and private health sectors both play a crucial role in the health systems of low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). The tuberculosis (TB) control strategy in India encourages the public sector to actively partner with private practitioners (PPs) to improve the quality of front line service delivery. However, ensuring effective and sustainable involvement of PPs constitutes a major challenge. This paper reports the findings from an empirical study focusing on the perspectives and experiences of PPs towards their involvement in TB control programme in India.
